Gnoll on d1(and level 1) is extremely lethal. You cannot 1v1 it.

Literally the first enemy in the game being a gnoll can easily kill many combos. Would be better if that enchanted flail was venom though, just to really hammer home how much crawl wants you to die.

Surprisingly I can handle the trip to about Lair. That's when it all starts to fall apart.

There's a game going on with an OpWr^Chei but they're exploring Hell and doing a full 15 rune run. The perfect way to grind it in for us lovely Octopode players.

Actually doing pretty well here! Early hep altar, buckler of protection and an amulet of reflection +6 pushed me through the early game. Got snake rune, snake wasn't that scary even though no rPois spawned. Team mates haven't been as lucky, there are piles of octopode corpses between D1-D6.

Octopodes really want that ~5 AC in the early game.

Edit: I can't overstate how good an early hep altar is for a bad start. I can't think of another god that makes such a dramatic difference right off the bat. The ancestor will both let you beat things you couldn't before, and allows escapes by distracting enemies. For no cost at all.

2) Lajatangs are pretty cool.

Fun[?] things I can remember from this game:
Only 1, non-magic hat spawning.
Getting evolution through blind-quaffing potions, evolution proceeding to last the entire game.
Evolution giving my minotaur bigger horns, pushing off the single non-magic hat.
Blind teleporting in Vault:5 to a dirty ambush! Exhausting nearly all of my !hw and praying I could regen some hp.
Evolution eventually giving me rf+++
Evolution giving me robust
An enemy giving me frail
Evolution giving me robust
One digit hp in tomb after a particularly brutal slow+torment chain. Had to double blink away from the greater mummy that followed me up the stairs.
Despite going full warrior, having 29 int and being able to cast Dmissiles, probably should have gotten more spells though.
Only 1 portal spawning, which was an unremarkable ice level.

Sonja is dangerous but super weak to just about any kind of dirty trick you can pull. It's not worth it going toe-to-toe with her.

Well that feels nice. Just wish I didn't splat to a D:1 gnoll before this.

Felt like doing something easier to get back into Crawl. Game threw good gear at me so it wasn't terribly difficult. I was gonna use short blades more this run but when the game gives you a double sword branded with holy wrath its hard NOT to use it. Got to play with beckoning and I'm shocked at how good it is. No roll whatsoever? Works on magic immune enemies? You just pull poo poo over to you and butcher them. Range sucks at low power but it gives me a reason to invest heavily in translocations even on melee characters.

Also Gozag reasons;

Need to come up with a good character to go with Hep and Uska though. I was going to follow Uska this run but didn't realize none of its abilities heal.

Maxwells is only -Cast -Tele so berserk should be fine.

On the subject of -Cast -Tele, Okie gave me home brand Maxwells for trolls and it didn't bite me in the rear end.

Got a weirdly fun two game streak! :toot:

I had basically max one MR pip for the whole game, which meant getting mesmerized, paralyzed, confused, marked, banished, the whole shebang. I ended going to Elf after picking up all my runes for tourney branch points, which got me a total of 9 banishments, which was pretty funny because I found an MR cloak in there. It didn't end up being super relevant since I had 10k gold to bribe Zot and the Dungeon on the ascent, and I even got a friendly Pan lord to leave with me (I saw an executioner on the ascent turn neutral and try to attack the Pan lord. It got swatted immediately) :getin:

No, it was always -Tele, even in Linley's Dungeon Crawl. The big difference back then was that it was called Edison's Patent Armour instead.
