So what are decent break points for Fighting and Dodge? Weapon types until speed cap is easy enough, same with shields until you remove the penalty and armor is much the same, but Fighting and Dodge don't seem to have any obvious break points. My only win so far involved a MiFi finding a scroll of acquisition on D-2 that gave me a super busted demon whip that I rode to victory and I'm pretty sure sub-optimal skilling is involved in that(As well as the urge to horribly mutate all my characters, but that seems to be a common affliction).

riposte only actually triggers once per hydra attack series, not once per head. ditto for other monsters with multiple attacks, e.g. trolls, and likewise ditto for minotaur headbutt retaliation (which is where the code comes from in the first place)

I think what he's referring to is that the amount of attacks will almost always get you a riposte every turn, making it quite reliable.

FoFi with quarterstaff is probably the most busted early game that doesn't involve anything you find laying around.

My HOMo got a Jiyya altar on D2. I never found any armor better than the +0 ring mail i picked up on D1. By D6 I had maxed my piety, but found no source for muts beyond gifts. Then a hornet paralyzes me and I get murdered by 4 polearm wights.

HE always seemed to me to be the melee with buffs race. The combination of good combat apts and good charms mean they get to buffing much quicker.

Mutations are one of my favorite things in DCSS. That extended punishes me for having good mutations that I would like to keep just encourages me to not play extended. It is the only cumulative system that the game will permanently and harshly gently caress with. Drain is temporary. Rot is temporary. To get rid of something like teleportitis, most characters will need a Cure Mutation potion, and that only works if the character has a minimal amount of mutations to start with, discouraging interacting with the system in the first place. I would like to play around in extended but malmutate alone ensures I won't.

Yeah. Getting your panties in a twist because the dev posting here is as mature as we are about changes to Crawl isn't really an interesting discussion point. No matter the delivery, I still know more about where things are going and why, even if I might disagree with both the where and the why.

Reckless and Poor Vision are just interface screws that don't actually affect good play if you are willing to introduce more tedium. I'm not sure if you are allowed to manipulate level gen with a mutation either. You might be able to rework it into it occasionally spawning ghost around you, but that sounds more like a curse than a physical mutation.

Make malmutates curses.

Tengu are specialists, High Elves were very much generalists. There are some superficial similarities, but those are absurdly broad(casts spells. hits stuff. Not deep elf levels of frail).

Get shafted from D2 to D5 on my DrFE, fully expecting to die. Pick up a staff and a ring and find stairs up. Decide to put them on. Ring of Wizardry and Staff of Fire. Hit 7, Red Draconian. Best shaft ever.

If luring is not a problem, why is the change intended to remove it as a tactical option? Murderholes will still be a thing. Murderholes in general are far more powerful and probably not intended behavior, but this change does nothing to combat it. The change also makes tough early game situations much more lethal for the weakest early game combos.

Actually, screw it. I always go melee characters, maybe I'll give spellcasting a spin instead.

What's the best direct route for big magically-induced explosive destruction? High Elf Fire Elementalist of Vehumet?

Now I can't decide between going necromancy/summoning or firey death. Literally nuking my enemies in a holocaust of fire (as traditionally defined, ahem) sounds very appealing.

Deep Elf whatever of Vehument or Sif is the usual powercombo for blowing stuff up. Early game can be rough depending on your starting spellbook, but once you reach midgame, most things die quick. A whatever of Chei is usually better, but it's a completely different playstyle and can teach you bad habits.

While Curse and ID are losing relevance, the food system is far more vestigial in my eyes. Mostly it adds tedium. Spellhunger is weird, because spells already cost mana and for the most part, spell hunger tends to be trivial. Once you reach the point at which you can't just butcher your way to satiety, you generally have high enough casting skills that spell hunger is no longer a thin.
