The one thing I like about Kodi over Plex is how quickly I can bounce through videos on Kodi. On Kodi if I press right, it skips a bit forward. If I press up, it skips even more. I can fly through old rear end SNL episodes I have with ease, trying to find my favorite sketches. On Plex my only option ever is to fast forward or rewind and it annoys the poo poo out of me.

plex owns for streaming outside the house and access to friends libraries, internally its way clunkier than a raspi with kodi pulling poo poo over smb

wish there was a way to sync watched status that didnt involve clouds

oh well

how is it clunkier than a raspi with some computer janitor poo poo set up

i literally just installed it on my desktop once and now it just works. i can watch poo poo from any device anywhere trivially

I personally find Kodi quite a bit faster. With everything; navigating, loading the files, etc. Also the aforementioned thing where I can bounce around any video file with ease in Kodi but I'm stuck to slow seeking bullshit on Plex.

I typically use Plex though.

I've never had any issues searching Plex. Results come up instantly.

One thing I'd love Plex to do is auto throttle bandwidth when streaming, especially if your connection gets wonky or something like on a cellular connection. I know Netflix does this, lowers quality if the stream can't keep up. Plex, you have to change it manually.

Searching is quick in Plex; I just meant I find Kodi is way quicker with going through lists and folders since it lets you brows by text only mode, which I find way better (jam as much into my screen as possible at once, as opposed to gargantuan icons so only 6 things can be seen on my TV at a time).

can kodi do internal network server things

like right now all my pornmedia is on a NAS and I have plex running on a separate box so my chromecast and PS4 can see and play the media, can I do that with kodi instead and get better performance since i don't ever use plex outside my network

The performance is better with Kodi but it's a moot point because you can't run Kodi on the PS4.

But yes, Kodi on my HTPC (NVIDIA Shield tv) is way quicker with loading and seeking through videos. But Plex is definitely better for simplicity and for playing your videos on things like phones.

yeah i didn't really realize what Kodi was, I thought it was a Plex analogue/competitor when really it's not a server at all

yeah, plex and emby are the server things

kodi is htpc front end software. you can run the plex client through kodi, i believe, if you're using someone else's plex library (for instance) while maintaining your own legal backups on an htpc and also run plex server on the same computer to share your media.

all of that is to say it's not terribly surprising that it can skip around and fast forward smoother since it's ostensibly playing everything locally

switch is going to be replaced with a 48 port PoE switch eventually, i was thinking about getting a pair of older cisco stackable switches but theyre loud and use a shitload of power. im just gonna get a ES-48-500w, i really only need 8 poe ports though so maybe going stackable is the way to go to save some scratch

were gonna buy a new house in a couple of years so when i do all my cable drops, speaker installs, etc. im going to put a 30a 240v circuit to the basement in a corner as a cable closet. should also completely eliminate the need for an entertainment center for the basement/tv room

its more of a comment about having a server rack in a house as opposed to where they belong, in data centers

also im sure other things share that circuit too

yeah im sure other things do. that would be an issue if i were plugging in a hair dryer and vacuum cleaner, and not the equivalent of a couple of lamps with 80 watt bulbs

i'm not keen on kodi's media library functions tbh (and i think also plex's but idk i've only barely experimented with it)

like it makes you categorise videos as either a movie or a tv show and a lot of times that's fair enough, like i wouldn't want to see futurama season 5 in a list of "movies" it's just a tv show season with fewer, longer episodes so that works. but then i added a third category so my library comes up as TV/Movies/Documentaries and i set the "documentaries" collection to be treated like tv shows so all my david attenborough stuff for example is kept organised, but i also have all these other standalone documentaries as well that in this schema would be better treated like "movies". so my options here are to either have four categories: TV/Movies/Documentaries (TV)/Documentaries (Movies), or to just keep it as three and have one big fake "show" called "misc documentaries" with a whole bunch of "episodes", but both of those are loving stupid

likewise you can sort tv episodes into seasons which mostly works but you can only have seasons sorted by number and then one optional extra one for "specials" that appears at the end when sometimes you get a show that doesn't exactly fit that model either

i'm not enough of a sperg to really care about these; i don't need to obsessively categorise everything perfectly, but at the same time it's like why am i even bothering with any of this at all then when i could just have a normal filesystem and open videos in windows explorer
