Just keep in mind that you're basically putting levers on the back of your couch. Levers multiply force. Those fasteners on the bottom would need to be a lot stronger than you think.

edit: It also assumes that the wood on the bottoms that you would be screwing into is right next to the fabric. Otherwise, it will pinch in the side cushions on the bottom piece, making your top pieces extend out even further than their regular positions.
