If the primary concern about Google is data collection I personally would get a rootable android phone, root it and do as you please with it. Root and install Orbot if you're hardcore. You don't have to log into a google account or use google services, you can just use whatsapp or whatever you want a smartphone for. Google doesn't get licensing fees for Android so if you don't get a Nexus phone you're not giving them any money.

If I knew of a real alternative that offers a real smartphone experience I'd say go for it, but I don't. As far as I know your options are an OS from one of the big evil corps, whether its Apple/Google/Microsoft, or getting a dumbphone.
