The "some reason" is the export of American culture, and one of the things we export is only allowing black people to play criminals and thugs, and our news which paints us all as such. They think that when they get here they can be "separate" from us and ingratiate themselves with the white power structure as "not one of those American blacks", but find out eventually that they are just another friend of the family to them just like us, just a friend of the family with an accent.

Is this similar reasoning to why Carribean Islanders emphasize where they're from? Not that I'm implying that there is some conflict there. Carribean Islander of course not being a very useful term anyway since there's plenty of latinx, white, native and asian people from the Carribean anyway.

No point doing this when Hong Kong is gonna be erased off the map in our generation!

A lot of chinese people think that it's 100% genetically impossible for non-chinese to speak chinese or understand chinese culture, so they need to adopt a western name for interfacing with non-chinese people because it would be impossible to expect anyone who isn't chinese to say their name. It's just become a traditional thing now as all the english language and international student programs tell them they simply have to adopt a western name as part of the program, and for doing business with western people in future. I thought it was weird as well. I had a friend from Taiwan named Ming. Not a hard name to say. But he had a western name of Mitchell. We'd tell him to just use his real name, be proud of who he is and such, but in the end he just had to tell us he was really uncomfortable using his chinese name as that simply wasn't what the other chinese students did, all chinese students learning english and talking to foreigners always use a western name, to do otherwise was stressful and uncomfortable. We realized we were putting our culture surrounding names on him when he viewed names very differently. For us your name is your name, it's a deeply personal thing and someone refusing to use it or refusing to even try to pronounce it is insulting. For him and many of the chinese students, they did not see names the same way and felt very uncomfortable using their chinese name when interacting with non-chinese people.

Dunno about Mandarin but for Cantonese speaking immigrants there's a couple things like HK being a British Colony so having an English name when interacting with the gwailo has been a thing for a while (also why, for example, there are probably more Chinese people named Clarence for example, than White people in any major city in Canada). Again, can't speak for experience for your Taiwanese friend here but in Canto, Ming has at least 3 different ways you can say it with different tones so you might say "Ming" with flat tone but this theoretically Cantonese Ming might actually be "Ming" with a rising tone and that would be a different word altogether. Sorta like calling someone named Tyler "Taylor" and being unable to tell the difference.

Another reason why most people don't bother using their Chinese names is that to say them right you have to code-switch into Cantonese pronounciation to say your name and then back to English which feels really unnatural. Upside to this is that it's super easy to do a fob impression if you just don't code-switch back.

Sorry for the China derail!

e: also there's a bit of "Western names will let me be taken more seriously in a professional manner" thing going on

Also the name thing happens with South Asians too with people cutting their 20+ letter name down to the first syllable and making it white friendly to say/look at (Raj, Vij, Shawn, Norm) in a professional setting but that's mostly out of my wheelhouse.

From a couple pages back, but one thing about Latinx voters for Trump is that if anything, they hate illegals way more than anyone else does because 1) they're SO tantalizingly close to white passing now and 2) illegals give them a really bad rep by ethnic association. I don't know what it's like for black people but a lot of other minorities use recent immigrants of their group as punching bags for all the poo poo they get thrown by white people and the fact that undocumented immigrants are, well, illegal, emboldens them more. It's easier to deal with racism when you can just immediately think "lol silly white man, those negative stereotypes do not apply to me, a law-abiding member of society, he's just confusing me for those awful border hopping Mexicans" and somehow think their poo poo slides right off you like you're made of Teflon.

People seriously just say "no blacks" or "asian women only" in some SA based dating thing and then say it's just a matter of taste? There's such a massive variety of shapes and features and figures within each "race" as well as cultures and personalities. I can see someone knowing after a lot of experience they tend not to get along with Saudi's or Australians, but to just write off a huge broad category of people seems... well... racist.

It is more or less acceptable to talk about racial dating preferences in public, nevermind on the internet, under the guise of "well you can't help what you're attracted to".

Well at least kids these days are getting exposed to the fact that intersectionality is a lie at such a young age (even though I feel stupid saying that cause I'm not black). I do love that it comes from the "most Liberal* city in Ohio" though.

I'm not sure I completely understood the quote but I got the gist of "it's because of malaria." I would never have thought to connect cystic fibrosis to white people. My high school bio teacher's son has that disease and told us about it. Thank you for the explanation!

Sickled red blood cells are... well... sickle shaped and thus tend to pop a lot earlier than normal red blood cells. This is normally bad cause it means you run low on blood faster than normal people.

However, malaria is a parasite that infects red blood cells. If it infects a sickled red blood cell, the red blood cell will usually pop before the malaria can fully grow and dies as well. The problem is that you can get two copies of the sickle cell gene and that leads to all your blood being sickle shape, which is a lot worse for your mortality than the malaria protection can make up for.

Since the mutation started in Africa and Africa is one of the main centres of malaria in the world, that's why a lot of black people have it. There's sickle cell in India as well but that's because Africans made their way over there and the heterozygous (partially sickled blood cell) people had malaria protection.

While some of that has to do with the original EU game being Euro-centric (as in the board game), I'd say that the unmarked areas are less about them not being important and more about there just not being a ton of well-documented history there. The EU games have gotten better regarding that in later iterations and patches, either implementing what I believe are newly discovered/determined histories, doing more research or simply going with the slightly hazy info that is there and extrapolating a nation idea from there. Of course, that's not going to be great either because there weren't really proper mapped borders (especially in those northern areas above Russia) in a lot of cases that would fit modern borders but there are ways to alleviate that. Most of the time Paradox devs only exclude things when they have to because of scope (or because of DLC ideas but that's a whole different story).

Also, isn't there already a couple of mods that do that very thing? Or at least something similar to that? I mean, it might've gotten lost in the myriad ofweird mods these kinds of games spawn.

fwiw they make a lot of progress every patch on fleshing out the African continent. This is how the starting map looks now.

There's always more work to be done but they've fleshed out African religions a little, added a whole bunch of Coptic mechanics for Ethiopia and neighbors and removed the whole Westernization thing so that non-European countries don't start with massive technology penalties anymore. Heck, with a little knowhow and luck you can make it so that Europe has to come to you to learn the secrets of Colonialism or Global Trade to remove their own tech penalty.

I was doing some thinking about ethnicity and nationality and how one can chose to embrace one or the other or both (this may have to do with Asian stuff but I really don't think anyone cares enough to read about that aside from men wringing their hands on r/asianmasculinity) and I started thinking about the whole connecting oneself with ancient Egypt thing. As a Chinese guy I am defined, whether I like it or not, by my connection to my ethnicity and if I completely rejected it I would still be defining myself in relation to it and the same could be said about a person with Mexican, Jamaican, Italian, Irish etc. heritage. As far as I know, Black Americans' shared history begins with slavery and most connections to tradition and history before that were mostly (if not completely) severed so I can understand trying to look beyond that and find an identity further in the past. I get why they would want to connect themselves with something like that cause heck, white people consider ancient Rome as part of their history and millions of ethnic Han consider themselves linked to Chinese history even though they were probably actually subjugated by said Chinese people centuries or millenia ago.

I'm not trying to be condescending or anything like "we did some DNA testing and it turns out that some of y'all are Igbo so here's your book on Nigerian history and traditions and that's what y'all are now stop pretending you can relate to Nubian royalty" or whatever, I'm just wondering if this whole creation of a linked history with ancient Egypt or even looking into one's own African roots is ever going to resonate and become integrated into black identity or if it'll just be kind of feel artificial (? can I even say that) like Kwanzaa. I guess the question is more like "are Black Americans' African roots permanently severed or do they have a chance to grow again?"
