Peel posted:what are duckworth and gabbard actually like policy- and rhetoric-wise if we're thinking we want more populist credibility next time around for me duckworth is less about her exact ideas and more about her being new to congress and a vet. if she can be turned into a berniecrat (or better yet already is) she could be the next obama. gabbard is also acceptable.

Peel posted:true, i hadn't considered that people have four years to establish themselves in a new rhetorical environment as was mccain. being a vet on its own won't be a huge deal but otoh she lost her fuckin legs in the military which is pretty fuckin metal. it's just one of those things that could help a bit. her being a relative unkown is i think still undoubtedly her best strength and i hope she can seize that and do something with it; i'll be greatly disappointed if she instead just goes full establishment. this may be a good time to get people to start writing her and trying to get her on the populism train.

If he did win, he'd likely only serve one term. 4 years of bernie and then him handing it off to a berniecrat, likely one who isn't even in congress yet, in 2024 is my dream scenario

Alter Ego posted:It'd be Obama all over again. That said, what better way to refresh in everyone's mind that Donald Trump is, indeed, a racist bigot. if she does indeed run, she needs to respond to whatever awful things trump would undoubtedly say the same way as she did when the guy she was running against was a giant racist: do not even acknowledge it. draw no attention to it. we cannot have another candidate who focuses on how much of a shithead trump is. it did not work.

if bernie is still healthy and sharp in 2020 and chooses a much younger vp with similar ideology to assuage any concerns about his age, i believe he could win. he would surely only be a one term but i think he is the best shot they have. just don't hire jeff weaver this time please

Again, 54% turnout is loving godawful, and low turnout pretty much ensures Republicans win every time. after this election i think it is safe to say that nobody should trust the polls ever again regardless tbh

if any democrat from ny runs in the 2020 primaries it needs to be paul tonko because he is cool and good, but he's also too focused on a single (albeit important) issue to realistically win.
