Also black people, latinos, asians, muslims, students, and lgbtq people all live in Rust belt states too and are under daily attack by their lovely state government. It's sort of insane how cosmopolitan and non-white are getting associated as synonyms in some post-election takes A lot of minority communities are poor which means not being able to travel and experience a lot so they're very non-cosmopolitan in some respects Like yeah, some rural whites haven't left their states, but plenty of black and brown people haven't been able to leave their cities or neighborhoods Ability/willingness to travel is a trash way to base political analysis

Honestly, I think there might be contingent of voters who want the guy most seemingly opposed to DC to run the place. Like, plenty of white Americans are sort of racist but know white supremacy or some variation on that idea is real and is bad, so sending a black guy to DC makes sense to screw with the system. They might be afraid of crime in the "inner cities," but they know a few black or brown people that are good people. Similarly, Trump is a goddamn reality show freak so hopefully he'll hurt the elite in the country in some way to, since they all seem to detest him so much. GOP backers tend to not be super public, so if you're not up on the news you can miss out on the collection of bizarre billionaires backing him. These people aren't hardcore white nationalists, but minority issues are not really important to them. Ok that's my unscientific take on why Trump can be elected while Obama is popular, I'll go back to Leftist taunts after this.

Pener Kropoopkin posted:Can we talk now about how the idea that "demographics are destiny" is basically unreconstructed race science? Actual response to this is I think "demographics are destiny" ideology hosed up the Dems more than "identity politics" Viewing the electorate as just race, gender, and education (as a proxy for class) means the Dems missed a lot of obvious things. Like white women going to Trump, and Mook turning out other Trump supporters. It's also blinding a lot of the debate over Trump's base, because many commentators are assuming the high school educated white guy in Pittsburgh who's just sort of pissy about DC is as racist and ignorant as the high school educated guy in N. Carolina getting ready for the Klan. The geography of those two things can be switched too, since not all white guys in the South are racist and not all Northerners are woke. Things like social networks, life experiences, type of employment and union membership are just as important in determining beliefs in many social theories, but are hard for data firms to track. So you get a politics of what your data guys can track, and it winds up they think of things in terms of race science. Hot sauce and Beyonce for the black turnout, Abuela for the Latinos, and Lena Dunham for white women. Actually talking to people, learning of their concerns, and making a good faith effort to address them is better than whatever the gently caress Clinton 2016 just did.
