Megiddo posted:And I'm sure that if we had months of Trump hitting him for being a socialist commie and dog whistle America First/anti-"Globalist" bullshit, coupled with Bernie's minority turnout being worse than Hillary's that things would've been so much different! Either way, I think the main thing is that Bernie was the only other real "outsider" candidate in the running, right? Hillary contrasted perfectly with Trump's message; and whenever Trump said anything her reaction was a kind of arrogant dismissal. I can imagine Sanders saying "Well, I agree with Mr. Trump, however..." And he does do that. And he's believable. Turning Trump's strengths against him, instead of amplifying them. But whatever.

Yeah I wouldn't call Long a communist, as communists at the time considered him to be a fascist. (Look up CPUSA literature on him -- back when the CPUSA was an extension of the Comintern.) But I don't think that was accurate, and he was maybe more of a Peronist? He attracted support from fascists like Charles Coughlin, but the extent of their relationship is unclear to me. Edit: OK this is Wikipedia but: Peronism is widely regarded as a form of corporate socialism, or "right-wing socialism".[2] Perón's public speeches were consistently nationalist and populist. It would be difficult to separate Peronism from corporate nationalism, for Perón nationalized Argentina's large corporations, blurring distinctions between corporations and government. At the same time, the labor unions became corporate, ceding the right to strike in agreements with Perón as Secretary of Welfare in the military government from 1943–45. In exchange, the state was to assume the role of negotiator between conflicting interests. That ... sounds like how Long governed Louisiana. The more I think about the election the more I get shades of Wendy Davis. Tons of money poured in but was badly mismanaged. Identity politics backfired while she also ran too far to the center on issues. Delusional Democrats thinking she had a better chance than she did, etc. etc.

punk rebel ecks posted:Why is it that so many liberal cities, and arguably many liberal states, champion the poor so much, yet have crazy cost of living? Shouldn't cost of living be like one of the main issues of the American left? On par I'd say the liberal states have a mixed record, with generally lower poverty rates, as the worst poverty in the U.S. tends to be in places like the rural South, Indian reservations and the Texas-Mexico border. Cheaper places to live but people who live there get paid poo poo.

punk rebel ecks posted:IIRC isn't the poverty rate tied to the national wage and not the corresponding quality of life cost? Like I believe it is if you make less than $12,000 a year, you live in poverty. While that would ring true both in Alabama and in California, the latter it could easily be $17,000 due to the cost of living, but all of those people aren't counted due to wages naturally being higher, but not high enough to onset the cost of living differentiation.

I went when the middle-class dad called his congressman the single greatest threat to his family's safety, and then the guy accosting his rep. If Trump was elected from a backlash then the backlash to the backlash might swing wildly.
