political correctness did not elect trump. the democratic party and especially the hillary campaign ignoring the economic concerns of the American working class, both white and minorities, did

if you're familiar with zizek's other stuff, that's exactly his point. political correctness is an attempt to shut down, say, racism, without addressing the relationship between class struggle and racist ideology. trump says some vile poo poo, twitter eggs and your racist uncle say some vile poo poo, hillary and liberals are aghast but, crucially, offer no response beyond "naughty naughty", because going deeper than that would mean addressing the injustice of neoliberal economic policy (which is the thing that some otherwise potentially sensible people are getting angry about and dealing with by enacting white supremacist fantasies).

liberals don't WANT rubes to move beyond racism and towards socialism.

who was trump fighting for? people who work for a living and by extension the companies they work at.

who was trump fighting against? the political establishment and it's byzantine taxes and regulations that gently caress over individuals and drive companies out of business or out of the country, the big banks who have bought out the establishment to rip everyone off, and all the various undesirables who are either looking for a free ride or even worse to take what is yours.

who was hillary fighting for, and who against?

people want dignified work (dignified among their social class, not among liberal coastal elites) with decent pay and benefits and they understand that while their relationship with the company that employs them is fundamentally antagonistic they still need that company to not go out of business

and while they may want to eat the rich on wallstreet they probably dont want to eat some guy who owns a local business even if he is a dick to his employees

if only there was some way of organizing society so that everyone could work to the best of their ability while receiving an equitable share of the wealth produced by their labor...

quote:

The Constitution has no inherent authority or obligation. It has no authority or obligation at all, unless as a contract between man and man. And it does not so much as even purport to be a contract between persons now existing. It purports, at most, to be only a contract between persons living eighty two hundred thirty years ago. And it can be supposed to have been a contract then only between persons who had already come to years of discretion, so as to be competent to make reasonable and obligatory contracts. Furthermore, we know, historically, that only a small portion even of the people then existing were consulted on the subject, or asked, or permitted to express either their consent or dissent in any formal manner. Those persons, if any, who did give their consent formally, are all dead now. Most of them have been dead forty, fifty, sixty, or seventy one hundred eighty years. And the constitution, so far as it was their contract, died with them. They had no natural power or right to make it obligatory upon their children. It is not only plainly impossible, in the nature of things, that they could bind their posterity, but they did not even attempt to bind them. That is to say, the instrument does not purport to be an agreement between any body but “the people” then existing; nor does it, either expressly or impliedly, assert any right, power, or disposition, on their part, to bind anybody but themselves.

time for a modern constitution for modern americans imo
