Are you putting anything into these critters but 2 points of Int? It seems like sheer numbers are pretty useful for now.

You don't even really need the int if you're just cranking out fire creations. Just let them go crazy.

It's taken hundreds of years for these ones to get independent. Obedience is built into Serviles, literally, so the Shapers don't see any reason not to let them reproduce.

...when - or if - we escape from Sucia, will anywhere be safe for us while the Shapers still hold sway in that land? And if death for our overreach and our intrusion are not unreasonable expectations, why are we so wholly devoted to the Shapers?

Without going too far into it, Shapers tend to play things obsessively safe and their security measures bring a new meaning to "redundancy." Just being on a Barred island like this has a good chance of getting you put to death, because it was probably Barred for a really good reason.

The real problem with the Emus was that they would kick down fences and allow rabbits (a very damaging invasive pest in Australia) to run amok. In an act so out of the Shaper playbook it's frightening, the Australian government released targeted germ warfare controls in the form of the myxoma virus, and later supplemented it with calcivirus, which escaped containment during field trials and is currently ravaging invasive populations in dry areas (a benign variant that exists in Australia's colder climes has resulted in a resistance in the population of those areas.)

This is why the Shapers are paranoid.

We only see the really lovely parts of the setting. There are developed and peaceful places that are paradise compared to the hellscapes you see in the series.

"Kill Everyone" is not only a viable choice, but the correct one from the point of view of the Shapers. Literally the only reason the inhabitants of Sucia have been getting away with this stuff is that nobody is supposed to be here. Otherwise there would have been a team of pissed off Shapers with an army of fire-breathing monsters slaughtering them years ago.

Nah, my hypothesis is that the canisters are melding you towards the Ideal Shaper. What, you think that Shapers aren't rear end in a top hat megalomaniacs? The Shapers on this island were just trying to figure out a more efficient way to train their replacements that didn't involve a bunch of rigorous culture-fit testing. Why try to find people that have the right mindset when you can just make them have the right mindset?

The Shapers are really into consequences and the price of power. Something that gives power without any effort (like the canisters) would be considered heresy to them.

If nobody's mentioned it, the entire Geneforge series is on steam for 6 bucks.

Buy it anyway, support the best writing in indie games. Hell, in most games.

Incidentally, I decided to look up the name Goettsch. It's a variant spelling of Goetsch, which is a "pet form" of either Gottfried or Gottschalk. "Gott" means either "good" or "god", "fried" means "peace" or "protection", and "schalk" means "servant".

Maybe Goettsch is a Servile who was granted Shaper powers by the Geneforge, and now works to maintain the peace here! :eng101:

No creation can use the Geneforge or the Canisters without dissolving (painfully) into goo, it's built in. The Shapers make very sure that their power remains theirs.

Serviles aren't bred for war, that's what Battle Alphas and the like are for. There are Serviles bred for heavy labor who have learned to fight.

I don't know if dude was just mad and desperate, or if he thinks the power of the Geneforge is going to make getting a body back just, like, snap-snap simple.

The more we learn about this thing the more dangerous it sounds.

Look at it this way: the locals learned how to use magic to manipulate DNA, with predictable results. "Predictable results" is the important thing here, since the Shapers don't actually know how Shaping works -- it takes tons and tons of trial and error with relatively crude methods to make a new kind of creation. This is the missing ingredient to overcoming all limits on Shaping, so of course, they used it to make the world's biggest canister. This canister Shapes you into a living god of Shaping and Sorcery.

Do you think the people who decided to use the greatest of all possible medical breakthroughs to make a bigger gun are sane?

The second protagonist should be Precipitate, for a number of reasons.
