Slimes have the best fusion compatibility with all classes.

Get those 100 DP on a slime, level the reward to 1, and fuse that slime into someone useful.

The other aspect of Failure dungeons is that the items within aren't effected by the title, so you can use your Bottlemail(s)* to pick up anything that looks nice/has a ton of Mana in it while breaking everything else for huge chunks of XP.

*Any class with a high Steal stat can contribute at first, but once you hit a certain point they're pretty much your only option.

It's not like I'm using the cheapest setup in the world. But I'm at the point where I might have to try doing the audio as a separate track and add it on, which would be a lot more work and I worry would also lead to a sound that would be a little less spontaneous. Still a lot I need to learn, hahaha.

Probably a discussion for the tech support thread, but there are tons of AudioInput->USB adapters on eBay in the $5 range. It would be easy to add a 2nd input if you wanted to go through the effort. There should also be a way to do it in Software easily in Windows 10+ without a separate interface, not sure about older versions.

Fun fact, on an old computer I had a copy of AVS Video Editor that I hadn't used in forever. I was actually able to recover my license from it, so I have some video editing software again. Probably won't mess with it all the time, but it will make doing a tutorial on Dark Points a lot easier. Might be able to get it to adjust audio as well. In the interrim, will look at tweaking audio settings around. I've got an adapter which is supposed to give my microphone more power which, in turn, is supposedly going to make it pick up a little better; we'll see how that works. Probably not very well.

In the meantime:
Chapter 4: Isle of Healing Waters: Tragedy's Stage (4,4) [018]
Chapter 5: Scarlet the Brave [019]

And I think someone needs to point out something that I don't understand, because I thought Slimes had a remove of 1, not 6? So I'm confused by that. Or maybe there's another creature type I'm supposed to set up for fun explosives time?

I can see why this game gets such high praise for its story and characters, but I can't help but feel that Marona is not someone to be emulated despite being a paragon of virtue; because in the real world someone like that would just get constantly taken advantage of without the payoff.

It does sadden me a little that is how I look at the world these days. I feel like I'd have a very different personal response to the character and game if I played it when it first came out 10 years ago.

Iunnrais

The story would likely have a VERY different feel if we were actually relying on getting paid to survive. There's a bit of ludonarrative dissonance in that we're told we're not getting paid, but every monster we kill actually puts money in our pockets. If that wasn't there, and money only came from end of quest rewards, and we STILL got stiffed... I think players would be a LOT more upset about it.

The game would have to be restructured fairly significantly to manage this, of course. Because being unable to heal between fights because you have no money would suck, which sounds about the video game equivalent of not being able to afford groceries.

Now I'm thinking a pro-socialist game about overcoming the oppressive bourgeoisie with that kind of gameplay would be interesting...

Yeup, that'll explain it.

I actually did a video showing how Dark Points work complete with their ultimate reward, but the quality of it was exceptionally lacking so I, uh, get to redo it and kill everyone on my island again! But at least I imagine the next time I do it it will be a little easier to explain and to watch. I'll do one again, edit it for conciseness, and then go from there. I'm holding off on doing a dungeon for now, because when I do it I'm going to need to break it into a few parts and make sure it works well to watch. Dungeons are an amazing tool ripe for exploitation, but are rather tedious to set up and to play. I'm not a very big fan of them, as anyone can tell. Probably do the dungeon after I beat Chapter 6? Guess we'll see.

The next couple of maps set us up with sabre kitties! These would eventually find their way into the Disgaea universe, as well as Makai Kingdom. I could create them, but I already have a scrabbit so there's really no need.

Why do you keep killing corpses? Are they worth any mana or XP? Dead characters don't send protection and unless you run into a healer with revive spells, they shouldn't be a threat.

Using skills levels them up (and also levels up the energy used to power them) so if there's nothing else to kill it's bye bye corpses. This is especially common if I'm killing time trying to capture an object or pass a few rounds. I know I've mentioned that a few times, but I suppose it does get in the way of viewability so I'll keep that in mind.

Dark Points Tutorial which explains how killing your own people is a bad plan, unless you want to sacrifice a character for an awesome attack. This time recorded a lot better than the first time, and I feel I got the relevant information on here. I didn't bring up how Grannies could heal dark points, in part because I'm not at the part of the game where I can get them yet (although I did mention this when I unlocked Old Men.)

That makes sense, but it looks like some of your turns could be better used, but then again, my runs consist of Marona with a very big axe one-shotting everything on the map at this point. Killing objects might be more productive for this than corpses since 1) They're actually worth mana and XP and 2) the target of a cast doesn't matter for leveling skills and SP.

I'll definitely keep that in mind, especially for future videos because I'm sure no one wants to watch me just waste turns for seemingly no reason. I will mention that especially early on, I feel it's a really bad idea to only focus on Marona. I feel this method ultimately sets people up for failure later on in the game. By having Marona focusing on Blinding Light and her Heart magics, at level 15 she actually has enough energy to use Revive a couple of times should she need to, and she'll be in a solid position to heal herself and others later on. Also, by not one-shotting everything with her, I'm able to level up some other characters. Some of these characters will be with me on the final fight. Others won't be, but I'm using and holding on to because I want something they have on them. One could argue that by exploiting dungeons, levels become almost a non-issue, and there's truth to that... but this method robs those characters of the opportunity to level the energy reserve of the moves they intend to use, which cripples their usefulness.

Of course, I've already made one really horrible mistake. :/ Mystics have Healing Birth, which heals a fair bit of health on a Phantom when they are summoned in. This is NOT the ability that will regenerate roughly 10% of Marona's HP every turn. I've been holding on to him for a while for almost no reason, and as a result will likely move him onto someone else. The soldier's ability will be put on Ash, so he can stay in an extra round. At some point, I'll need to reroll the healer, but with a significant boost to speed. Oh, and I keep putting off making a dungeon, that'll need to change soon.

Might start making super weapons kind of soon and explain what that's about because they can really make or break the game's difficulty (until they are stolen... >.>)

When I've had time I've been doing some grinding, need to push certain characters to 15 for chapter 6.

Chapter 5: Forestia: Green Cradle (5,3) [022]
Chapter 5: Forestia: Yggdrasil Sleep (5,4) [023]

Marona is not the smartest Chroma in The Phantom Tollbooth, to be sure. But this is arguably not the worst client she's had, which is a plus!

I want to point out that it is that Behemoth on Green Cradle that allows Marona to heal 10% of her life every turn once you fuse its passive onto her. However, killing the yellow bastard once isn't enough. Since it is a beast, you still need to kill 20 of the darn things, and at this point in teh game it's more trouble than its worth. You likely won't have enough Mana on Marona to fuse the ability over anyways.

Happy Thanksgiving, all. Not saying I won't be checking on the thread but the next time I post a video will be Friday.

Chapter 6
Chapter 6: Unexpected Reward + Innocent Entry (6, 1) [024]
Chapter 6: Verdant Guardiana: Mischief Garden (6, 2) [025]
Chapter 6: Verdant Guardiana: Hidden Hall (6, 3) [026]
Chapter 6: Verdant Guardiana: Green Paradise (6, 4) [027]

Chapter 6 throws you right into the first map without the chance to realize what you're doing so I just recorded that map with the Chapter 6 intro, which wasn't optimal, but hey it works. Marona is sent out by Bamboo Co to clear an island of horrible monsters. How will this work out for her, and for Bamboo Co? What are the monsters on the island, and why are they fighting so fiercely?

Thank you for following me this far into this playthrough, and I'll continue to improve upon it. I did discover something which made me consider stopping for a bit, although given what I'm working with I'll still work on this even with the limitations. The microphone I am using requires use of Phantom Power, but the USB device I bought for this purpose absolutely isn't enough. So at some point in the near future I'll need to get a $30 amp, plug that thing in, and then maybe it won't sound like I'm a mute drowning underwater while choking on horse weiners. I tried using a different microphone for the recording of 6-4 and while I feel the recording is serviceable the recording came up with so many new issues I'll probably just go back to the old one.

We'll do the intro to Chapter 7, then I'll show off the dungeons because we really need levels. I also am making it a point to go back and unlock monsters I haven't acquired yet mostly for completionist's sake, but in part because there some passive abilities that will really take us far in the future. For example, I really want Quick Strike on my Dungeon Monk.

I've always liked the fact that the worst title is actually the most useful. Failure Dungeons and Failure Fusions really let you break this game wide open.

Once your DM has leveled up a bit more, you should try cycling through to find a dungeon with Weird enemies, get yourself an extra Bottlemail. You'll need one with a super high speed and/or quick strike for stealing boss items (Akkristor!), and then a few more with high speed + A speed boosting item + quick strike to confine into boss items and hopefully take them home. Hourglass boss items make a good choice (they have SPD based attacks), and you can also use weeds, trolleys, or anything with a speed boost. Reincarnation is your friend! Good to see Akkristor gaining a few levels there.

I noticed you were sliding around on the floor in that slippery dungeon. Ground-targetting abilities like Fire or Ice, ones that let you target freely inside their range rather than a fixed distance from the user, also let you position the user while targeting. This is a good way to get around slippery floors, since you don't slide while doing so.
On the other hand, by trying to get your character to move inches at a time, you can use the slippery floor to your benefit to gain more movement, with less control over your final destination.

A note about special stages in random dungeons. If you stumble into a special stage (like that 2X money stage you showed off) and you leave (via Return), the next time you enter that dungeon, you will still be in that special stage. There are some very easy stages (such as "Lone <insert monster here>" or "Minor <monster> Team") where if you have the speed and steal stats, you can grab some VERY high-level items and make so much money that Marona could buy the entire island chain (if the game would let her)!

The exception to this is, of course, Boss items! If you leave a Boss stage and return, the Boss can't have a boss-only item.

I've been thinking on that whole "Buy the island" thing. Marona collects Bor as a chroma in two ways: slaying foes and completing jobs. But why does she get money when killing some random scrabbit or putty, and why can't she use it to pay off her island?
I think the answer is that Marona's battle winnings are not real Bor, but rather Phantom Bor. Think about it, Marona can take items back to Phantom Island that her Phantoms can use. She buys items from phantom merchants, and sells them back to them. Those items her phantoms use are Phantom items, and the Bor used to buy them, or create new phantoms, is all Phantom Bor.
Thats why she still does jobs to get money from clients. She can't buy her island with money only her Phantom friends can use.

That does make sense for this game, but not for anything in Disgaea where you have the exact same issue but it's assumed created units are real and their equipment is real. In Laharl's last extra stage, he says something about training in Item world to become even stronger. Some RPGs would solve this by putting a cap on your money and set dialogue prices to be over that amount.

No game play because I need to grind up quite a few levels. Chapter 7 is one of the most solid difficulty spikes in the game. Man, are you all in for a special treat. We have four levels to burn through, as Marona makes her way through the Island of Evil in search for... a bird.

Thanks! It has always surprised me that no one has really done a solid playthrough of the game. Some people have put together montages of all the attacks in the game, which are pretty neat, or some of the extra battles, but not the story itself. This surprised me, since I feel the story is rather unique for what NIS has done in games since. It doesn't have any of the weird sexual innuendo stuff that Disgaea manages to sneak in, for example, and while the main character is more naive than the fact your name pops up when you search for naive people in Google she doesn't come off as ignorantly full of herself or overbearingly entitled. Hopefully we can pull through to the end! This game has a lot of chapters.

I'll make sure to record Granny getting her new name, and then I'll give you credit.

It is surprising that the amount of BOR being asked for for the island is basically the equivalent of about 300-500 moderate level weapons.

I noticed this in 7,3 and another of your videos. If you throw something and it doesn't land where you want it but was not caught by the enemy or sent overboard, you can cancel the throw and re-throw it.

It's been a while since I've played through this game, but as I recall we don't really know what happened with Scarlet the Brave until about the beginning of the third and final arc. I could be wrong though! Lots of putty and Castille this arc.

So I'll post the 1st and 2nd fight of chapter 9 up soon. It still seems kind of odd to me that Marona is so sheltered and so used to being betrayed and hurt that her first thought upon losing a prized necklace is "Oh no, the person who gave this to me is going to be upset and won't be my friend anymore."

You aren't even a quarter of the way through if you count all the bonus content and "Another Marona" which is a whole second quest.

Marona has lived by herself with Ash for most of her life (the spoiler has a cut-scene later that kind of elaborates on her story after the events of the prologue but I think somewhere it says she was 5 when her parents were killed). She was pretty much home-schooled by Ash and has almost no social interaction with anyone outside of people calling her "possessed" and running away. She's also 13 and she barely knows what a friend is, so her reaction is not that unbelievable to me. I've met people like her in real life (not ghost summoning orphans but kids who were never properly socialized with other kids). It's weird and kind of sad.

I also for the longest time could not figure out that Cauldron is a Merman. I kept wondering if there was some kind of shark-class in the game.

Do you have any idea what you're supposed to do with the SP found on take-home objects? I can't fuse it off to anyone and it doesn't get used when the object is used on a map.

Are you talking about how some objects have an innate amount of energy tied to them? Because if so, I believe you actually CAN fuse it off to other characters, but it's not at all a 1 for 1 but rather on a sliding exp scale based on the amount of exp behind what the item has and the grading scale of learning the character in question has. More confusing, to me, is how if a character knows a skill and an item knows a skill using said skill levels it for both person and item, and I'm curious to see if it's worth it to "fold" that item's skill level onto the character using it for a skill leveling boost or if it's simply not worth it.

Ninja EditI tried it and no it doesn't work. That SP must just be for looks, or something. It doesn't even seem to affect the energy a character has when you summon onto it.

My "folding" plan does work but honestly the gains are not really worth it in most doses.

I'm going to try to do some more gameplay today. I finally get a day fully off, and... kind of want to spend it with my family a little more than games or internet things. So I'll probably jump on this later tonight, knock some stuff out, see where things go.

We get to meet up with Canary again. Remember Canary?

I am kind of interested in how the Japanese version handled the H.A.R.M. acronym.

Mt. Kazan: Land of Fire + Finale (10, 4) [053]
Chapter 11: Paradise Saved? (11, 1) [054]

So on the one hand, Canary kind of shows his true colors and gets his just desserts, which is nice. On the other hand, "Papa" Cauldron is just waaay too creepy for me. Boy if he didn't go from "I hate that little bitch her island is mine" to "I know what she needs, a fuckin' FAN CLUB" in just a couple of episodes. What's up with that?

In Chapter 11, Marona finds herself facing off against Bamboo Company who has caught on to her lies. Will she side with her sick friend who needs medicine to live? Or will she side with putties, the adorable thieves that they are?

Also, I've been trying to show off different moves now and again, and even create Charizard the dragon. Seriously, though, Dragons are not very good units. Sure, they've got reasonable stats in and off themselves, but they are SLOOOW, they don't move very far, and they only stay on the map for two turns. It sure is fun to pick them up and use them for their fire breath attack though. I'll decide later if I want to exploit them with the power of Big Bang or just swap them out with something out later.
