Thank you very much. That's exactly the perspective to help me think things through. I'm caught up on the question of what I'm prepared to do and endure, but I agree that I have to know my exact lines before I show up.

I just might record things.

If you do this be mindful that some antifa orgs will ask you not to record or photograph them, particularly if they're in black bloc, and you should do your best to respect that -- they're there for your protection too, after all.

You may also want to get Signal for your phone, read about how to set it up, and reach out to people in various orgs to coordinate with them so you are where you will be most helpful.

Personally I can't buy into whole-hog anarchism because I think hierarchies involving power and access to resources tend to form in human societies and without systems in place to protect the most vulnerable people and ensure they receive resources they will inevitably end up either exploited or oppressed in the long term. And I haven't seen a convincing proposal for how to deal with that under an anarchist system. Just saying "hash it out democratically" doesn't work for me.

I respect the philosophical underpinnings of anarchism and I consider anarchists my comrades but I definitely don't think it's the best way to run a society, though it is definitely better than capitalism (not that that's a high bar).

The real obstacle in my view regardless of which direction you go is that you would essentially need a generation or three to raise people with dramatically different values from what you find in common American society. The core American values of individualism and exceptionalism are anathema to a functioning anarchist or even socialist society. Unfortunately there is no good way of replacing those on a wide enough scale short of "raise people from childhood to value different things" and I have not seen much from any of the bigger movements about how to do that.

Add onto that that a lot of far leftists are young broke people who don't want children for various reasons myself included.

When my company did layoffs they didn't tell anyone in advance, waited for everyone to come to work on the day they were going to do it, called them all in a meeting an hour after they arrived to tell them they're fired, and while they were in the meeting went to their desk and confiscated their laptops and all the company property just in case they tried to steal it.

We were then told which half of our team members were gone sporadically, by word of mouth, and I thought this one guy still worked there for a full 3 days afterwards and kept sending him emails :ohdear:

This exact thing happened at my workplace recently right down to not telling anyone who got laid off, along with cutting my hours down to 27/week from 35 not two weeks after promising me a bump to 40, and it was the thing that prompted me to reach out to a few organizations to see about introducing the idea of unionizing to my workplace.

I work for an NPO though so I'm not sure how differently it works and I know the second the idea gets momentum I will almost certainly be fired, which is kind of scary.
