lol but serious question has anyone read

and is it good

I have and it's a really, really good read. It gives an incredibly in depth examination of the Nazi attitude towards art and Hitler's own perspective, and argues that if Hitler hadn't been an artist with some degree of cultural sophistication, he actually would have been less dangerous and destructive a ruler.

In particular I liked the sections about Entartete Kunst (though who wouldn't) and just how much opera Hitler took in on the average year (a lot).

By way of comparison, Spotts calls Mussolini a cretinous philistine whose unsophisticated, oafish nature prevented him from making Fascist Italy all that dangerous a state to its neighbours, so we may have!

That fits with Trump's greatest supporters being Italian-Americans too.

We should be worried about Kanye's presidency though.

Perhaps you should try studying a little architectural history and theory so that you can understand the importance of Gehry within the contemporary lexicon. He's an influential person for a reason. He allowed architecture to channel expressionism after the 20th Century had sapped modernism and minimalism to it's untimely end. You don't have to like everything he does, but what he does is widely respected among architects because he changed the rulebook a few decades ago.

yes i really enjoy it when architects scar the world with their aesthetic experiments that fail to function as buildings

why would you make something that is supposed to be a cultural center so antagonistic to its surroundings?

well you'd do that if you were a lovely architect i guess

Surprisingly, being a menace to its neighbors actually pushed that building way ahead of the rest of his works, becoming a true artistic masterpiece. Then they went and ruined it.

A European country electing something who knows what they're doing should make for a refreshing bit of novelty at least.

Houston, we're Havana problem.
architecture that is "rational" and is focused primarily on practicality is how we got the projects buildings, which hopefully, if you're being snarky about architecture, you know were a disaster. Not that I think Gehry is cool, it's just super rationalist architecture is Pruitt-Igoe and it's actually bad on both an aesthetic and an ethical level.

Sorry, but that simply isn't true. The projects were the apex of the international style and it was the height of modernist architecture which saw a "one size fits all" architectural style as being the remedy for what ails you spatially and residentially. But, um, different communities have different needs and can't all be stuffed into generic huge project boxes with the expectations that they will "behave" rationally now that their housing is "rational." Architecture is just as ideological as any other cultural artifact.

It's less different needs, and more that the basic design assumes people are automatons who need rational storage between being at work, as opposed to a place where they can create a community. That's why those designs are awful anywhere.

I'm a door guy at a small nightclub. The sort of nightclub that, like, kind of caters to white hipsters, but it caters to hipsters in the way that you can guarantee there's going to be a fair bit of Selena every night, and the closing playlist always, always, always, includes como la flor. Anyway, I'm a big guy. Tall and broad. The bar prides itself on being a safe and affirming space for queer and nonbinary people (everyone, really), so I try to reinforce that in my dress, since I'm big enough that I don't need to "dress" intimindating. I try to simultaneously look big enough that if someone is giving you trouble, I can definitely get them to leave the club without much incident, but also that it's easy to ask me for help if you need it.

Anyway.

One night I'm working and a dude rolls up that is, at a glance, the hardest motherfucker I've ever encountered in his life. Like, teardrops and MS-13 in four-inch letters on his neck kind of poo poo. And he walks up and stops and points at my shirt and says "Motherfucker, that poo poo is my childhood!" I'm wearing a shirt with the album art for Saves the Day's "Stay What You Are" on it.

Anyway that was the day I realized nothing ever makes sense.
