there's also talk of making european nuclear deterrence more of a franco-british responsibility

well britain would have to develop an actual independent nuclear deterrent in that case

together with merkel, he helped form the bizarrely dysfunctional EU response to the economic crisis and explicitly ceded france's leading role in the EU to germany

norway's bourgeois government is creaking alarmingly at the seams these days

it's a really strange constellation with the Conservatives and the right-populists being supported by the Christian Democrats and the Liberals in parliament. the latter two are now actively considering withdrawing their confidence in this government in the face of a national budget which basically spits in their face and a series of provocations & ultimatums by the right-populists

interestingly, the Progress Party has decided that they'd rather retain their base support than behave in a way not personally affronting to the people they work with and our minister of integration recently exacarbated the issue by going on a night raid with the police foreign section as they searched for and rounded up illegal immigrants for deportation, despite this not being a part of her portfolio at all

this, i think, is a misstep which risks making the norwegian right unable to govern for a decade, so it is potentially p. big - Progress Party's line running up to the previous election was that they refused to supply confidence to any government without them - it's going to be difficult to walk that back, and without them there is no realistic parliamentary majority available for the Conservatives unless Labour collapses dramatically

in my school's european history course we started out with an extremely shallow explanation of how the cro-magnons chased off the neanderthals, then made a huge jump towards the chaldeans before getting "serious" around the time of antiquity

norwegian history was pretty much "well people lived here and made some drawings on the rocks but we know hardly anything about them until tacitus decided to make a hugely irrational journey to the middle of nowhere, so we guess that several waves of migrants gradually displaced whoever was there before and we have given them names X and Y and Z and look the modern regions of norway are based on those names isn't that neat"

this is then followed by a major effort to make the viking ages really boring through looking at them from the perspective of social history - what did people's houses like, what did they eat, who did they sacrifice &c
