Heavy St. Mark symbolism going on. It's p. sweet. Hope this show doesn't go the way of that sweet sweet Carnivale.

Voiello is such a slimeball; that actor who plays him is doing a great job. The cinematography on this show is wonderful.

I'm finding it really hard to love this show for some reason. Jude Law is killing it, his character and his acting is the best part.

I'm not sure how many episodes the HBO run is at right now, but three episodes in I didn't even know if I liked the show or not and by the end it was my favorite show of the year.

I know it isn't that sort of show and they went out of their way to telegraph tease as such from early on, but I definitely want to see that kangaroo foil some assassins in the garden in a surreal brawl. I could easily take a spin off where it was that kind of show on top of it all... Such a great show. Quite enjoying the double episode pacing too---it'd be nice if this became a more common approach!

I didn't start to warm up to Lenny (and through him, the rest of the show) until about the fourth episode, when he teaches Esther to pray. He showed some real pastoral depth there. Bernardo I've liked from minute one. The scene in the second episode where he describes hearing the call, and then we see it again at the end of episode four. "But I will continue to protect the boy." Oh, so good.

This is probably the turning point for me as well. It's where it went from being weird and funny rear end in a top hat as Pope to being a guy that actually had some pretty complex depth beyond that and that only grew throughout the season.

This show has an almost Life Aquatic with Steve Zissou vibe to it at times. I love that I can't place Lenny in the good or evil category just yet.

What is it about the full papal regalia that makes a pope look like the most evil fucker ever? Being carried in on the shoulders of twelve was a nice touch. Also, I wonder how folks pay attention to anything going on in those rooms when you have so much fine art to look at.

Yeah I'm just watching that scene now and the power of his conviction just bleeds through the screen Jude law slayed it in that scene. Seems to me that Lenny is bound and determined to purify the church, at least in his mind, and comes across as completely unshakable in his determination to do so. I thought the conversation with the prostitute in the hotel contrasted so awesome with the speech to the Cardinals. It's almost like he's not sure God even exists but is absolutely certain about how to worship him. I could be way off on that but either way I'm definitely digging it and episode 5 was really, really good

I was kind of looking forward to the All Along the Watchtower opening (haven't cared for the song since , so liking TYP's intro surprised me), so changing it out really set up a sense of foreboding for me. Loved his speech to the cardinals...why do I feel like I'm rooting for the bad guy? I liked him disregarding his own tenet when he forgave homegirl unconditionally and got some instant-religious-gratification in the form of a nice breeze (and a bro-nod from Viello?). He talks Pope Trump but he acts Pope Bernie, really shocked he hasn't excommunicated anyone yet. Maybe holey-hands ( ) is first up? I can't wait for tomorrow's episode!

This latest episode was probably closest to Sorrentino's films in terms of style and mood which is definitely more wistful and contemplative than the show usually is, then it brings it right back around with loving LMFAO. This show isn't getting the attention it deserves.

Oh, episode five aired tonight? Good, then we can post this again somewhere other than the spoiler filled first page. https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=yFMDVH4lqSU I love that episode because when Lenny is with Dussolier it's one of the few times you start to see who he really is beyond the surface. You also get to see a little more in what kind of person Voiello really is beyond all the power grabbing stuff.

I liked how Viello would kiss the Pope's foot when he is getting called out in private but when it comes time to show obedience in front of the other Cardinals he almost balks until the Pope puts his other foot down.

If I can weigh in: The Consequences of Love and The Great Beauty, but if you like those enough you'll likely get something out of all of them. Il Divo is, I think, Sorrentino's best but won't be that easy to follow unless you know about Italy's experience in the latter half of the 20th century, which luckily is totally bizarre and fascinating, to the point where it's weird that it's not more common knowledge. Basically it entails violent political extremism, Cold War intrigue, Mafia war against the state, and ultimately the collapse of the entire Italian postwar political establishment in corruption investigations, all of which are interconnected. edit: I guess you've seen Il Divo already but it's worth sharing with everyone UNRULY_HOUSEGUEST fucked around with this message at 14:10 on Jan 31, 2017 |

The score in this is so good: the LMFAO from E5 was perfect (think I saw a headline: "I'm Sexy and I Pope It"), so add that to the list of songs I hated prior to this show which have now grown on me. gently caress! I almost forgot when he dropped the baby! "The Lort gifeth, an' t'Lort takef away..."

Episode 5 was amazing. The scene with Lenny just dismantling voiello was great. The way they angled the shot so he's towering over him just sells it so well. And the speech to the Cardinals was well worth the wait. I'm hoping more come-to-jesus moments are in store before this seasons out.
