Merry Christmas guys! And Happy Hanukkah and all the other holidays I'm surely forgetting.

This month we come together to celebrate games, sales, and that mythical sighting: the Last Guardian is being released. I think? I hope?

Talk about it all here, in the chat thread!

PS What game do you want most for Christmas this year?

I'm not looking forward to any of those games :(

But it's okay because I still have tons of Pokemon to play, and I've been working through late and postgame stuff in Tactics Ogre :)

X6 levels that are okay:
Blizzard Wolfang
Commander Yammark
Rainy Turtloid
Metal Shark Player

Three of the others aren't like, utterly miserable, but Blaze Heatnix's level is one of the worst in any video game, much less Mega Man. Also this kind of assumes none of the Nightmare mechanics are in play, which is the real problem with X6 imo

But realtalk ya boy Dynamo and his music are in X6 which is very good

Blaze Heatnix is probably the worst WORST level on X6. Like, first off you have to fight at stupid big rear end donut, like what four times? Then to top it off, you have to go through a slooooooow crawl up the platforms and there is the instan-death fire rising from below.

And then fight itself? Spoiler in case Looper wants to do it blind Even better when he's at low health is when he covers half the screen in instan death fire.

Only thing that stage going for it is the theme playing.

I've played X6 enough to actually kind of like it (because I prefer playing as Zero and it feels like levels were designed for him), but I'd rather cheat my way into the fortress levels by beating High Max than deal with that garbage

Eh, in Zelda getting new items means new abilities and changing how you interact with the environment. In Dark Souls everything is either a weapon or a key (or sometimes both) but your capabilities remain more or less static (depending on how you look at magic)

Metroid is hyper linear to a fault (without the sequence breaking discovered later) and the difficulty comes from learning patterns and whatnot. Symphony is much more open from the beginning (even moreso with the second castle) and the XP system means it's easy to just math your way past sections later if you find them too tough, and there's a huge weapon variety that changes your playstyle how you want. Metroid has the straight upgrade path which is easiest to design around. It's like minimalism vs maximalism. I love both models but they play very differently.

I don't think two design styles have to be identical for one to have obviously taken cues from another

No of course not, it's not an awful term. It just surprised me when I finally played the symphony style games earlier this year for the first time and they weren't really Metroid games in the style I was expecting. Like Ecclesia was the perfect game in that mold because they managed to combine the cool aspects of Symphony with the harder, stricter design of the classics. Love that game!

Oh, yeah I see what you're saying. Personally I try to think of Metroidvanias as just the Castlevania games post-SotN that incorporated Metroid elements (in contrast to Classicvanias) but I recognize most people use it much more broadly

I'm still disappointed with Twilight Princess giving us the Spinner, a tool that by all means should have been cool and fun, and then relegating it entirely to specific wall tracks and keyhole mechanisms. If you try to ride the Spinner anywhere else, you're not getting far.

Also the new Pokemon solved the lovely HM problem by removing HMs entirely.

The funny thing is it didn't remove them at all, it just separated them from your team's move list and made them feel better to use

Like, using a mudsdale to cross rocky terrain is about as contrived as cutting small bushes or climbing special walls when it crops up, but it doesn't matter because you get to ride a mudsdale

They're kinda standard 16 bit platformers. Most have large interconnected maps with dungeons and you unlock new abilities through either transformations or, in the third one, pirate gear. And yeah Wayforward is very upfront about loving the titty

One of the heads of Wayforward is also a key artist and I think he based Shantae on his wife, which is kind of cute
