Yeah; my dad is a liberal, and I'm pretty sure that if I wanted I could convince him that Trump (or some other prominent Republican) did some random horrible thing that I made up. I think a big part of it is that, on a social level, people enjoy the feeling of agreeing with others and dislike conflict, especially if they know them personally. It's more pleasant to say "wow really, that's great/awful!" than it is to say "hm are you sure that's actually true?"
