According to Wikipedia, the hammer + sickle (as well as the broken chains) has caused some discomfort (doesn't say among who... some politicians I guess) because of the communism associations, though most people (in Austria?) understand the meaning.

It's the same meanings as the communist symbols - sickle is agriculture and hammer is industry - but both features originate with the first Austrian republic of 1919 and aren't consciously socialist.

National emblem of the Bahamas. Conch shell represents the islands' marine life. The ship on the shield is reportedly the Santa Maria, Columbus' ship. The marlin and the flamingo are the national animals of the Bahamas (on the sea and the land of the islands). The bright colours apparently reflect the Bahamas' bright future (and are rumoured to persist because of their appeal to tourists). The coat of arms was personally approved by Elizabeth II in 1971 for use.

edit: drat, that Thailand crest is cool as hell. I also like transnistria's but I'm a sucker for socialist emblems.
