The big box that is hosed the most is probably Sears.

quote:

Sears reported Thursday that revenue fell 12.5% to $5 billion in the third quarter, with losses widening to $748 million from $454 million in the period one year ago.

Same-store sales dropped 7.4%, including a 10% decrease at Sears stores and a 4.4% decrease at Kmart stores.

It has 1,687 stores compared to 3,510 five years ago with more closures to come.

The Limited: Closed all of it's 250 stores.

Macy's: Closing 68 stores this year and ultimately 100 stores over the next couple of years.

Sears: Closing 108 Kmart stores and 42 Sears stores by April. Bankruptcy predictions flying around like buzzers.

Wet Seal: Closing all 171 of its stores.

BCBG: Closing 120 stores, primarily in the U.S. Out of 175 US-based stores.

Bebe: Closing 25 stores. Which doesn't seem that bad?

Payless: Could close as many as 1,000 stores as part of a debt restructuring plan.

Sears has finally said what we all know.

quote:

Retailer Sears Holdings, which has struggled with years of losses and declining sales, warned on Tuesday about its ability to continue as a going concern.

"Our historical operating results indicate substantial doubt exists related to the company's ability to continue as a going concern," Sears said in the annual report for the fiscal year ended Jan. 28.

Once the largest U.S. retailer, Sears has spun off some of its stores into a real estate investment trust, put some brands on sale and repeatedly raised debt from billionaire Chief Executive Edward Lampert's hedge fund to cope with the slump.

The company said last month it would cut costs by $1 billion and reduce debt and pension obligations by at least $1.5 billion this year.

Sears said on Tuesday actions taken during the year to boost liquidity, including the sale of the Craftsman tool brand to power tool maker Stanley Black & Decker in a $900 million deal, could mitigate the going concern doubt and satisfy its capital needs for the current fiscal year.

However, the company said it could not predict with certainty the outcome of its actions to generate liquidity.

Sears, which had total borrowings of $4.16 billion as of Jan. 28, said it would continue to explore ways to unlock value across a range of assets.

Its kind of funny, when I started this thread, I was more focusing on Big Box retail as being an unstoppable force steamrolling (literally) across the American landscape. But most of the posting seems to be about retail failures. There are still big box/little box stores that are doing well, right? Like Walgreens still seem to be sprouting up like mushrooms.
I'm unaware of any. As the Big Box retailers fall they'll take malls they anchor and the smaller retailers inside with them. One third of the malls in America are projected to go under. They did crush small mom and pop stores, but now are being crushed in turn by online retail and a fall in spending on apparel and accessories.

edit: After reading some more. Family Dollar, Dollar General, Dollar Tree, TJ Maxx, and Walmart are doing well.

The picture for debt is equally muddy. Bank of America is unusual in that it discloses its exposure to retailing: about $50bn, equivalent to more than a quarter of its core capital. No comprehensive tally of retailing-property debt exists. According to Morgan Stanley, most loans last year came from regional banks, commercial mortgage-backed securities (bonds backed by cash flows from commercial property), national banks and insurers. The Economist’s examination of data from Bloomberg, the Mortgage Bankers Association and TreppAnalytics, a firm which tracks commercial mortgage-backed securities, suggests that the combined debt of retailing companies and retailing property is roughly $1trn. However the market’s opacity means that the impact of any losses is hard to predict.

One hand I'm sure everyone can see how brick and mortar is in decline and not in "housing will never fall" mind set that led to a crisis and recession.

On other hand we have no way to predict the losses on a financial sector holding $1 trillion debt in a declining sector.

A mean the difference is there's collateral right? A home falling under it's mortgage value meant banks were taking losses. That shouldn't play out if say Sears goes under since it's stores and assets can cover it's debts?
