Here's a run down of Cannabis legalisation stances of five of the parties standing for election in the UK today. http://www.mirror.co.uk/news/politics/legalising-cannabis-lib-dem-tory-10486459

I wouldn't get excited about the Lib Dems, they have nine seats and made no moves on legalisation when in a coalition government. The Greens are even smaller and have dropped references to legalisation in their manifesto.

I want to protest an ill thought out bill,
that is passing through parliament here on the hill,
The bill that is bad is called C-45,
It has so many flaws it just shouldn't survive,
The Grits will allow four pot plants in each dwelling,
Regardless of how bad each place will be smelling,
With mold, ventilation as issues unplanned,
This bill will not keep pot from our children's hand,
There are more new infractions within this new rule,
That our courts will be flooded as will every school,
With drug impaired driving and challenges there,
The doubling of traffic deaths and Liberals don't care,
The provinces and police in every town,
Have all asked the Liberals to slow this bill down,
With nearly 200 more days left til the day,
Nobody but our party stands in the way,
We hope that the senate will do its true deed,
And keep our great country safe from all the weed.

Months ago I saw that the NHS had begun trialling CBD Oil for epilepsy and got curious for more details. I haven't found much concrete info and what I found is somewhat confusing, the first page of search engine results gave me plenty of buying options on eBay though which I found surprising.

Anyway I did find some information on the first legal Medical cannabis product in the UK Sativex. http://www.independent.co.uk/life-style/health-and-families/legal-marijuana-medical-uk-availability-law-a7699056.html Its been legal for seven (eight from today I guess) years buuuut its very expensive and concerns over effectiveness vs price mean its not available on the NHS which would explain its very low profile. Its actually been a rough few years for the NHS, constant budget restrictions and spiralling costs from bungled public-private partnerships have meant its become incredibly conservative and has been lagging behind many other healthcare systems in experimental new procedures and adopted alternative treatment methods.

Other than that its rather unclear the big pro Cannabis groups keep reporting they're on the verge of getting medical passed, but honestly I'm sceptical. Two interesting bits though, the Royal College of General Practitioners Council approved a proposal by CLEAR to publish guidelines for medical cannabis use which is a pretty big step for a society of that standing to take given the legal standing of Cannabis currently. https://www.clear-uk.org/probably-the-biggest-breakthrough-yet-for-medicinal-cannabis-in-the-uk/

And a group of terminally ill cancer patients arrested for growing Cannabis were given suspended sentences on compassionate grounds https://medicalmarijuana.co.uk/cancer-patient-freed-judge-caught-growing-medical-cannabis/

This may be a one off by a fringe judge, but it may establish a precedent for similar cases to build defences on.

The UK government has given out its first license allowing a person to import THC oil for medicinal use through customs. https://www.bbc.co.uk/news/uk-england-coventry-warwickshire-44788448 hopefully now the precedents been set this'll lead to an increase in access since the NHS probably won't be in a position to expand its own cannabis based treatments for awhile.

UK law (well I don't kniw if Northern Ireland is included) has been changed to expand medicinal Cannabis availability.

Here's the most thorough news on whats been changed https://www.standard.co.uk/news/health/medical-cannabis-legalised-uk-cbd-laws-a3976836.html

An acquantice of mine has been saying the Prosecution Service has also admitted to a loophole where people who qualify for medicinal can grow up to 9 plants but I've not seen any confirmation on that one.

Not legalisation per se, but I think this https://www.ktnv.com/news/nevada-becomes-first-state-to-ban-pre-employment-marijuana-tests

"AB 132, signed by Governor Steve Sisolak, makes it unlawful for any Nevada employer to fail or refuse to hire someone if they test positive for marijuana."

I think demonstrates the growing mellowing out of attitudes towards the devils lettuce.

Walked into my local chemists for a flu jab,saw a stall full of new CBD oil products. Bit of a surprise to see it out in the open given how glacially slow medical cannabis alternatives have been rolled out here.

My dad has severe back problems and often can't sleep in a bed because of it, we were thinking of getting him some to try for pain relief but they won't sell it to anyone already on any other type of medication. Is that a legitimate concern or just a relic of the climate of fear over cannabis?

From what I understand a lot of those products are going to be incredibly overpriced and/or very low dose. You're more likely to find better stuff at a legal dispensary. Or make friends with old hippie ladies. I would suggest edibles and or topical cream if you can buy it or make it. I hope your dad gets something that works, that sucks.

Thanks but I don't live in North America, its this or nothing, I think I might try getting some to help with sleeping which I do actually need and just getting him to try that to see if it has any effect.

I've been keeping an eye on the New Zealand referendums held during the Election vote. There were two votes (both non-binding) on legalising euthanasia and recreational cannabis. The euthanasia vote passed but sadly the cannabis vote was narrowly defeated.

https://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/2020_New_Zealand_cannabis_referendum

Its non binding and the PM said she voted to legalise it in the referendum so that's some progress at least.

Bit surprised to see decrim of other scarier substances is at least being seriously considered in a couple of states and DC so soon.

That's a really great and informative post Fuct, thank you. I remember being surprised seeing those expensive little CBD oil vials in my local chemists, there's been very little official information out there and this may be very useful for myself and some friends of mine. I'll pass it on.

Good, I also see that it was finally made legal to own grow and use in Mexico with sales being the sole prohibition left.

Small steps.

a podcast for cats posted:

Malta just legalised recreational cannabis about an hour ago. Law has to be signed by the president to come into force, but that's usually a formality.

The Pres has indeed signed it. I was curious to see that sale was still illegal but the law does allow distribution via non-profit cannabis clubs.

Which is interesting, its good that there's a legal space for sharing but that seems like a deliberate breeding ground for an illicit marlet to thrive and usually one of the strongest arguments on favour of legalisation is that it weakens organised crime revenue.

Some Dutch friends were lamenting how American states now have better cannabis laws then Netherlands which for decades was the hippy friendly weed capital.

They shared a map on legal countries and I was surprised to see Thailand in the legal rec category. Turns out they moved that way this year and even released prisoners still serving terms for decriminalised sentences. A rare smart move from that Autocratic regime.

Surprised that hadn't been bigger news with it being a major hub for tourism and the sleazier kinds of tourist.

So far the legalisation in Germany hasn't made much of an impact over here. Currently the Maltese still social clubs aren't legal until July, maybe that will increase visibility and strengthen pressure. But then again the Portuguese decrim model has recieved universal praise for tackling drug social issues and that stubbornly hasn't moved the needle. Well Scotland pushed for it but cave in pretty quickly when the UK gov said it wouldn't co-operate so that might have been an attempt to inflame indepence sentiment. I hope not since Scotland and other parts really need to do something to change the way we deal with drugs. So, does Ireland North and South.
