Illinois. Its a Dem stronghold but its the kind of Dems that Reps like to point to when they try to claim they're all corrupt as gently caress. (Of course the Reps here are corrupt as gently caress too there's just fewer of them in statewide office so they don't make as many headlines due to attrition).

A quick note regarding the Kentucky Democratic Party:

Likewise from Louisville. I've been involved in January of this year and went to the state convention in June.

Metro Dems is the biggest club in Louisville, which isn't saying a ton as many have closed in recent years. Usually has a good 30+ person turnout, and we have about 120 members who are dues-paying ($30/year) and have attended at least one meeting in the last year. As Zbean Madowinty mentioned, there's a potluck on Wednesday. Here's the newsletter. http://eepurl.com/csgyRX A lot of people on the county executive committee and the state central executive committee are members and officers of Metro Dems. I got elected to the board at the last meeting, so if you are coming, shoot me at email at my username @gmail.com, and we can connect.

The state party is a complete disaster. The Jefferson County party is actually rebuilding. The county party treasurer, who is also the state vice-chair, just got fired last week by the county party chair. A lot of division between Louisville and KDP right now, which is a good thing and means Jefferson is improving. But people like Longmeyer thrived in county and state Democratic party politics for so long for a reason, and it's a struggle.

Sadly part of my willingness is due to the recent election result. I probably wouldn't care much about politics otherwise.

Spent a couple hours today making phone calls for a runoff election in my area. Man, I'm enthused about volunteering but that is some boring rear end poo poo. Gotta give my respect to anyone who does that all day for multiple days during election season.

So looking up your county, you've got a Dallas County Young Democrats meeting on Tuesday @ 6:30 at 3903 Cedar Springs Rd. If you wanna start getting connected sooner rather than later, that's a good meeting to go to. Most goons here probably fall under the category of "Young Democrat", which is typically "40 or under". You've got a fuckload of clubs to join in your area, though it looks like the county party itself isn't terribly open, every meeting on their calendar has been cancelled.

Don't feel bad about that, I'm sure the majority of us only started giving a poo poo once we realized we got shellacked. Looking at your county party's website, they meet every 2nd Monday, so your next meeting is actually tomorrow @ 6:00 PM at Albany County Public Library, 310 S 8th St, Laramie WY. If you're not busy, you should drop by and see how active the party is. If they're as small as the photos imply you should have no issue becoming important just by showing up.

EDIT: Also a couple of your state representatives are part of your county party so that's even cooler!

I'm in the process of moving out of Austin, TX so I'm not really in a position to go to any meetings right now, but I plan on getting active when I move to Seattle in January. There's a special election in a lean R district in the Seattle suburbs and if the Dems can win it they'll have full control of the Washington state government, so I'm hoping to do some work to help win that seat.

This thread has been super :unsmith: to read right now, watching people make a change in their local parties. The upside of no one caring about local politics in America is that it doesn't take too much to make change happen on a local level if you can organize and get new people on board.

I'm going to try and make that DSA meeting though, but the most difficult part will be convincing my wife I'm not just trying to get out of spending time with them considering I've never been active with politics before.

This is not the way to get involved in the actual party stuff. Go to meetings and email and call people to find out what is happening and how to make your voice heard

If you just want to be free labour thats fine to but you should still get to know people so you end up doing free labour for the right person anyway so still also do the other stuff

This is also a weird time to get involved. November was election month, which means reorganization is next. Those meetings are really for the local groups to choose new leadership, and often you have to be elected to whatever your State's version of Precinct Committee/Ward Captain, is.
December is holiday season, some places just cancel their meeting. I've been talking to people who are really involved at the local level and even they don't know when their December meeting is.

January... That's the month we need to be shooting for. The holidays are over, time to get back into the routine.

Travis County Goons: here's your events happening this week. Sorry I posted this late and ended up missing a Forum this morning at 11:45 AM.
Mon, Dec 12 @ 6:00pm at Scholz Garten, 1607 San Jacinto Blvd. Liberal Austin Democrats are having a membership party and holding elections. Dunno if this is an open event, might want to call ahead and find out.
Tue, Dec 13 @ 6:30pm at Wright Bros. Brew and Brew, 500 San Marcos St #105. Austin Young Democrats are holding their monthly meeting.
Wed, Dec 14 @ 5:30pm at El Gallo Restaurant, 2910 S Congress Ave. South Austin Democrats and Austin Tejano Democrats are having a party. Again, call ahead to find out about it.
Wed, Dec 14 @ 6:30pm at 3418 N Lamar Blvd. Stonewall Democrats of Austin are having a happy hour/business meeting.
Thu, Dec 15 @ 6:00pm at 4717 Heflin Ln. Black Austin Democrats are holding their monthly meeting.

Williamson County Goons: There's only one event happening the rest of this month, which is the WCDP Holiday Party on Thu, Dec 15 @ 6:30pm at 445 E Morrow St, Georgetown. $25 door fee, might be worth going to. I'm going, hopefully I'll meet more Wilco goons there?

There's also runoffs happening tomorrow, so if you can get to your district's voting station you should. I don't know enough about any of the elections to say one way or the other, but here's the party endorsements if that means anything to you: WCDP & TCDP are endorsing Sean Hassan for ACC Place 4, and a bunch of clubs are also endorsing Julie Nitsch for ACC Place 9. TCDP is also endorsing Alison Alter for Austin City Council District 10.

Got an email from the local young dems organizer in the KY, lol at the ineptitude:

quote:

Do NOT look at the county party website. That is woefully inaccurate and hasn't been updated in years. Pretty much nothing about the website is right. The party does not even currently have control of it. Yes, you read that correctly. The good news: I recently became Communications Chair, and we are launching a new website. This major accomplishment involved a lot more drama than I would like to publicly share, but is possibly the biggest victory for the YDs in Louisville since we began.
