I'm going a little crazy not being able to go to any meetings or poo poo this month, I want to be out there doing poo poo.

Unfortunately, I really gotta to some actual work right now, so if one of you guys can put together the info for someone from Alpine County, CA it would be super appreciated.

I've been to some meetings and did some volunteer work for the runoffs, but I feel like there's gotta be something more I can do. The next meeting for any of the Wilco clubs/parties isn't for nearly 3 weeks, so I've suddenly gone from going to several meetings a week to crickets.

Regarding the Alpine County Democrats, it looks like their website no longer exists, unfortunately. The California Dems site has their phone # listed as (530) 694-9691 and email as kylescabin@gmail.com. Their facebook page had a post saying they were meeting on Nov 15th, so if they're anything like here that would presumably mean "third tuesday", which would be in 4 days. I'm gonna send an email to that address and see if I can get anything for you, but the person looking might need to send them a message on facebook (I don't actually have a facebook account, so...).

I'll try the Facebook, thanks.

I've been thinking that what I should do, personally, is join some sort of group or platform where I can do... writing, I guess? Get the word out, start helping organize and energize beyond the confines of a dead gay comedy forum, maybe start working on some local social good programs like soup kitchens and stuff if I can find a way to make that politically relevant.

Probably the best thing we can be doing in the short term is calling Dem party members and getting them to support Ellison, cutting the legs off of Perez's run early. Everything we're doing in this thread is for naught if we can't get a DNC chair that recognizes the value of building strong local grassroots support for the party.

No even under Dean, I would say he wasn't that powerful. As much as liked the 50 state plan, his DNC never actually implemented it.

The DNC chair is important, but to me, I'm far more worried about this being a nasty DNC fight rather than who actually wins.

Democrats don't have the time or power to spare on infighting and bickering. Like if we have people later saying "yeah but you supported ____ for DNC chair" as an insult we're hosed.

plus perez's race baiting bernie as the "white candidate" left a bitter taste in a lot of mouths here

the democratic leadership has spent roughly 30 years burying any progressive policy while pushing a largely right-wing economic model, even if this is purely symbolic the electorate just abstaining to vote for this election should at least be a wakeup call for congress dems for where the wind is blowing

The problem with Perez isn't his ideology, it's his experience. The DNC needs to completely rethink the way it supports local parties and builds grassroots support, which is something Ellison is running on and Perez has no experience with. Perez's entire campaign is just him taking Ellison's ideas and hastily saying "me too", which says to me that he has no real ideas or plans moving forward and is just running because the Obama camp wants someone from their circle in charge instead of an outsider. There's nothing that Perez brings to the table that isn't being offered already by Ellison in a more competent and energizing way.

You've said your pieces, I think this is a good place to drop it. If you want to have a more in depth discussion about it, see the Dem Thread. You both seem to agree supporting Ellison is the right course of action, even if you're reasons differ - try to stay results oriented and not end up quibbling over motivations.

These should be the contacts for the DNC officials. If it's not the person on the list, ask to speak with them and if you can't, pass a message. Then ask them if they are supporting Ellison, and if they aren't already ask them to do it.

If you want to suggest people do things to support Perez, that is okay. Go ahead. If you want to make a (preferably single) post about why Perez is good and people should support him, that's mostly fine too. Getting into an extended back and forth over which one of them is better is not - we have a thread for that. Refine your arguments there, condense them to a single post, and add your call to action here if you feel you must.

But don't argue over stupid bullshit, and note that you are not the only one I quoted in that response. Provide the information you think is best and useful, provide more if people request, and then stop instead of risking drowning out more relevant information.

From the OP:

quote:

If you disagree with someone, that's fine, but try to remember the point is to convince people they want to be involved, not to drive them out, so stay specific and don't draw it out.

If you're not posting as part of an attempt to get people more involved and getting them to act, don't post. At least not here.

I would say something like this:

"Hello [BLANK]. My name is OhFunny and I'm calling today to ask you support Kieth Ellison as DNC Chairman. I feel very strongly that Representative Ellison is the best choice to lead the DNC going forward, due his experience in organizing and winning grassroots campaigns in Minnesota; and that his strong support for American workers exactly the message the Democratic Party needs to adapt going forward to appeal to those voters who feel frustrated; and left behind as income inequality rises across this country."

Had a good talk with the chair of the Arizona Party. Her priority is 50 state strategy. She's receptive to Keith Ellison and says she's talked to him one on one. Her real issue is finding out what that actually translates to in reality. What is Keith Ellison's actual plan.

The other 3 electors for AZ have already been chosen, they have 4 year terms. I'll try to get in on that next time if possible.

I've put my name in as interested in first Vice chair.

Does anyone have any ideas on inexpensive or free options for online meeting spaces. Stuff like WebEx or Google Hangouts? I'd like to have a few options try them out and see if they're suitable for larger scales. I'd like to make it easier for people who live in the outskirts or are disabled to participate in democratic meetings, even if it means just setting up phone conferences or something.

Skype, GoToMeeting, Facebook, Discord.

I'd definitely allow for both a software and phone-based call in method. I think the both Skype and GoToMeeting allow phones to call in to as well as software, so I'd suggest those.

I'm really interested in hearing ideas for policies/proposal/ballot initiatives that people want to see/try and pass or collect petition signatures for.

Edit: Campaigning on a city level to raise minimum wage seems like a great way to build a voter base that cares about economic issues, and if you canvass and phonebank you could turn out whole bloc's of voters that normally would never show up to the polls, because they just don't care about politics, or see both parties as the same, because they'd have an issue they wanted to vote on, and while they're there, there (hopefully) gonna vote for the economic progressives on the ballot for house rep/senate/governor/etc.

Locally the only thing that seems to work to get infrastructure bills passed in my town is if they do it through the issue of municipal bonds. Dunno if people just like the idea of kicking it down the curb as far as payment, but if you wanna maybe be dirty about it and not wanna say, raise taxes as a means of paying for something, this is what works here.

I've always seen marijuana legalization as a no-brainer way to get young progressives or apathetic but generally left leaning folks excited about voting, but maybe that's an oversimplification. Passes a gut instinct test for me, at the very least. Can even frame it similar to Colorado - good for schools / infrastructure / whatever common sense good thing funding.
