Massachussets residents:

My local party group has recommended getting involved in the Progressive Mass movement.

That seems like a pretty good idea to me, but I don't know much about them. Is anyone familiar with them?

They are apparently growing quite quickly but still need help setting up new chapters and stuff.

At the very least these "legislative scorecards" seem pretty cool.

Also have a local meeting on the 12th for the town DTC.

Maynard DTC will meet Trustees Room in the Maynard Library. We welcome and will be voting in new members. Also, Marilyn Deveney from the MA Governors' Council, will be speaking about the role of the Council. Next steps for 2017 will be discussed as well.

Gonna be a busy week of learning how the heck all this stuff works.

Does anyone else have anything coming up next month?

How do I get a membership card for the DSA? I want more cool swag. I also want to make one of my NYRs advocating more for socialism and left wing policies, and I'm hoping getting more involved in the DSA would be good for that. I just want my work to not be pointless...not like typical (Young-)Democrat meetings 'n poo poo where nothing actually happens.

Happy new years, everyone! Hopefully you've all recovered from your holiday-induced food comas. I'm not gonna bother putting up meeting dates for my counties since their websites (mostly) don't suck and actually have meeting times on them. Reminder to the goon that went to meetings after reading my posts that there's a Wilco Young Dems meeting on the 5th at Third Base on 183, which is a pretty informal meeting where you can get drunk and talk politics. Also, you still haven't posted yet, but hopefully you're still looking into being a precinct chair.

I've been looking into what groups other than the Democrat party exist in the area, and it seems like they're it. The Austin, TX branch of the DSA seems disorganized at best or nonexistent at worst - their website doesn't list meetings, nor does their Facebook page, and comments on the Facebook page make it look like there's only 6 of them total. It might be worth getting in contact with them just to try to see if there's anything I can do to help, but it feels like something of a dead end in terms of tangible near-future activism. Aside from that, I think the Democrat party is the only left-leaning group here.

If anyone's in WIlliamson/Travis county and wants to be a precinct chair or run for an officer position in the party, those meetings are being held this month.
Williamson County is holding a Candidate Recruitment meeting on Jan 11 @ 7:00PM at 1915 S Austin Ave. Suite 102, Gerogetown. I think you have to declare your candidacy at or before this meeting to be considered.
Travis County, I'm not actually sure. The county party has no meetings on the calendar, so I don't know if they conduct their business at the same place as one of their local clubs. If you're interested in running for an officer position or precinct chair you're SOL if the slot is full, candidacy needed to be declared before Dec 13th, but if you want to fill an empty slot I'd suggest calling them at (512) 477-7500 and getting info on their appointment process. Travis seems more insular than Wilco, probably due to it being a far more blue county and so they don't have to fight tooth and claw, but they still seem pretty open to newcomers.

As far as getting a DSA card is concerned, my email when I donated told me that I should get one within 2-6 weeks, but I suspect that it's closer to 6 since so many people are joining now.

South Florida goons--monthly DEC meeting for Palm Beach County will be this thursday (the 5th) from 7-9 PM at the South County Civic Center on Jog Rd.

Also, the FDP chair election is on the 14th in Orlando, but on the 11th the candidates will be speaking down here:
FDP Chair Candidate Forum Wednesday, January 11, 6 PM to 8 PM
Event is taking place at CWA Local 3104's union hall, located at 3121 W McNab Rd, Pompano Beach, Florida 33069. Every four years, Florida Democrats elect a new Chair to lead the party. All declared candidates have been invited to speak and answer questions: Stephen Bittel, Dwight Bullard, Leah Carius, Alan Clendenin, and Lisa King.

I have no idea who any of these people are or if any of them are not clueless fucksticks. So if you have an issue you want to ask about from the future head of the Florida party, now would be an opportune time.

Edit: On re-read, they're all invited, but no idea if they'll all come.

I posted this a few weeks ago and got slagged because it didn't have any sections on how to primary neoliberals. Really glad to see that this strategy is already paying dividends though.

It would be really cool if there was a guide on how to successfully primary incumbents, but I think that most people forget that the Tea Party's power was mostly psychological; they weren't that successful when it came to primarying incumbents but they were able to successfully project the appearance that they could using these techniques.

Just got back from the Austin Capital Area Progressive Democrats (CAPD) first meeting of the new year. There were about 20 in attendance with 6-7 first-time participants like me. Interesting age distributions between fresh college grads to an 86 year old; also lots of lawyers and architects that seemed very angry at housing. Housing seems to be their theme and they're using it as a point of intersectionality which I like since Austin's housing problem is responsible for a lot of its failures.

They seem to realize that there's an opportunity for exponential growth of a real left in Austin, but they seem unsure of how to do that in large part because of technical incompetence. They do seem open to overhauling their online presence and using agitprop to turn disaffected Austinites into political activists.

I'll be going to the DSA meeting later this month as well. I think it'll be interesting to get a survey of how different groups operate.

If anyone else in Austin wants to sync up for politics or beers let me know.

I'm planning on going to my first town council meeting next Monday to support the reuse of a shut down school to house other organizations needing more space and a ADA compliant building. The Republican controlled board of finance is apparently the only group that would rather just see the property sold and turned into a Walmart or something.

My DTC meetings occur every third Monday but they have been courteous enough to send out an email asking if people are fine with meeting on a public holiday. I posted about the first meeting in the dem thread but my one problem is 1) I've been only in town a few months and it's been a pain trying to play catchup on decades of tiffs and issues 2) I have no idea what I am doing. On the plus side one of the council members was my high school teacher so I have an actual relationship there.

Well, I stand corrected on the oversight issue and I'm happy about it.

If any of you are tepid about getting involved in party politics (and I don't blame you if you are), look for local groups focused on an issue. One issue that you should really care about if you're in a big city is affordability, so look for tenant organizations and see how you can get involved. The Crown Heights Tenants Union in Brooklyn is one example, and within the same city there's also the Ridgewood Tenants Union and the Flatbush Tenants Coalition. CHTU meets every third Thursday of each month, the location varies but it's usually at a hospital on Classon Ave. If you're visiting and want to get inspired to start your own tenants organization, feel free to drop in. I'm booked for the next four meetings due to classes but it's definitely worth going to.

Don't worry about me, my friend. I knew full well what I was signing up for.

Just a little tidbit for non New-England goons: The local governments here are at the individual town/city level instead of a county level government. County lines are apparently mostly used to divide up judicial systems or for census data. CT is apparently super weird, though:

quote:

Connecticut contains 169 incorporated towns. Put into terms that are equivalent to the other New England states, 20 are cities/boroughs and 149 are towns. (As discussed in the Cities section of Other types of municipalities in New England above, the relationship between towns and cities in Connecticut is different from the other New England states, at least on paper; thus, in the technical sense, all 169 of the above municipalities are really towns, with 20 overlaid by a coextensive city or borough of the same name.)[16]

In general, most of us just try not to think about it :psyduck:
