based on what i know (and was able to google) new zealand is equally terrible to its minorities and natives, and its lgbt rights are about on par with the US's (just added gay marraige this decade, civil unions before that, has left trans rights undefined and in legal limbo with differing opinions in various courts).

it seems like the primary advantage of new zealand is actually that it treats its lower-class white people better than the us and that's not a consideration if you are making the big bux.

If it's to the US they'd likely be put somewhere else while the visa is pending. E.g. the Dublin office or London office (for now lol) for EU residents. This limbo period can easily take a year depending on the type of application they can get with their credentials.

This is much less of a problem for countries with functioning governments tho

This is what keeps me from even bothering to apply, despite my fiance working there and some of our friends. I'd only wanna work on very specific projects on their cloud or maps team, but even within those groups there are plenty of really boring projects.

It doesn't strike me as a place where someone can come in start making interesting and creative decisions. Maybe that's for the best, but its something I really enjoy about smaller companies, once you've proven yourself you can really have a say in the direction of the company's technology even if you only have maybe 2-5 years of experience.

they've long suffered from having way more people than work to be done, so there's tons of teams whose sole purpose is to keep rewriting the same miniscule internal service over and over for eternity, along with the requisite horse trading to retain said projects so that the teams still have some semblance of a reason to exist

From: some idiot
To: My manager
Subject: VYO69 in Jeans?
Body: Is today casual day?

They weren't real surprised when I left, despite getting an A+ perf review

i parked a nissan versa next to someones vw eos. they'd regularly parked it away from the rest of the cars in the office parking lot and i thought it was funny to have my shitbox parked next to the (somewhat) nicer cars. apparently the vw eos owner was offended and figured out who my manager was, then whined at them about my transgression

to their credit my manager was all 'lol you wont believe what this piece of poo poo just said to me'

hope the offer hadnt been sent today XD

Many things about cities are very counter intuitive. For example it seems like making bigger roads, or flyovers, or elevated highways will solve traffic jams. And clearly that has never been the case. Because what creates traffic is not the number of cars, but the number of trips and the length of trips. They'll need more road infrastructure and the traffic will become even worse. The only way to solve traffic jams is to restrict car use, and the most obvious way of restricting car use is restricting parking.

Our bizarre promotion process has the following features

1) I apply for promotion with a self eval and peer feedback
2) A committee decides on it
3) They give that decision to my manager, who can choose whether or not to appeal it
4) Two weeks pass while my manager is not allowed to tell me what the current status is
5) Once possible appeals are done then I hear the final news

This basically forces us into this awkward situation where I have to communicate that, should I happen to need an appeal, here are some things that I think happen to support my case that weren't in my initial self assessment, but maybe I don't need an appeal...
