Part of the issue is that the true center of politics would be social democracy. It is in fact a compromise between socialism and capitalism. "Centrism" as it has been advertised and executed in western countries is quite far to the right of that. "Centrists" have been stomping on unions, outsourcing industries, deregulating the financial sector... and in return what does the left get?
