How do the active items recharge? Picked up the game due to enjoying the first videos, I'm quite bad though - usually die to the first boss, occasionally die to the 2nd floor.

I was wondering if you could just cheat everything with the Shield/Turtle combo until you showed you can't hide under the shield forever. Any reason not to be using those munchers? Seemed like you have more guns than you need by then.
