Hmm... I wonder why the file is named "what2.exe"...?

EDIT: Oh god drat it, I uploaded the previous build instead of the current one. That'll teach me not to name the files separately next time...
The public build works like a charm, but the judge build won't activate a menu button you need to click to continue at a certain point because I put a 1 where I should have put a 0.

I'm on my game page punching myself in the face and yelling "resubmit" at the screen but nothing's working

Gently herd the cats to the exit by shooing them in the correct direction. Cats will move away from you when you shoo them. You can also pick up cats and throw them. Excessive application of cat-herding skills may stress out the poor little cats and make them panic. Panicking cats are hard to manage and spread panic to nearby cats. Time is limited, so hurry up before the time-over ghost eats you.

Ok, I guess I'm going to look at the twitter gifs and get that out of the way first. I'll post a few of my favourite ones I did in my search (my twitter search was "#awfuljams OR @awfuljams since:2017-01-02 until:2017-01-16" if you posted a gif during the jam but it wasn't on twitter with either the awfuljams hashtag or at then I'm not counting it sorry) before choosing three of the winners. There were also a lot of gifs of stuff that weren't breaking, which is fine but the ones I liked are going to be more weighted on ones that did have things breaking.

First of all is this one. This has some nice bit of the old "unexpected behaviour" happening here. There's too many cats! Solid, but it seems as though that's all there is.

https://twitter.com/JCatrambone/status/818292250371231744

This one by Hitlersaurus is pretty funny but I think it's mainly due to the fact that it's a huge hodgepodge of assets moving about on screen rather than anything actually breaking.

https://twitter.com/GayAnimeDad/status/817387029147353088

Mo_Steel had some nice ones, this one where an asset falls through the ground is pretty funny

https://twitter.com/Mo_Steel/status/816417101061718017

which then got topped by this one where the camels decide to go all over the place

https://twitter.com/Mo_Steel/status/817171761078923265

My favourite ones came from Entrance Jew though. There was this one where everything seems to be glitching and all over the place:

https://twitter.com/EntranceJew/status/819947338307346433

But my favourite gif is this slow burn where everything seems normal up until the blocks hit and then a bit after MORE BLOCKS HIT:

https://twitter.com/EntranceJew/status/816759844891987969

So I guess the winners are EntranceJew (for the "wait for it" gif), Mo_Steel (for the bouncy camels), and Jo (for the waterfall of cats). Add me on steam so I can send a copy of Candice Debebe's Incredibly Trick Lifestyle to you all http://steamcommunity.com/id/afal/. Congrats!

I'm disappointed my game never hit completion so I may pass the prize along to another user; in retrospect while I liked the concept (basically was going to be a game where you try to either scare buffalo into jumping off a cliff [something that actually apparently happened in America!] or you have to dodge panicking buffalo) I didn't have the time needed to learn ClickTeam Fusion or GameMaker to adequately complete the game between studying for a certification exam, work, and spending a ton of time watching AGDQ. The most important thing is that you nailed the simple gameplay idea that requires just one button to play but still offers satisfying interactivity. If you gave people some progression goals to grow their towers higher and higher it could be a pretty addicting title.

Let's Clock Into The Sunset Together

:siren: Reviews: :siren:

ARACHNAFOE - The game mechanic of the power up XP things being pushed away by firing actually adds quite a good bit of depth to the gameplay, forcing you to take risks and building tension to try and gather them up safely. I like it a lot! Also gently caress spiders!

DDAFPST Ostriches - Unskippable cutscene :argh: I ,like the voice acting at least, the concept is entertaining, and once I figured out what made me lose I was able to easily trash the AI. I imagine multip-layer could be chaotic.

Delenda Airlines - Reminds me of "Cook, Serve, Delicious" in a good way; I enjoy the humor (complimentary turbulence). Gameplay felt a little clunky (hard to click on people specifically or sometimes to tell who wants what) and I never got to day 2. Very good panic inducing simulator.

Yo! Let's Up - Honestly one of the most impressive games I've played in any game jam made with Stencyl. The art is simple and adorable, the music is a perfect upbeat, fantastic little time waster. I agree with others that you could easily build in a sense of progression, some all-time / weekly / daily leaderboards, microtransaction hats, some unique event levels / races (low grav, double blocks, etc.) and really have something cool here. One minor gripe: I seem to die a lot on the corners of blocks, seems touchy about not landing on your feet. Otherwise, stellar showing for just two weeks.

BOSS 900 - I won? Interesting concept as a work day simulator, bit hard to tell what's working versus not. Maybe I should work my employee more than 8 hours to increase the challenge.

Fire in Building 13 - Probably best to let this place burn down and then don't rebuild anything. :stonk: Fun little game, the tight perspective scale gives a good bit of tension.

Alien Alchemy - Tricky little memorization game, had to play a few times to get the ending story. :smith: I love the music, hitboxes a little bigger on the drinks would've made it more enjoyable but less of a panic.

Panicking Manneken: Pee Pee Panic - HARD HITTING POLITICAL SATIRE - Not much gameplay variation but the screen shake is responsive.

Station Merde - Well, that lifeform made me panic. :stonk:

Oh No! Volcano! - This game is wrecking my face in; love the variety of obstacles though!

An Escape The Room Game But Everything Is On Fire - What a rollercoaster! I laughed, I cried, I blamed anime!

Kernel Panic - As someone who works with computers, this is 100% accurate to real life hacking. Strong passwords.

Life is Simply Unfair - The music is very anti-panic; but most people dying within 50 miles of their home is a little depressing. :(

PaniCATS - Might want to bold the OpenAL requirement; otherwise accurately depicts trying to herd cats. Not sure why that's the time up monster but hey, go with what works.

Honeybee Havoc - My trial expired and I am interested in purchasing your full game. :staredog: Totally aside, I would recommend hosting on itch.io or somewhere other than mediafire, as it tends to try and spam downloaders for other software when people go for your game.

Fancy Feasts - Solid voice acting; also I broke the game by mashing P too quickly. Otherwise, I can see how using broken glass might cause panic in cooking.

Bodega Blast - SUPERMARKET SWEEP the game? Awesome. This really speaks to me because I also typically try to spend as little time as is humanly possible in a grocery store.

That's all the games that had public links! Really impressed by the quality of the entries!

I believe I played all the games with public builds?

Delinda Airlines: Great style, great voice acting, but it's a bit hard to click on the passenger you need to deal with, especially when turbulence kicks in. Stuff ramps up fast and so I also never made it to Day 2. I'm going to give it another shot tomorrow though and try to do better.

Fire in Building 13: Nice atmosphere, and the mechanic with the fires is a good idea for the theme, though the sense of slowness in general kind of makes it less tense.

kernel_panic: When I saw there was a walk-through I thought this might be a bit much to deal with but it was good fun and the story itself is quite nice. Unfortunately it crashed a few times, and I couldn't download from poop-2 and thus move forward. I very much appreciated that I did not do things the way the walk-through suggested but things still worked. (Eg. I downloaded and decrypted instead of uploading the decryption program). This was quite cool.

Life Is Simply Unfair: Looks really nice, and the little voices are just great. I managed to skip all the pips in the last row of the gameboard despite not having a d20 to roll, so I guess the RNG really did love me!

PaniCATS: Cats are such shits oh man. Novel idea and mechanics, those cats are adorable and the fail-state is very silly.

ARACHNAFOE-FS-170: The audio and visuals are top-notch. It's very Devil-Daggers-but-2D and that constant movement and enemy management stuff was great. My only gripe is that I feel I saw all the upgrades and stuff a bit soon, but maybe I just quit too early. gently caress spiders.

Fancy Feasts: Jesus christ. I laughed out loud several times, the premise and mechanics were kind of like what my original idea was but actually good and stuff. An experience, this was.

Honeybee Havoc: Those swarms looked great, the names were silly, and I was glad to recognize the second act from previous stuff, and that ending was perfect.

Oh No! Volcano!: I don't have a controller and had to guess the controls (because I was too dumb to read the awfuljams page) and even though that process was very frustrating, I am planning to keep playing it and unlock more characters. For such a short jam I wouldn't expect a game like this to make me want to play more, so well done.

windows boss 900: I'm really glad you added the little tips at the start of the game. I played once trying to see how high a production score I could get. Then I played a second time to be the worst. I was and it showed.

Station Merda/e: I really liked the look of the ship and objects, and especially the spooky monsters. On several occasions I would just run to the airlock for fun. Not sure why that was satisfying.

Yo! Let's Up!: It looks, sounds, and feels adorable. If I could make a suggestion it would be to space the coins out further. I was never lucky enough or made it far enough for the tower to tip before I had lost in some other way. The hats are a great little addition and motivation to continue.

DDAFPST Ostriches: I liked the first part of the game better than the second, but the visual style is great regardless. Also I love this: very very much.

Panicking Manneken: Pee Pee Panic: Yuuuuuup. Very Afal. Pretty relaxing, actually. Especially the grapes.

Bodega Blast: The sprites are very impressively drawn, the idea is cool and very on theme, and it has sick loving ramps.

An Escape The Room Game But Everything Is On Fire: I almost can't stand how much I love this loving game. My brother watched me play it in its entirety, even when we couldn't figure out the last ending because we forgot about a thing and tried everything we could think of for 30 minutes after getting the others. Ultigonio did a killer loving job on the music. The writing was great and the story as a whole and the ending and oh man. It just felt very good, the whole way.

E: Hopefully the last few teams put up public builds to try sometime too!

Played some games, here's my thoughts

DDAFPST Ostriches
This thing has looked pretty incredible from the get go, the style is really drat awesome and I appreciate the writing. It's real drat hard to tell what character you're controlling in a 1 player setup though and the obstacles felt a little too hard to avoid.

Yo! Let's Up
This is real fun. I'm guessing by the UI you've already made this one with phones in mind but I'd totally throw a dollar at it if it's on the App Store. My only criticism might be that the starting momentum feels kind of low after you've come off a good run.

Delenda Airlines
This was pretty cool, it felt like something where there were probably concessions that had to be made in the context of the jam. I'd say the Get/Give Food buttons were a bit confusing but once I figured out more of the UI it was pretty manageable. I think clicking the passengers could be a little tricky at times but I imagine that is part of the challenge.

ARACHNAFOE
This is cool but similar to Yo! Let's Up I think the beginning momentum is a little rough once you've gotten going. Also I noticed a distinct lack of dads and/or dongs. 0/10.

Oh No! Volcano!
Really fun, I need to go back and unlock more characters. Steam support was really drat surprising (also makes me wish I had time to implement scoreboards) is the game actually endless or is there ever a fixed ending? For some reason the game didn't like my controller and took a reboot or two to work (it would start me in the 'Restart' screen and wouldn't accept any input)

An Escape Room but Everything is on Fire
Reminds me of the classic 'Dont poo poo your pants', nice job with the writing, quick and clever and made me want to see all the endings.

You could consider the 'end' of the game to be unlocking all 10 survivors, but the run itself is endless and some truly ridiculous scores are possible. The lava does get faster and faster, but so do the runners, so things get very frantic. I'm very curious to see who has the highest score once everyone's had a shot. Also, there's some interesting characters to unlock.

I've patched the public build with some minor things (they only matter if you 100% the game)

Clever Betty
To Giggs and others who had a hard time with Delenda Airlines, try the latest build, which at time of writing is v.1.0.3. The difficulty is less insane than that of v1.0.2 but not as stupid easy as the one the judges got. (If you want to know which version you have, it's in the file name of the zip you downloaded.)

I'm still not super happy with the difficulty since I want each level to last 2-3 mins so it's hard to get panic spread to be just right because it increases exponentially. At any rate, you can control the difficulty yourself and see what setting suits you best. Play around with the little +/- buttons on the pause screen. Contrary to what the onscreen text says, the lower you go the harder it is, and the higher you go the easier it is  I threw that in literally 20 mins before submission, it just increments/decrements stat decay. Also, you can use page up/page down to increase/decrease the speed of the game. Confusingly, down makes it faster and up makes it slower. (That's because it adds 0.1 seconds to the game speed multiplier, which is set to one by default.)

Incidentally, judges, these controls are also in the judging build!

E: wrt the difficulty of v.1.0.2 build that nobody can get past the first level of, I thought that was OK because I was able to beat the game at that difficulty :downs: so it is theoretically possible but I recommend getting the latest anyway since it has a fix for a minor bug that caused some passengers to have a hard time pathfinding their way back to their seats.

Also there are a lot of hidden mechanics in the game. Let's just say if you can do something, there's a reason for it.

One minor gripe: I seem to die a lot on the corners of blocks, seems touchy about not landing on your feet. Otherwise, stellar showing for just two weeks.

Cheers, the edge-of-blocks thing is awesome feedback, that happened to me as well but I kept ignoring it as a thing to address until you brought it up.

Yo! Let's Up!: It looks, sounds, and feels adorable. If I could make a suggestion it would be to space the coins out further. I was never lucky enough or made it far enough for the tower to tip before I had lost in some other way. The hats are a great little addition and motivation to continue.

<3 I've been getting a ton of feedback and everyone has different requests, so I think I'll add different play modes. "make a hosed up tower until it falls" could be a fun one!

This is real fun. I'm guessing by the UI you've already made this one with phones in mind but I'd totally throw a dollar at it if it's on the App Store. My only criticism might be that the starting momentum feels kind of low after you've come off a good run.

I make silly mobile games like this as my day job so yeah :) Hard Mode will be a thing for sure.

WINNER = Giggs for Alien Alchemy

I'm a sucker for good music and memory puzzles, and this has both, plus making aliens vomit from bad drinks is fun. Please tell me your email or twitter or Steam ID or something so I can send you the URL to the gamemaker studio bundle.

Well, jeez. Thank you! I'm glad you liked the music, it was a very different thing for me to write dance stuff. I've never been clubbing or listened to that kind of music and I ended up googling phrases like "Most popular dance songs all time" and "AGGROTECH INDUSTRIAL" and "what aliens dance to" to get a feel for it.

"Tubular! Catch you on the flip side!"
Some Quick Reviews:

Stationary - Nice little rougue-esque game. Not too difficult. Not much there either.

Arachnafoe - Devil Daggers meets Nuclear Throne. Pretty cool but it felt as though each spider took like a million bullets. Pennance: 69. Nice.

Yo! Let's up! - Cute little mobile game. Didn't see much of the panic theme there. Would love to see this expanded to a full Free To Play mobile game.

An Escape The Room Game But Everything Is On Fire - My favourite for narrative so far. Took a while for me to realise that I was a dog. drr drr drr.

Kernel Panic - Reminded me a lot of uplink. Seemed to crash a lot if I pressed enter too many times. Not sure how to get the achievements because they didn't seem to update for me when playing.

Life is Simply Unfair - Neat little board game. I'm not sure if the quiz at the end is supposed to be possible, it didn't give me enough time to do it.

PaniCATS - Kitties! Herding cats is hard. Didn't seem there were enough time sometimes. The petting zoo are also doesn't have an option to pet the cats just pick them up and throw them and I don't want to be mean to cats.

Honeybee Havoc - Oddly compelling game... up until Super Turbo Voynich Manuscript 2 came up. Ending was disappointing but there we go.

Fancy Feasts - This is pretty polished. Nice Krell-esque game. Not sure if it's supposed to be possible because I got an F on everything. I liked the particle effects.

Bodega Blast - I'm going to get people shouting at me for saying "I liked the vaporwave vibe" when the music was just trying to be muzak and the vaporwaveish vibe was just incidental. Controls were a bit clunky but I'm not sure if that was intentional. Cute sprite work.

Great stuff so far! Looking forward to playing the rest.

Panicking Manneken: Pee Pee Panic - HARD HITTING POLITICAL SATIRE - Not much gameplay variation but the screen shake is responsive.

Yep, I wasn't sure what to do with the gameplay variation. Someone suggested have stuff flying around the place stopping you pee properly but after 3 days of working on it I was bored and decided to submit it straight away.

The screenshake is based on vlambeer's screenshake code for Wasteland Kings (which became Nuclear Throne). Before, I would have the screen shake at a constant magnitude for X amount of seconds. Vlambeer's one had a "decaying" screenshake so the screen would die down and stop naturally. I find that one to be one that makes more sense because you could then compound the shake and make it bigger (for example one exploding barrel would do a small shake which would be a short few milliseconds, whereas a bunch of barrels exploding would cause a huge screenshake that decade over a few seconds). It's one I like to abuse a lot, and can be used for stuff other than the screen/camera (in my last jam game I made the buildings shake a little when they got hit, it's a little subtle but it worked).

Also, yes, I'll take "HARD HITTING POLITICAL SATIRE".

I can't believe I have a "style" that can be recognised. Thanks for playing!

BOSS 900 - I won? Interesting concept as a work day simulator, bit hard to tell what's working versus not. Maybe I should work my employee more than 8 hours to increase the challenge.

I think I should have stated at the start that the goal is to maximize your total output. There's supposed to be tension between maximizing output and not driving your worker into the ground and thereby losing future output.

windows boss 900: I'm really glad you added the little tips at the start of the game. I played once trying to see how high a production score I could get. Then I played a second time to be the worst. I was and it showed.

Cool! Yeah I thought the fun would be basically making Guantanamo Bay as an office.

Ultigonio did a killer loving job on the music. The writing was great and the story as a whole and the ending and oh man. It just felt very good, the whole way.

I'm glad you enjoyed it! Hopefully the songs that had lyrics were clear and understandable - I have extremely minimal experience with vocals, so I'm always trying random things when I do implement them.

The last phrase in both songs are a bit hard to hear, I think I could guess the ending of the second one, but the first I'm kinda lost with. They're still very fun though.

Are you planning on posting the music for download anywhere? I might just have to get the main song to listen to when I have something to do and want to feel fun while doing it.

Got the latest version and I played it again, and beat it! I didn't up the difficulty, though I could have I guess. I got 97% as my lowest. I'm glad I played again, because I got to see more of what you put in there, including people getting angry and stuff. I smacked the first person that I thought was freaking out and he died of a heart attack and I'm into that. I liked the different classes too, because I felt that I was strategizing about splitting up my stewards between them. 1 in first/business and 2 in casual or whatever it's called, until things got more demanding and I was putting out fires all over. Fun!
