My wife and I are taking a short trip to SD right after New Year's. We'll have one full day where we're planning on getting away from the city and exploring some nearby hiking areas. Any good recommendations for some day hikes or even just nice drives to desert areas? Joshua Tree's a few hours one way, but I was hoping there'd be something similar a little closer. Any tips appreciated!

You're in luck, San Diego has a ton of hiking trails without even going far from the city: http://www.sandiegohikers.com/
