Kim Kardashian actually does irritate me more than Lena Dunham, but I also do not think that Kim Kardashian is actually taken sincerely by anyone. Like, Kim is famous for BEING talentless and beautiful. She got robbed and most folks kind of thought it were funny rather than feeling considerable concern or sympathy.

To be fair it was kind of funny about Kim getting robbed. Hey it turns out that obsessively documenting every vapid second of your life online can have repercussions. "Okay here I am alone in my hotel room with literally ten million dollars worth of jewelry and only one bodyguard because I sent the rest of my bodyguards home for the night, say hello to the online crowd Paco, (surly grunt) boy if anybody came in here and robbed me of TEN MILLION DOLLARS worth of jewelry it would sure be easy, here's the entire layout of my luxurious hotel room including all conceivable entrances and escape routes" *gets robbed* Who could have seen that coming? Back in my day the Ocean's Eleven wannabes had to do all kinds of research and disguise themselves as bellboys and housekeeping staff to get a look at the layout of the job, now in the age of social media your intended victims do all the intelligence work for you. Instead of "casing the joint" and "planning a heist" you just have to go on Facebook.

kim kardashian once took out a full page ad in the new york times railing against the wall street journal for publishing a denial of the armenian genocide on top of being prettier and more talented, she even has better political beliefs than lena dunham since she'll actually go near a black person

I first heard of KK when she had that sex tape. I always assumed she was just a porn person, and never understood why she was so popular. She was like the most popular porn star ever.

The greatest fame is achieved not by being admirable, but by being divisive. If everyone sees you as equally admirable than there is little to argue about. Praise alone does not generate further discussion or propagate throughout diverse groups. But argument does. Argument intensifies the feelings held by both the admirers and the critics, as they justify their view in the face of opposing views, internally at first but then verbally, in individual or mass online communication. For in the face of conflict people come to be more motivated to evangelise their view on the celebrity, to "win" the argument by popularising their viewpoint over their opponent's viewpoint. This is encouraged if the argument gets nasty, as people will come to associate the feelings of being insulted with their opinion of the celebrity or the people that dislike the celebrity. They will sometimes even come to identify as their view: forming online communities or "tribes" (some of which even become so distinct as to earn labels and stereotypes). So it is that controversy and argument not only generates greater attention, it also generates greater emotion: whipping the dull emotions of lukewarm praise or criticism into stronger emotions of love or hate. There are plenty of modern examples of this sort of celebrity, but I think most celebrities have been controversial in their own time. Certainly religious figures tended to be.
