I'm being ridiculously ambitious with my reading goals for 2017 (possibly it's because I feel like I need to atone for reading all those Baby-Sitters Club books in 2016), so here's what I'm doing: Name: nerdpony Number: 52 Book Lord: Yes Also: BookRiot 12 Nobel winners 6 BotMs At least 20 women, at least 20 PoCs, at least 5 in German, at least 10 in translation, at least 5 published in 2017 Review everything I read on Goodreads Edit: For anyone else doing the BookRiot challenge or looking for recommendations that fit into the categories (some of them overlap with Book Lord), here's a list of recommendations from NYPL librarians: https://www.nypl.org/blog/2016/12/22/doing-2017-read-harder-challenge-try-these-books. I, for whatever reason, hardly read at all the first few weeks of the month... and then went on to read three books in three days. As such, I'm on track for my 52 books for the year. Here's what I read this month: 1. Giant Days, Vol. 3 - John Allison (4/5) 2. A Man Lies Dreaming - Lavie Tidhar (3/5) 3. Mother Night - Kurt Vonnegut (5/5) 4. The Glass Castle - Jeannette Walls (4/5) On deck for February: Golden Delicious by Christopher Boucher (which I started last night), Theodor Mommsen's History of Rome, Vol. 1 (for the Nobel challenge, but I'll be reading it in English and not in German), Tsar of Love and Techno by Anthony Walla, and whatever the BotM ends up being. 1) Read some books. Set a number and go hog wild. 4/52 2) Of the books you read this year, make sure at least 20% of them are written by women. 1/11 (Personal challenge: 1/20) 3) Of the books you read this year, make sure at least 20% of them are written by someone non-white. 0/11 (Personal challenge: 0/20) (Or maybe 1 if we're counting Lavie Tidhar) 4) Read at least one book by an LGBT author. 5) Read at least one TBB BoTM and post in the monthly thread about it. 6) Read a book someone else in the thread recommends (a wildcard!) 8) Read something which was published before you were born. 9) Read something in translation. 10) Read something from somewhere you want to travel. 11) Read something political. 12) Read something historical. 12a) Read something about the First World War. 13) Read something biographical. 14) Read some poetry. 15) Read a play. 16) Read a collection of short stories. 17) Read something long (500+ pages). 18) Read something which was banned or censored. 19) Read a satire. 23) Read something that you love. 24) Read something from a non-human perspective. Here's what I read in February: 5. Golden Delicious - Christopher Boucher (3/5) 6. The Tsar of Love and Techno - Anthony Marra (4/5) 7. From the Mixed-Up Files of Mrs. Basil E. Frankweiler - E.L. Konigsburg (5/5) 8. The Long Way to a Small, Angry Planet - Becky Chambers (3/5) 9. The View from Saturday - E.L. Konigsburg (4/5) 10. God Bless You, Mr. Rosewater - Kurt Vonnegut (4/5) 11. The Crying of Lot 49 - Thomas Pynchon (4/5) On deck for March: Finishing The Plague, convincing myself to finally start Theodor Mommsen's History of Rome, Vol. 1, maybe Das Kalkwerk by Thomas Bernhard, which is my wildcard. I also need to step up my authors of color reading. I've also amended my reviewing challenge I set for myself to instead be to review half of what I read this year -- I've realized that I simply don't have review-worthy thoughts about everything I read. 1) Read some books. Set a number and go hog wild. 11/52 2) Of the books you read this year, make sure at least 20% of them are written by women. 4/11 (Personal challenge: 4/20) 3) Of the books you read this year, make sure at least 20% of them are written by someone non-white. 0/11 (Personal challenge: 0/20) (Or maybe 1 if we're counting Lavie Tidhar) 5) Read at least one TBB BoTM and post in the monthly thread about it. 17) Read something long (500+ pages). 23) Read something that you love. 24) Read something from a non-human perspective. Here's what I read in March: 12. Archie, Vol. 1: The New Riverdale - Mark Waid (3/5) 13. Giant Days, Vol. 4 - John Allison (4/5) 14. The Great American Whatever - Tim Federle (3/5) 15. Mostly Void, Partially Stars - Joseph Fink and Jeffrey Cranor (4/5) On deck for April: I'm currently in the middle of Tales of the City by Armisted Maupin and A Closed and Common Orbit by Becky Chambers and have a bunch of other library books out to read. I also promised my partner I'd finish The Dispossessed, so probably that. I just picked up Amberlough by Lara Elena Donnelly from the library yesterday and am excited to read that. But I also just started playing Skyrim (five years late on that one, I know), and that's sucking up a lot of my reading time. 1) Read some books. Oops, missed a few months again. I read a fair bit in August, although it was a lot of comics (and YA), and not as much in September... a developer bought my building and my partner and I ended up moving seventeen days after we were initially told we were going to have to move. So packing/moving/unpacking (as well as the half-marathon that I'm training for and work being really stressful) cut into my reading time. I'm also not doing very well on basically any of my personal challenges and am honestly just going to drop them for now. I'm planning on finishing Book Lord, Book Riot, and maybe Pop Sugar. I do definitely want to do the Nobel read sometime, but I don't think this is the right time for it. Anyways, here are my August and September reads: 52. Meddling Kids - Edgar Cantero (5/5) 53. Beastly Bones - William Ritter (3/5) 54. The Refrigerator Monologues - Catherynne M. Valente (4/5) 55. Ghostly Echoes - William Ritter (3/5) 56. Giant Days, Vol. 5 - John Allison (4/5) 57-61. Ms. Marvel, Vols. 1-5 - Willow Wilson (5/5, 4/5 x4) 62. When the English Fall - David Williams (4/5) 63. The Dire King - William Ritter (3/5) 64. When Dimple Met Rishi - Sandhya Menon (3/5) 65. The Epic Crush of Genie Lo - F.C. Yee (3/5) 66. What Makes This Book So Great - Jo Walton (4/5) 67. My Real Children - Jo Walton (5/5) 68. Patsy Walker AKA Hellcat, Vol. 3 - Kate Leth (3/5) 69. Grace and the Fever - Zan Romanoff (4/5) 70. The Gentleman's Guide to Vice and Virtue - Mackenzi Lee (3/5) Highlights were Meddling Kids, my Ms. Marvel reread, and my discovery of Jo Walton, especially My Real Children. Here's how I'm doing on the challenge: 1) Read some books. Set a number and go hog wild. 70/52 2) Of the books you read this year, make sure at least 20% of them are written by women. 62% 3) Of the books you read this year, make sure at least 20% of them are written by someone non-white. 21% 5) Read at least one TBB BoTM and post in the monthly thread about it. 6) Read a book someone else in the thread recommends (a wildcard!) 9) Read something in translation. 12a) Read something about the First World War. 14) Read some poetry. 15) Read a play. nerdpony fucked around with this message at 02:28 on Oct 11, 2017 |
