Oh man. This game and the rest of the series was a big part of my childhood. I loved playing the series. There's so much I remember about the workings of the Campaign.

So something I noticed: The Black Sails soldiers started out non-upgraded, but as the mission went on, they turned into their Medium selves, and by the time the Atlantian Army showed up, they were upgraded to heavies. Since I never played Titan Campaign, I assume that enemies quickly upgrading their units becomes a big part of it.

Also one curious thing for the cutscenes is that some units use their lower quality in game models, but others, like Hoplites use cutscene only models where they look more detailed and have a universal look, which looks the Heavy version with fully Upgraded Shields. I'm not sure if they made animations for them or not, since I do know one cutscene much later on where they moment they enter a cutscene battle, they swap back to their in-game models.

If some of Age of Empires III's missions are any indication, i'm wondering if we'll see alot of quick base building to ward off a huge early enemy attack. Because I noticed that speed building was a big part of the early game of your video, like you need to have your moves set up in advance. That actually does make me wonder. Is there any mission where you can get screwed by random chance?

Also, i'd like to talk about special factions in Campaigns and how they're used, but I might wait till they truly become relevant. Right now, i'll bring up how the campaign uses very special teams for express purposes to add more features to certain missions, whether it be supporting the enemy or making set pieces able to occur. The Egyptian missions are the most obvious example.

It's a shame that Awakening soured you on the series so much. I'm not sure if I should say to reccomend Fates or not. On one hand, it was a huge step up gameplay wise from Awakening, with alot of the more abusable stuff from that game being nerfed (Pair Up was reworked to be way less powerful, and now running on stricter rules) and made more interesting, new mechanics to the franchise that were at least interesting, and a return to the more intricate, tight map design from the older games in Conquest. On the other hand, the story is so much worse than Awakening in almost every way. To the point where it felt like the biggest obstacle for enjoying Conquest for me.

Going back to Age of Mythology, i'm really happy that I will soon be able to play the game again! Since I acquired a Surface as a hand me down, which I plan to use to play AoM on. I've tested it on Age of Empires II HD, and it ran fine enough, plus the Mac version was able to run on my old 2008 Mac Book (Which was the Vanilla version that didn't even come with The Titans), so hopefully it should be able to run a 2002 game no problem. It's been such a long time since i've played the game, and I can't wait to try out the new Chinese civilisation.

So I finally got a brand new copy of Age of Mythology through Steam after all these years, I took Tale of the Dragon for a spin and... Um... Okay, is that first mission supposed to be unfair, unfun, and just kind of terrible? I played this on Moderate by the way.

(I'm hiding this in case Melth doesn't want this campaign spoiled. I'll hold back on my detailed thoughts about Tale of the Dragon's campaign if he wants it kept under wraps)

Because they expect you to be defensive when you're barely able to scrape together resources to make an army to fight off the huge swarm of spongey, high damage myth units they keep throwing at you with useless heroes. Or losing because they decide to attack piles of dirt that make you lose the mission if they get destroyed and you didn't notice because they're attacking somewhere else on the map. Or them ripping your Navy and Fishing Boats to shreds, because the devs decided that what an already bulky Myth unit needed was the ability to freely cross bodies of water. Or you being given Scout Cavalry with the line of sight of an Age of Empires II KNIGHT. Or one time when the game glitched and started me on the first age requiring me to waste time and resources to build back up to it, getting my defenses up after losing most of my soldiers AND THEN LOSING BECAUSE THEY DESTROYED A GODDAMN DIRT PILE.

Hell, even the Civilisation tutorial is just cheap. Who decided it was a good idea to show a minute long, unchanging battle just to display what the Heroes and Monks do? This is just sloppy all around.

The Age of Empires II connections ran even deeper when I got to the second mission of Tale of the Dragon, and it played like an Age of Empires II map, with it's building capture focus, and more rigid design (Which in AOE2 was due to less features and graphical ability). Specifically, the Manzikert map from the Conquerors expansion, except with really basic and uninteresting combat setups (Make this unit to fight the other unit, keep doing it and then make a base in a boring map to do a boring Town Centre capture.) So when I swapped over to trying The Golden Gift and The Titans Campaign again, I was seeing actual detail and effort (Okay, Golden Gift 2 is kinda lacking, but I appreciate the sentiment of what they tried to do)

Even the Chinese just feel uninspired. Their God Powers (The few i've used) are just boring, their myth units aren't interesting, and they have no real unique skills that made the other Civilisations so distinct from each other. The Chinese in Age of Empires III had way more creativity behind them.

So i've long since dropped the Tale of the Dragon Campaign (Good riddance honestly) and decided to replay the original campaigns, starting from Titans, and going back to the original Fall of the Trident content. The big reason for this is that back in the day, due to me being a dumb kid, I abused cheats throughout the entire campaign, just to goof around with everything I could do. Also using the Wrath of the Gods cheat to unload on enemy bases was just too much fun.

Since I play games differently now, and especially after seeing Melth in action, I decided I would do it right this time. No more screwing around. Setting it to Moderate difficulty, and playing through everything with no cheats. As of this writing, I beat The Titans campaign, which is still fantastic. I won't go into detail, since I want Melth to do it for me when he gets to that campaign (Eventually). But now, i'm on the regular campaign, up to Mission 8.

I am wondering, if you aren't going for speed runs, is it better to bunker down and build up defences first, or just focus on building as many soldiers as you can when you have a stable production line going? This is referring to missions like the first three Troy ones where you are given a base with the objective to tear down the enemy one.

Jaysus that Son of Osiris. I was not expecting Titan to get that brutal on these limited deployment missions. Also, they seemed to have removed a unit sent at you on Moderate The Scarabs Who I suppose wouldn't be as big a threat as the more numerous Catapults. One note about the former unit is that having one absolutely saved my rear end on the Final Mission of Fall of the Trident

When playing as the Egyptians, I really only stuck to Axemen and Slingers. Spearmen never felt like they had much of a use to me. I like them for their Resource gathering abilities, but their human soldiers feel pretty weak.

Also, what's your policy on spoilers regarding future units?

Actually, since it was brought up, what are the difference between the villager units of the different civilisations? I mean, with the Norse and Atlantians it's obvious, but I never thought they'd have different resource/building rates between Greek and Egyptian villagers.

As a fan of the original Rise of Nations who didn't play Legends, what exactly was wrong with the game?

So normally on this mission, there's a side objective where you have to break through an enemy village on your island, and go through an armed guard to destroy their Lighthouse. Doing so gives an amusing scene where the enemy Navy crashes into a bunch of rocks. (Or rather they sail into a rocky area and their kill commands are activated)

There's an amusing Easter Egg if you check the Mission Hints the moment the mission starts. It reads, paraphrased: "Next time, don't drink so much wine before going to sleep."

Random Note: I am extremely grateful for the Heroes in AoM being distinct models and having auras to make them stand out. I'm saying this because I did the first Dracula mission of the Forgotten Empires Expansions in AoEII and lost at the very end, because the game thought it was a good idea that have you escort 4 nondescript units through like a hundred units fighting in a tight area.

Between this and the Path of the Dragon Expansion, i'm beginning to think Forgotten Empires aren't exactly the most balance and polish minded team. (Well, they're modders, but still)

I believe Kamos' corpse is actually an entirely separate object. You can place it in the scenario editor. I might be wrong. Memory is a bit hazy on that.

So for more fun flavor text, Boar Arkantos and Boar Ajax have amusing descriptions on their info pages (Like saying that being turned into a boar didn't change Ajax's personality in any way) and for the pigs, the description for them reads: "Eating this pig will make you sad."

So one very weird secret in this mission is that in the right area of the caverns, you can stumble across a bunch of workers trying to break down a wall... Which opens up to reveal a bunch of mummies, of all things, that promptly kill the workers. (You can't save them, since their death flags activate right after the tomb opening is deleted) When you kill the mummies, you can find about three relics inside their unexplained Egyptian Tomb.

Are the CPU only Upgrade setups for the Myth Units only in Titan difficulty? I wasn't actually aware the CPU did things like that. Hell, I assumed that their seemingly infinite resources in some missions came from huge resource sites you can't reach on the map. It reminds me of something in Fire Emblem Fates: Conquest, when despite there being two nations with distinct classes and skills that come with them, the enemies you fight in Conquest will have skill setups that involve skills from the other nation, or even original ones purposefully designed to screw you over.

Also, since I haven't figured out optimal resource gathering, what is the recommended priority of food gathering, out of the different types?

So when I replayed this mission recently on my Moderate run, I put my troops to work on slowly chipping down the wall. Unfortunately for me, I forgot about the Giant Army spawning on the health percentage of the wall. And I hadn't made Siege Weapons yet. This lead to an absolute mess of a battle where the decimated remains of the army dragged Skult and the Flag Bearer to the end.

A few notes: On Moderate, you start out with Heavy Hoplites. Titan seems to downgrade them for some vain attempt to make the mission harder. Also, there's a clever bit of foreshadowing in this mission that you'll pick up on during a second playthrough. The god you're worshipping for this mission.

During the intro cutscene to the last mission, I could have sworn that in the original windows version, Gargarensis' Hoplite brigades start as the cutscene Heavy ones, but turn into Champions as they attack. And I don't know who those unfortunate blue base Hoplites are, because if they're what's left of the Atlantian Army, that's depressing. :(
