I like that it actually ended up being possible for you to go clear out the base in the time they gave you to survive. Self-imposed challenges like that are pretty great when the game doesn't shut them down with bullshit defense cannons or whatever.

They tried that on the Trojan horse level with dozens of towers on unreachable cliffs and no siege weapons allowed for the player. I beat it anyway :P

Yep! It was the laziest possible way to make their guards not kill them. Plus, as I've said, this game is REALLY determined not to make escort missions suck.

This was me before I discovered I was using RTSes as a poor man's substitute for tower defense.

I consider the only worthwhile tower defense I’ve ever played to actually be one of the WC3 scenarios called Skibi’s TD. To this day it remains the only game I have ever played which I can’t beat on hard mode. I am 60% confident in fact that no one has ever actually done it on hard mode.

They could also have very easily simply made the target island not have an area large and open enough for the passage.

They set you up with a Major God who has access to the power, start you in an early enough age that you can choose that power, and don't prevent you from using the power on that island.

If they thought about the power at all, they were clearly okay with it.

Yeah, it’s not like it makes some kind of big difference, just saves 45 seconds of watching boats sail untouched past a complete lack of defenses

That was a really hectic mission. Your run contrasts really well with some of the earlier missions where you had everything planned out; especially in the middle there it seemed like you were running on a bit of improv rather than strict planning.

Yeah, the beginning was done with clockwork precision, but after that the enemy becomes unpredictable. Particularly since the meteors are so random in what they destroy.

Wasn't the plot twist that Poseidon himself was helping Gargarensis (IIRC because Poseidon is the father of Gargarensis )?

I thought it was kinda neat that ultimately the game didn't slot Hades as the designated villain, even if it did fake the player mechanically during the early chapters.

At least as I read it, it's more that Gargarensis was helping Poseidon with an already established evil plan that needed a mortal to spearhead it. And they're both in it for their own profit rather than than any actual father-son bond, with Gargarensis apparently thinking Poseidon 'owes him one'

Hunt11 posted:

It shows that they payed attention to Greek myths as Hades was always one of the nicer gods outside of that stuff with Persephone.

Yeah, I appreciated that. They show in most places that they really studied the original mythologies quite well, and when they're inaccurate it's a deliberate choice to tell a better story.

Working the forge? You mean Hephaestus? I'm pretty sure he tries to rape Athena in the myth about the founding of Athens or some other city.

Yep! That story doesn’t actually make much sense with anything else we know about Hephaestus, but it WAS a story about him.

However, we have a much bigger and worse case of him being horrible: Harmonia’s Necklace (included as a relic in this game and I think I commented on it in mission 22).

After Aphrodite gave birth to Ares’s daughter Harmonia, Hephaestus decides to pull a Hera by taking vengeance on the child and any random passerby. So he made Harmonia a cursed necklace that ruined the lives of everyone who came in contact with it. This caused like 5 myths worth of terrible stuff. Harmonia and her husband Cadmus were cursed into incurring the anger of the gods and turned into snakes, a descendant was Semele who got the necklace and then Hera showed up and tricked her into asking Zeus to show his final form, and Jocasta was also a victim of it and ended up accidentally marrying her son Oedipus, etc.

The necklace is a minor detail that’s left out of many tellings of all these stories, but it’s supposed to be in them. Hephaestus caused all of those terrible things to happen to totally random mortals because he was mad at his wife. God logic.

Hestia was pretty swell though.

I wonder if an earlier vision of the AoM campaign placed much greater emphasis on the three sides fighting each other. The game's artwork and advertising shows it a lot, and it's understandably part of the game's appeal, but in practice you spend most of the campaign fighting the same culture you're playing as. Different primary god, but most of the campaign is Greek vs Greek, Egyptian vs Egyptian, and Norse vs Norse.

This scenario could be leftover from an earlier iteration of the game's story where the three sides fought each other a lot more.

Yeah, that was my thinking about it too.

It certainly feels like something that might have been intended to be promotional material for an early, less sophisticated version of the game.

Do you need to deal siege damage to the underworld entrances or do they fall pretty readily to any kind of damage?

Well, like you saw, no siege is necessary but it does take a minute or so to tear them down with just hack. In this case I'd say that's worthwhile since otherwise I'd have to tech all the way to heroic age and then build a hill fort.

Potentially, but it’s extremely risky! The trouble is actually enemy krakens which can outrun and instant-kill my transport. The enemy fleet patrols in unpredictable patterns, so I decided to take a certainty of success over a possibility of saving a few seconds but possibly losing everything.

So I've been trying to record the new episode for weeks now, but I keep running into problems. Right now the biggest issue is that the game stutters to an unplayable degree. This has been going on for over a week now and I've tried changing around all the graphics settings and a few other fixes to no avail.

My only guess about what caused this to begin is a big set of windows updates on 5/17, but that's just speculation.

Has anyone else had trouble running AoM lately? Does anyone have a fix or workaround?

Good question! Basically they use their infinite resources to produce units and upgrades at full speed from numerous buildings instead of acting as though they have limited resources. So they attack about 3-5x as hard as they're supposed to.

A few people have been asking when I'll be getting to the Titan's campaign, and the answer is after the China campaign. For now I'm still trying to get a good run of Loki's Temples, not one that takes two hours. I've got a clever strategy in mind, but it needs more testing and refinement.
