The beauty is in what happens because of/after it, it's supposed to look like sheer insanity to pretty much everyone and they did an amazing job making it as goofy as possible. It's the same idea as the insane story the OA told these people, they had to suspend disbelief. that wont hold water if they are making more seasons of this though and there was somehow more meaning to it. if it was a one and done story, then sure.
