Actually in Israel the Zionists and political religious groups are not the same. The former are mostly secular and have been around since the turn of the 20th century, back when they were by and large socialists influenced by the Russian revolutionary groups. The latter are the so-called ultra-orthodox, which form a sizable percentage of the Jewish population in Israel and have an even bigger say in politics since it is VERY difficult to form a coalition government without the political parties that represent them and which they all vote for. The cross-section of these two groups are the religious Zionists, or the modern orthodox movement. Most of the settlers are modern orthodox, but their real power is their party membership in right-wing coalition parties, not the least of which is the Likud which has been in power for most of the last twenty years. After I wrote all this down I see we both have the same point. So feel free to disregard this post.

Well, the Republicans (religious ones, at least) will have a very vested interest in Israel from now until perpetuity, as the Muslims have to be forced out so that the Temple can be rebuilt, and then usher in the return of the Messiah. That's a big deal for the fundies, and they are anxiously awaiting the Final Judgment. I can't believe I actually wrote that in a serious context.
