Isn't the core problem with that the sheer forces involved in modern oval racing being incompatible with any sort of tread blocks? For that matter, what was the last 500 winner to have any real tread on the tires? Clark's Lotus 38? Don't get me wrong, I wouldn't want so much as a sprinkle under those tires, but it seems like downforce and full slicks came hand in hand. You could probably string together a few laps with road course levels of downforce, but you'd have 2005 USGP levels of tire wear.

I mean they could do it, they would just go slow as hell. Also the racing would blow rear end because rooster tails+limited grooves on ovals would mean nobody would even get close to each other. Thats basically what happens when it rains at the Daytona 24, everyone spaces out perfectly equidistant to each other going through the banking.

95 they were testing short tracks and road courses for rain. Only road courses were deemed safe to drive in. I think it's time to try it again with 20 more years of tire tech advances. Hell Michelin has made an intermediate tire into a slick though loads on a p1 car and a cup car a little different.

I was a pretty casual viewer then and had no idea how badly CART was doing behind the scenes, but it was obvious from the start of that season that this was not a healthy racing series. The 18-car grid in the first race (with a bunch of major sponsors missing from the cars that were there) was a monumentally sad sight, and Eurosport's coverage had gone from pretty decent (most races shown live, here in  we even got Finnish commentary for many of the 2001 races) to "whatever, just show the highlights at 1 AM a week later" as they had realized the situation.Gotta say though, those are still some really good-looking race cars. Huh, I forgot PacWest was still around at the start of 2002. I guess there were 20 cars on the grid in Mexico, then, which was still a pretty sorry sight compared to the previous year's 26-car field. PacWest obviously never quite recovered from appearing in Driven.

Sigma Autosport also folded up after 5 races, which is why Ganassi picked up Dixon to keep the field at 18, which was the series contractual minimum for the races. I did like Sigma's schemes, while they lasted.

They were pissed that Mercedes was sticking them with some dumb, young touring car driver in order for Hogan to get free engines. By the 2nd race, nobody was complaining anymore.

It's unfair that his results that season don't really reflect how well he performed. I think in the Rookie championship he finished behind both Carpantier and Salles, both of whom didn't drive nearly as well. The Hogan looked pretty drat cool though.
