The testing process is awful but the reserves are a special beast all by themselves. I don’t need to be the best I just got to be less awful than the rest. Active duty has to really be good in most rates it seems to get ahead. Good luck.

It just depends on the test and how relevant it is to you that year tbh as far as ad. The first time I wa sup for first I studied my rear end off, used the bibs, etc. We were on deployment so what else was I going to do? Got like a 43 or something, next time I didn't study at all and got a high 80s and made first by like 30 points.

It's a pretty hosed up system, like they can put any FC NEC questions on the FC test, I'm sure it's similar for other rates that have a million jobs (IT).

this reminds me of a first class I knew who was planning to retire at the end of deployment. he made Chief and left our det to go do Chief season things and pin his anchor. he then still retired like six months later. there was another first who made it while on terminal and used innappropriate language when saying he wasn't coming back. wow, he would have made a great Chief.

a testament to how stupid and dumb the Seabees are that guys make it or are selected and say "lol gently caress this" instead of gutting it out to bump their retirement pay

Almost all radio and CANES questions. Two things I have never worked with in person as I have never served on a proper warship. Not a single printer question! Unfair!
However I noticed something kinda of funny on quite a few of the questions. They appeared to do the ol “one answer was so wrong it blatant” like a radio answer in a network question. Once I saw that I swear it noticed it a ton so my guesses with stuff at least was bit less random on stuff that really stumped me.

Do they still do that thing where they make you go through everything, "Pin" you, but your pay doesn't start at the new grade until like 4-6 months after your promotion? You need to get paid for it to count toward retirement.

I believe so. However I’ll get around that by buying back my military time since I’m a GS11 and I got 15 years till I can retire. No way my mil rank will ever earn me more than what I should end my civ career as.

Navy pins all of their selectees before their actual promotion takes effect. Why the USMC doesn’t pin any of their SNCOs is beyond me. Waiting 9 months to pin on E-6 and 12 months to pin on E-7 was pretty lovely.

Honestly both approaches are hosed up

"We have determined that you are ready for increased authority and responsibility. We're going to give it to you but we're not going to pay you commensurately LOL"

Vs

"We have determined that you are ready for increased authority and responsibility. We're going to give it to you. At some point. Not now though, even though we think you're ready."

Yeah, from my recollection, which is hazy due to all the Scotch I drank while talking to the British nukes and playing darts, the RN has their senior enlisted run the reactor and ER, and have nuke officers that only do nuke poo poo, usually drawn from the enlisted ranks (?).

Also, aren't all the PLA(N) nuke boats ancient shitheaps?
