Very much looking forward to The Expanse. I fell off Game of Thrones and didn't give a gently caress about anything that went on this last season. Westworld S2 is not this year, right

What's the scoop on Humans? I could do with some more AI-based television, and it's a show I never hear anyone talk badly about, but I almost never hear anyone talk about it, period.

Taboo was pretty interesting. Definitely more of a tone piece than anything else, but it's extremely thick and aggressive in its style. Probably the closest thing we'll get to a Bloodborne movie/tv show (there's even a line about madness coming from the umbilical cord)

STAC Goat posted:You don't want it spoiled. Honestly, it loses all impact if you don't watch it, know the characters, and know the things that happened. You're just reading the last page of the book with no context. Alright, I had never heard of this show before today, now I guess I just won't bother?

Plus the impact on you as a viewer of the character that died is gonna be nil because you didn't know them from watching the show. I don't think that's true, there are a few things that don't work but the themes are pretty universal. Like I said I don't really like the show at all outside of that episode.

There are a few episodes in season 1 that are still really effective. I'll hold up Beyond the Sea as one of the best episodes of that whole show.

I find everyone in The Expanse to be likeable apart from Holden. I don't know that I would say they have less depth than BSG characters at the point where the show is at in comparison to season 1 of BSG. But the shows aren't that similar anyway. Personally I think Expanse is way better, and I liked BSG quite a lot.

I thought Luke Cage was pretty bad so this is a bummer. I thought the casting initially sounded really good and the implied K'un-lun stuff in DD S1 was really neat.

If you really don't like a show after watching one episode you are not obligated to continue

Leftovers S2 is some fuckin S-tier television and 3 is so far keeping up with it. It's one of the most confident shows I've ever seen, I think. Every scene feels like it has huge weight to it and the performances are incredible. Seriously, I forget her name (e: Ann Dowd), but the woman who played Patti deserved the best actress win for that year. (e: she wasn't even fuckin nominated) S1's problem for me was mainly that it was so dour and aggressive, which fit the show but was often annoying to watch. Luckily, from S2 and on it also has moments where it is genuinely one of the funniest shows on TV - see the whole Perfect Strangers bit. Vanderdeath posted:A Dance with Dragons was literally half of the story he wanted to do but spread across 900-something pages. It was easily one of my hardest reads due to sheer boredom because, again, it was over 900 pages and poo poo-all happens until the very, very end of the book. I feel like the show is the exact opposite where it crams 200 pages of story into one episode and so the entire last season was just full-on "wrap that poo poo up dog" mode, with no build-up leading to extremely anticlimactic endings to storylines that had been built up for 5+ years. I don't think either choice is very good in this case. Hakkesshu fucked around with this message at 09:31 on May 3, 2017 |

Pedro De Heredia posted:I'm not sure where you're getting that this was supposed to be one of the most cathartic moments in the whole series. Not from the books, since it hasn't happened there. Not from the series, since it is not a cathartic series. I think that scene very much went for a "gently caress yeah" moment and it fell completely loving flat on its rear end and I hated it, but I also hated most of that last season so maybe it's just not for me. GRRM obviously is incapable of writing a new book, but in the past from my perspective he can pull off way more dramatic gravitas than the showrunners can.

The very last episode of Legion was the low point of the show, but the preceding one or two episodes (whichever one had the Bolero scene in it) was the absolute best episode of that season, so I don't agree that it had an overall decline.

American Gods is better off for not focusing on the plot IMO (this was maybe the best episode of the season), but it's probably going to hurt the show in the long run.

pentyne posted:So after several years of binging Twin Peaks season 1 in a mad fever dream of mystery and confusion I'm finally going to watch season 2 before I start checking out the revival. It's been mentioned several times before but I think it was recommended that you skip the back half of S2 and just watch Fire Walk With Me (and also check out the Twin Peaks-esque episode of Pysch) instead. Any other good ideas on watching order? I would recommend against skipping anything. The show falls off the rails in terms of tone and a few storylines are entirely pointless but there's still plenty of enjoyment to find (especially involving Gordon Cole), and skipping the mid-season 2 episodes will probably lessen your enjoyment of the finale which should not be skipped under ANY circumstances.

Inhumans in the comics are basically Cronenberg's X-Men, so my issue is just that it looks way too sterile and conventional. In the wake of something like Legion, it's just disappointing to see them take such a safe approach, but who knows. I hope it's good.

It is IMO! It's clearly low budget but the writing is surprisingly strong and the performances are good. It seems like they were just given enough money to produce a movie length feature but then they split it into 4 episodes for whatever reason. I'm glad they get to make more. Hope they get some music in there though.
