I ended up watching most of it on Netflix, which is nice since half the swears aren't muted.

Half the fucks weren't muted when it broadcast, although it was completely schizophrenic week to week as to whether they would censor it or let like 4 of them go in a single episode. Literally no rhyme or reason, it wasn't the context as far as I could tell, just entirely arbitrary.

The show ignored a lot about the books too, which was a very good thing since the books are trash and the protagonist (not to mention nearly everyone else) is even more unlikeable in them.

In the very beginning of the book, Trevor lets you know that his mother eventually gets shot in the back of the head by his stepfather. This is not really every brought up again as he goes through his life because his stepfather enters the picture rather later. At the end, he finally gets to the part where his stepfather shoots his mother. She survives via pretty much "literally miracle" as the bullet enters the back of her head, missing her spinal cord by millimeters, ricochets off her cheekbone and comes out by her nose, leaving her perfectly fine and she gets sent home from the hospital the same day. You really don't get the full effect unless you've gotten to "know" his mother, which is what the book is really about; it's almost entirely about him and his relationship with his mom, and the ending is such a surprise happy one that it made me go whoah.

Actually she was out of the hospital in 3 or 4 days and back to work in 7, which is still loving amazing. Also she got shot in the butt too.

I happened to finish the audiobook this afternoon by sheer happenstance and I would also highly recommend it. I wasn't expecting it to be nearly as good as it was.

Yeah, I've always referred to it as Jersey Shore: Harry Potter edition. Once they get out of school they get free money because magic and then bum around being depressed sociopaths loving and hurting each other's feelings then they go to not narnia.

Also the show does not do the forums Julia finds the high level magic dudes on justice in how utterly cringeworthy it is. Mu Zeta posted an example of the author's overwrought creative writing 101 prose, it just gets worse than that.

All that being said of the books (I never did get to the last one) I enjoyed the show for what it was.

I never saw POI as a science fiction show even a tiny bit. It was a procedural, until it tried to be a serial drama and got bad. The Machine was a magic plot device, not scifi.

I didn't hate the first season as much as you guys seem to. Then again, I also don't break out in hives at the prospect of a procedural TV show.

Yeah basically that. This forum is ridiculous with its hatred of anything remotely procedural. POI was at its best when it was just doing a number of the week while maintaining some continuity and having some recurring characters, eg Elias.

I was won over the minute Mick's skeezy boyfriend started talking about how the age of consent was 16 in Connecticut.

I saw the first 5 or 6 episodes before it lost me.

You definitely can't think too hard and the plot is about as telegraphed as anything, but there's definitely, as someone mentioned, a real Justified season 2 feel to it. I'd say give it a shot and you'll know whether its for you, but for every Dumb thing like ATV jousting, there's a slog of dumb things that just leave you saying "what?" "why?" and "oh come on."

It's not that it isn't well put together, the atmosphere and acting and all are actually real good, it just lost me with its shortcomings in plot.

I'm a bit of a new age fuddy duddy when it comes to streaming/phsyical media. I've purged myself of most of my physical stuff, but I'm still a stickler for having a local copy of my media. I can't stand the thought of watching a show and not have it sitting there in Plex as a bit of a memorial in case I ever want to watch it again (which in all reality, I won't). That on top of thought that a streaming service could just stop showing a show/movie makes me uncomfortable.

I'm now on the verge of getting some decent internet in which I'll be able to watch a 720p video (or better!) without having to stop and pause so I'm now weighing up my options for Netflix etc. But now I find myself in another lovely situation. I'm going to be paying more for this internet, and it's going to have a 200GB data cap. This has opened up the possibility of paying for Amazon, Netflix, WWE network, UFC Fightpass, NFL Gamepass, the NHL equivilant, Hulu, Spotify etc which are all things I consume (steal) content from currently.

In summary, I'm going from paying very little for an unlimited but slow as gently caress internet connection and getting all my content for the cost of a VPN service (albeit delayed) to paying more for a capped data connection which now opens up the door for an opportunity to spend about 100 bucks more per month for the legitimate streaming options. I'm so confused!

200 gb would last me about 10 days tops, can you keep the slow unlimited internet?
