Craft your drat metaphors better you hack! :argh: And I even weakly agree with Lester on this one, that Obama's indecisive Syria policy probably strengthened Russian influence there.

I'd say that Russia's strong presence was the cause of Obama backing off.

The first part is probably the most important. I grew up in the "black area" of the city and had no pool access and am a terrible swimmer and don't really like to do it. All my county friends learned at an early age and went to the community pool all the time.

No, the previous poster was right. "Social engineering" means things like letting gays and women in the military. Or apparently blacks in swimming pools and national parks. You know, letting inferior people in places where they don't belong.

Former FBI Director James Comey was "taken aback" by President Donald Trump's request for a personal assurance or pledge of loyalty at a dinner shortly after he took office, a source close to Comey told CNN Friday.

Comey refused to do so, saying he could not provide such a pledge -- those who work at the FBI pledge their loyalty to the US Constitution, not to any individual person -- but he promised to always be honest with the President.

White House press secretary Sean Spicer on Friday rejected the idea that Trump asked Comey to pledge his loyalty. "I think the President wants loyalty to his country and to the rule of law," Spicer said.
Trump himself echoed those remarks in an interview with Jeanine Pirro on Fox News on Friday.
Pressed by Pirro on whether he asked Comey for his loyalty, Trump responded: "No, I didn't, but I don't think it would be a bad question to ask. I think loyalty to the country, loyalty to the US, is important. You know, it depends on how you define loyalty, No. 1; No. 2, I don't know how it got out there because I didn't ask that question."
A description of the dinner and conversation was first reported Thursday night by The New York Times, although CNN had previously reported Comey's refusal to give Trump any assurance of personal loyalty.

Asked on MSNBC Friday about the dinner, former Director of National Intelligence James Clapper said Comey "was uneasy with it, just for the appearance."
As CNN reported, Comey's refusal to pledge loyalty is one of the reasons the President fired him, the other being the acceleration of the probe into alleged collusion between Trump's presidential campaign and Russia.

I hate this "filibuster-proof majority" line. There were 60 people in the Democrats' Senate caucus for about five months total (Franken's election was delayed and Ted Kennedy died), and that includes Joe Lieberman. If all of the 60 were rock-solid leftists, then there would have been a better plan. Thanks to McConnell's non-stop filibustering every single Democrat or Democrat-affiliated independent had to vote yea for anything to pass, so Lieberman had the leverage to personally kill the public option.

There's no doubt that he has a strong claim to Spider-Man, and probably had more influence on him than Lee did for a while there. It's also true that Marvel was pretty terrible about respecting the contributions of their artists, which is why MacFarlane and a bunch of others left to form Image (though they ultimately weren't much better).

It was closer to five weeks than five months.

I dunno if they belong in schools though. Seems like another distraction.

At the beginning of the year, I allowed them in my classroom because a few kids with ADHD had them and it seemed to work for them. Then in the last month, everybody showed up with one and I had to start confiscating them because the kids would, for example, spin them and then drum them on desks or notebooks, they'd pop the bearings out and play with them, and of course the theft issue. So next year, if it's still a fad, I'm only allowing them for kids with a documented diagnosis and a parents' note.
