Pandamn It Feels Good To Be A Gangsta
Grimey Drawer
(As usual, feel free to post poo poo about other Adult Swim shows since no one in TVIV has started a new Adult Swim thread.)

Spoiler policy for ADTRW regulars please don't post spoilers for shows just in case we have people going in blind watching these shows. Well, unless you want to spoil one of the never-ending shonen shows like Naruto, 'cause no one gives a poo poo. Also everyone and their grandma has seen DBZ. Follow-up: not everyone has not seen DB Super, so again, be kind.

Toonami is America's premiere action block... from '97 until '08. They showed a whole bunch of anime (and stuff like Batman: TAS but most people just remember the anime) and are most notable for basically bringing Dragonball Z to the US (for better or for worse). Adult Swim brought it back as their April Fool's Day prank in 2012 and people lost their poo poo nostalgia trippin' so now its back for good and has supplanted the flagging AS Anime block.

Currently airing:

11:30 - Dragon Ball Super
Start charging your power levels

https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=NHcwMlx6a1M

All right raise your hands, did you honestly think for a second that Toonami wasn't gonna show DB Super eventually? I mean DBZ was only their highest rated show ever, why would they not show the sequel series? ANYWAY, if for some reason, you've never heard of Dragon Ball Super, it's... well, basically just more DBZ. All your old DBZ buddies show up and save the world from evil bad guys and junk. If you're a big nerd, you can rejoice that Super's existence makes Dragon Ball GT non-canon. And hey it's still airing in Japan so you're not completely behind, even they don't know everything about the series! (you're completely behind, they're on like episode 70-something). It is important to note that the last two DBZ movies, Battle of Gods and Resurrection F are actually canon in Super, however if you haven't seen those either, worry not because Super retells them in episodic format.

12:00 - Dragon Ball Z Kai: The Final Chapters
like dis if u are a 90s kid

Hey look, DBZ Kai's not dead, what do you know? Everyone expected Kai to go away because for the longest time the Buu Saga hadn't been all Kai-ized and remastered and such, but they finally did it so Toonami's gonna finish strong!
(And they even gave it a little subtitle, how nice.)

If you haven't been watching, I should explain that the "Kai" is there because the animation has been remastered for HDTV (however, it has not been redone entirely, meaning that it is still the old footage in 4:3 aspect ratio, meaning that when this airs you will see annoying black bars on the side of your screen, but don't adjust your TV, it'll just make Goku stretchy (his lamest technique)). The voice acting has also been redone entirely, and the soundtrack has been replaced with the original Japanese one. Those of you who grew up watching the dubbed version in the old days with the replaced score by Bruce Faulconer may now feel free to get into heated comment wars about which music score is superior. Finally, the "Kai" is there because it's supposed to cut a ton of filler. None of that "whole episode worth of charging an attack" poo poo. Kai's all killer, no filler, baby. Unfortunately that means the episode where Goku and Piccolo drive cars is gone and thus the whole thing is HORSESHIT.

I was gonna look for more funny gifs but look, I think I know what everybody wants when we're discussing DBZ:

12:30 - JoJo's Bizarre Adventure: Stardust Crusaders
OH MY GOOOOOODDDDDD

The plot of Jojo's is way too long and convoluted to boil down into one paragraph but suffice it to say it involves following a family on bizarre adventures, and then the story ends and a new chapter starts down the line with a new protagonist of the same bloodline. This particular chapter is easily the most famous. Dio (from part 1) has returned, and now Joseph Joestar (from part 2) must join up with his grandson Jotaro (a.k.a Jojo) to hunt him down and save his daughter/Jojo's mother. This is also when the series' signature... thing, Stands, start showing up. Also this part has a lot of memes floating around the internet so if somehow you don't know about it I'd suggest not looking up too much about the show because your googling/youtube recommend list will end up spoiling poo poo.

https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=eutW1rhA4pM

1:00 - Tokyo Ghoul
Just call them vampires already drat

Tokyo Ghoul takes place in a world where society is divided into two groups: humans and ghouls. Creatures called "ghouls" run around and subsist on human flesh and this isn't shocking to people. Anyway, college student Ken Kaneki runs into some poo poo luck when a girl he's into attempts to kill and eat him (because she's a ghoul, you see) and then a lucky break turns lovely as the girl gets killed in a lucky accident but then the world's worst doctors transplant her organs into him (he got injured too) without loving trying to see if they're compatible. Anyway, Kaneki's half-ghoul now and he's having a rough go of it (it's tough to get in the mindset to start eating human flesh). Also ghoul powers give you weird magic powers like Bleach or Naruto or whatever and the ghoul community is divided between decent folk just trying to get by in society and crazy assholes who go on murder sprees because why not. Also, everybody knows ghouls exist but it doesn't mean that like, they accept the ghouls. Human authorities want them gone. Again, flesh eaters.

https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=yiKRuXfPyBE

1:30 - Hunter X Hunter
Now featuring 100% more weird karate powers

Hunter X Hunter is a show about a kid named Gon who wants to find his dad after finding out said dad isn't as dead as he was led to believe. Pops was a Hunter, so Gon figures that's how he'll get a lead on him. Gon got his Hunter license in the last thread so now we're just watching him and his friends go on merry adventures spoiler alert the adventures aren't that merry and sometimes they're kinda hosed up. It's written by the guy who created Yu Yu Hakusho, which was one of the first shows on Adult Swim oh so many years ago, so perhaps airing on Toonami was Hunter X Hunter's destiny. Anyway, here's the toonami promo:

https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=aGgSyiWcwhk

And here is the ADTRW thread for it which I recommend reading the OP of because it's very funny.

2:00 - Lupin the 3rd Part 4

Lupin was one of the first shows on Adult Swim back when it debuted (watch this old humorous promo, it's very good) so it's good to see it back on the air. If you haven't seen Lupin before it's a very simple usually episodic show about a thief stealing poo poo, like an anime Ocean's Eleven... only with 4. Your main characters are
  • Lupin - Criminal mastermind, if a little goofy. Is really good with disguises and has a wristwatch that basically functions as a mini-grappling hook. His plans are usually crazy complex
  • Jigen - Master gunman with near impeccable aim. Like, he can use a sniper rifle, but usually can just hit whatever he needs to with a pistol with deadly accuracy. Smokes a lot and basically never takes off his hat. He's Lupin's best buddy because he's usually in episodes even when the whole cast isn't around.
  • Goemon - Stereotype samurai. Can cut through pretty much anything with his katana and he's a kung-fu master.
  • Fujiko - Has fantastic tits. Okay that's not fair, she's also a master of disguise and a great thief in her own right, but an awful lot of her screen time is seducing people. She and Lupin have this will-they-won't-they relationship where they flirt a lot but never actually hook up. Also she backstabs the guys and runs off with [object the gang have stolen] a lot! You'd think they'd stop trusting her but whatever.
  • Inspector Zenigata - The Tom to Lupin's Jerry. He's an Interpol agent who tries and constantly fails to catch Lupin. Several episodes (of other series) show that he's actually good at being a cop, he's just not good enough to get Lupin & Co.

Also, if you watched Lupin back in good ol' 2003, this adaptation has the exact same dub cast! Neat! except for Zenigata, he's different

https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=NBYYT1ekkeg

2:30 - Naruto Shippuden
loving END ALREADY

Naruto is a ninja kid from the Hidden Leaf Village who wants to be the very best, like no one ever was. Unfortunately he's got a demon locked up inside him and it seems like a bunch of evil guys want to capture it (and use it for nefarious purposes). Here's where the recap ends because Shippuden starts after a timeskip and Naruto (the original) is like 400 episodes long and I'm not reading the entire Naruto wiki to write a synopsis. Because god knows Shippuden sure doesn't waste any time explaining who old characters are, it just launches right ahead...

Naruto is the current holder of the Adult Swim title belt for "slowest moving program on the block" which is frankly remarkable since Naruto is just goddamn glacial (seriously how do you hit a filler arc only 2 arcs in to your story jfc).

3:00 Death Slot - Ghost In The Shell: Stand Alone Complex
I thought what I'd do was, I'd post one of those anime threads...

Stand Alone Complex is a sequel series to the original 1995 movie Ghost In The Shell. It depicts a world not too far off where humanity has managed to figure this whole robotics thing out flawlessly. Basically every human is some kinda cyborg from having cyber-eyes to having a full cyborg body. Of course, when everyone's a cyborg, law enforcement has to keep one step ahead. Section 9 is Japan's special ops team that fights cyber-terrorists, with an array of enhancements of their own, including adorable talking tanks and occasionally the ability to cloak themselves. The only downside of the series is that occasionally people talk. A lot. There's a lot of philosopizin' on what defines humanity to the point where sometimes things can get boring, but then an explosion happens so don't worry about things getting dull.

3:30 You Should Be Asleep Slot - Samurai Jack
Gotta get back, back to the past

https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=NtgXDiXr-0M

Samurai Jack was a cartoon on Cartoon Network that ran from '01 to '04. It was pretty great, mixing great action with humor and mostly remembered for being stylish as poo poo. I mean, it won an Emmy. ...It still got canned, though. But through some dark magic now it's back 12 years later. Opinions are mixed about how good the season was (in particularly people arguing if the finale sucked or not). If you've never seen the old episodes they're all on Hulu and you should definitely watch them. ALSO this runs at 8:30 PM if you want to catch it then, but I'm listing it here because it's not really "new" anymore. But anyway if you want to know more about the series, here's a featurette/interview with Genndy Tartakovsky talking about the new season:

https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=FT6yhhfiUh8

What's coming this year?

FLCL... season 2? wait what? - coming late 2017 or early 2018
ENGAGE MANGA MODE

FLCL, also known as Fooly Cooly, is a super-weird show about robots, aliens, guitars, vespa motor-scooters, and growing up. Created in 2000, the plot centers around Naota, a young boy stuck in his podunk town who laments that his life is loving boring since his big brother left to go play professional baseball in America :911:. Enter Haruko, a pink-haired manic pixie dream girl who runs over him then hits him on the head with a drat guitar, and turns his life upside down as his head starts sprouting robots and there's all sorts of alien poo poo.

...it's a weird show. It's one of those shows that you either really like or you just don't get, and that's okay.

But wait what's this? Season 2?
"But TwoPair!", you say, "FLCL is but a 6-episode long one-season show!" and you would have been right... until last year. However Toonami is shelling out the dough to coproduce two additional 6-episode seasons with Production I.G.

Reactions are... mixed... ranging from "Wow I'm so excited" to "FLCL was lightning in a bottle and this will be loving garbage" to "I really wish Toonami would've spent that money on Big O season 3" (okay that last opinion was just me) But hey we got several months to wait this out so if you're mad about it, don't worry, I'm sure you'll have forgotten by the time the thing actually comes out.

:siren:UPDATE 7/2: :siren:

They've released a trailer for the FLCL 2 and 3. It reveals pretty much nothing about the plot except a fast bunch of images and hey Haruko's there. Anyway here you go

https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=yhW81Ekacf4

ALSO

Every Saturday night while the more boring shonen shows are on TV, Waffleman or Baal or I dunno who's running it these days is building you a better cartoon show. They it Goonami what nerds amirite. They just post poo poo on Fri/Sat night when they're gonna stream poo poo on Synchtube and you can watch.

MEANWHILE EVERY OTHER DAY OF THE WEEK...

Adult Swim is a block on Cartoon Network that's been running strong now since 2001. It's their late-night offering for grown-ups such as ourselves. This high class stuff includes a show where a guy hosts a parody talk show and pukes on himself and a bunch of Family Guy reruns.

What's on right now?

Decker: Unsealed

Looks to be a big parody of action movies by Tim Heidecker. It's a spinoff of a web show he's been doing on AS's website for a while now. I'm not a fan of Tim (and/or Eric) but hey, maybe you are, and that's okay.

https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=XELKAaCerps

And then there's ummm... reruns of the Fox shows? Nothing else is really premiering at the moment though, at least that I can find...

UPCOMING/RENEWED SHOWS

The Eric Andre Show

Eric Andre is back for the best late night show on television. That's all the summary you loving need, Eric Andre rules, watch this show you cretins.

https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=hn5_TCIK9LY

Unfortunately, the sad passing of Charlie Murphy (played Vic) might affect BJ's return. We'll just have to wait.

Mr. Pickles

Mr. Pickles is a show by two Funny or Die writers and it should have died. The joke is “What if Lassie were a demon hound?” And that's it. It's just awful. If you are watching Mr. Pickles you are a bad person for providing it ratings.

Neon Joe: Werewolf Hunter

Neon Joe is... um... well... hmm. Just watch this:

https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=OYksJUfyxEw

Tim & Eric's Bedtime Stories

I haven't liked anything T&E have done since Tom Goes To The Mayor but if you love the guys, even more good news, apparently there's more Bedtime Stories coming. You know what, I lied, I do like something Tim & Eric have done because in the middle of writing this I remembered Paul Rudd At His Computer exists and I'm just gonna post that

https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=maAFcEU6atk

Rick and Morty

Rick and Morty is basically what would happen if Doc Brown was even smarter, but a raging alcoholic and Marty McFly was his stupid grandson instead of a cool 80s kid. Has its own dedicated thread here. Surprising no one, the show got renewed for a third season, because it loving rules. Watch the show if you haven't already, you're really missing out. rick and morty a hundred years dot com

The Venture Brothers

Well it happened. Season six finally happened. Season seven hasn't been announced but we all know it's happening. Welp, see you all in 10 years! Has its own thread here (link may be/probably is defunct but gently caress you I'm not gonna go to TVIV and find the new VB thread to link it here).

A bunch of other bullshit

AS basically renewed every other show they produce though short of MDE: World Peace so look forward to [YOUR FAVORITE SHOW]. There's still a shitload from this list that's yet to be formally announced so maybe look forward to something from that?

oh and SAO 3 is totally gonna simuldub here you heard it here first.

After Bleach's death (god it feels like so long ago) finally died off, Naruto took the title belt of "slowest moving program on the block" which is frankly remarkable since Naruto is just goddamn glacial (seriously how do you hit a filler arc only 2 arcs in to your story jfc).

In Good News About Bad Boring Anime/Manga: Tite Kubo's bosses finally killed Bleach the Manga execution-style last year, forcing him to end the series in the most rushed and passive-aggressively pissed manner possible. Sadly, the shipper meltdown was nowhere near as amusing as the Naruto one, due to not even hardcore Bleach fans giving a poo poo anymore. Speaking of which, Naruto may be dead, but his dumbass spoiled brat Burrito (and his best friend Salad) was given his own monthly manga. Which continues the fine Naruto tradition of "copy Dragonball, only really badly" by retelling a movie in episodic format for its first arc.

As for Naruto on Toonami... uh... well, a filler arc happened that accomplished literally nothing for any involved party, Tobi was introduced and subsequently ruined by making him a crazy magic eye man, Sasuke finally murdered his brother and will surely Not Do Anything Evil Again Ever, and an unhinged fangirl told Sasuke she's coming.

Yup.

EDIT: Oh, and Sasuke can become Butterfly Aizen now because he ate Doctor Snakes.

oh, and there's one more tiny detail that got left out of this: once One Punch Man finishes up its run in the 0300 rerun slot at the end of January, Toonami's gonna replace it with Ghost in the Shell: Stand-Alone Complex.

It's a series loosely related to the famous 1995 movie, meaning that while it's still primarily about Maj. Kusanagi and Section 9, it's got its own continuity and isn't related to the movie outside of the basic concepts of the setting and characters. If you've never seen any form of GitS before, it's basically Deus Ex: The Anime: lots of stuff about transhumanism, corporate/government conspiracies, cybernetic technologies, and a whole lot of philosophical discussion about what it means to exist and be human in an age of robot bodies and artificial intelligence. The show is structured sorta like a police procedural, except instead of street cops busting drug dealers and homicide perps, it's about GSG9 taking out anti-augmentation terrorists and Russian organ-harvesting/smuggling rings.
