Also Tony Abbott has been on one of those free trips to Israel that all politicians get and now he wants Australia to stop sending aid to Palestine. Which means it will probably happen in like a week or two.

Dozens of poker machines destroyed in fire in Brisbane hotel

A man accused of setting 40 poker machines alight at a hotel south of Brisbane last night is due to face court today.

Firefighters were called to the Royal Hotel in the Logan suburb of Beenleigh about 8:30pm following reports of a fire in the gaming room.

Police said a 25-year-old patron had earlier left the pub but returned with a container of petrol.

It is alleged he poured the petrol over the poker machines, then set them on fire.

Queensland Police Service said three poker machines were destroyed while 37 others were damaged beyond repair from exposure to chemicals.

The Beenleigh man's been charged with endangering particular property by fire.

He is due in the Southport Magistrates Court today.

Federal Health Minister Susan Ley buys Gold Coast flat on taxpayer-funded trip

FEDERAL Health Minister Sussan Ley charged taxpayers thousands of dollars for a trip to Queensland with her husband during which she bought a $795,000 Gold Coast investment property.

Government documents reveal in May 2015, after announcing at Brisbane’s Wesley Hospital $1.3 billion in funding to list new medicines and vaccines, Ms Ley went to the affluent suburb of Main Beach.

She billed taxpayers $370 on her travel allowance to stay the night on the Gold Coast with her partner, on the same day she bought the ocean-view apartment.

Ms Ley confirmed to the Herald Sun the property was bought during the trip, which she declared was for “official business”.

She said the apartment purchase “was not planned nor anticipated”.

“All travel undertaken was in accordance with the rules,” a spokeswoman for Ms Ley said.

Ms Ley’s office would not confirm whether the investment property had been negatively geared.

Her office also refused to say whether $268.30 for chauffeur services, which was also charged to taxpayers, had been used by the couple to travel the 80km to Main Beach.

Ms Ley’s spokeswoman said the couple had travelled to the Gold Coast because the minister had “stakeholders to meet with”.

Ms Ley’s office would not provide the Herald Sun with a list of these people.

Ms Ley’s spokeswoman said the minister’s partner had been invited to accompany her to a function in Sydney the previous evening.

“He then travelled with the minister to Queensland under family travel arrangements.

“The EMB (Entitlements Management Branch) was consulted at the time to confirm Ms Ley’s partner’s travel was within the rules,” she said.

One source told the Herald Sun that Ms Ley’s partner negotiated the sale.

In total, the couple claimed a sum of $3949 in flights for the 48-hour trip.

A code of conduct states ministers must not use their office for private purposes and “due economy is to be observed at all times”.

The Herald Sun recently revealed Ms Ley spent more than $12,000 chartering a private jet to fly to the Gold Coast for a meeting last year.

It is less than a week since the Federal Government moved to restrict access to the aged pension for 300,000 older Australians.

One Nation chaos: website static and staff quitting

Pauline Hanson’s One Nation party has been unable to update the body of its website since October last year when a key figure in the organisation, Saraya Beric, was pushed out, stunning even diehard One Nation loyalists.

The young Brisbane woman turned her hand from playing the violin for a living to running Senator Hanson’s online and social media strategy during last year’s federal election campaign. She worked 16-hour days to manage the party’s Albion headquarters on a shoestring. Loyalty? It runs only one way in One Nation, Ms Beric complained yesterday, speaking publicly of her disillusionment with Ms Hanson.

The dysfunction behind the scenes has also hit the office of NSW senator Brian Burston, whose former personal assistant Diana Allen unloaded to The Australian yesterday. Party co-founder David Ettridge and former president and national treasurer Ian Nelson continue to take potshots at Senator Hanson and her high-profile lieutenant, James Ashby.

This was capped by the altercation on Tuesday outside a Perth court in which former One Nation senator Rod Culleton claims to have been assaulted by ex-state Liberal parliamentarian Anthony Fels, who wants to contest a seat in the March 11 West Australian election for One Nation. Police are investigating the incident that left Senator Culleton nursing bruises and a sprained wrist.

The One Nation website has not been updated since August 15 because, Ms Beric said, the offices of the three remaining senators did not pass on news to party headquarters. Only two of the 36 candidates introduced recently by Senator Hanson for a Queensland election expected this year have their profiles up.

Ms Beric, 32, resigned her office-bearer positions as national and Queensland secretary on October 13 last year and was locked out of the site but with the know-how to run it. The page templates and codes to update it were “all in my head”, she said yesterday, breaking her silence about the drama inside the Hanson camp.

She emphasised that she did not “spit the dummy”, but the situation had become untenable.

She was told that her authorisation to do any other work as a fulltime contractor had been withdrawn, and she should leave what she was doing to get the party registered for the WA election.

“I am disappointed at the treatment of some people in the party,” she said. “I am disappointed that the party seems to have swayed away from its principles and values, but there are some great candidates still involved and I hope that they will stay true to themselves and the Australian people.”

Diana Allen lasted only seven weeks in Senator Burston’s office, and said she quit after claiming the chief-of-staff referred to her as a “petulant princess”.

“That’s not how you talk to a woman of 50,” she said from her Lane Cove home in Sydney.

Senator Hanson hit back yesterday at Mr Nelson and Ms Beric, saying they had “their noses out of joint” through missing out on jobs following the election. She agreed she had been a friend of 66-year-old Mr Nelson — though not a close one — and that he had approached her to rejoin the party when it was revived in 2013. “He has just turned and is basically a lonely man,” Senator Hanson said. “One Nation was basically his whole life. He has no one in his life and now that he has lost this, he has … become bitter and nasty. I’ve got no time for him.”

As for Ms Beric, who worked 16-hour days during the election for a gross salary of $800 a week, Senator Hanson said: “Saraya was vying for a job in the parliamentary office, which I told her she wasn’t capable of doing.”

Ms Beric disputed this yesterday. After Senator Hanson asked her to set aside her music career, she became “Jacky of all trades” in One Nation, managing the office in Brisbane, taking on the roles of IT fixer, candidate manager during the election as well as social media manager and office-bearer.

When Mr Nelson went into bat for her to get a raise, Mr Ashby offered to increase her pay to $50,000 a year. Mr Nelson said this was insulting; forthright discussions with Senator Hanson ensued.

Ms Beric said, however, that Senator Hanson never spoke to her about a new role and she had not sought one on the parliamentary staff.

She had wanted to focus on marketing and online work. “Pauline just sent James to talk to me,” Ms Beric said. “If she was told I wanted a job with her, that was not the case. She has not bothered to have a conversation with me.”

Mr Nelson said: “I was disgusted by how Saraya was treated and told them so. I couldn’t stand how the place was being run, and I’m not the only one.”

The man who replaced Ms Beric as office manager and Mr Nelson as treasurer, Senator Hanson’s brother-in-law Greg Smith, said he couldn’t say why they had severed their links with the party.

Mr Nelson handed in his membership card last August, ending a 20-year association with One Nation in which he also served as state director of the pivotal Queensland division.

“It’s the same for any business: if you lose people they have to be replaced,” Mr Smith said. “That’s just the nature of the business. People leave for many reasons.”

Ms Allen said she had worked for media companies and top corporates including Leighton Contractors, Siemens and Honeywell Group, and was appalled by the chaos in One Nation.

Embattled Health Minister Sussan Ley under fire over partner’s Gold Coast business

THE Future of embattled Health Minister Sussan Ley is in further doubt with the discovery that her partner owns a Gold Coast business close to where she purchased a unit while on a taxpayer funded trip.

Ms Ley’s role as federal Health Minister has been under a cloud since the Herald Sun revealed she purchased a $795,000 Main Beach apartment from a Liberal donor during a taxpayer-funded trip with her partner.

The Sunday Herald Sun can now reveal that Ms Ley’s partner Graham Johnston owns a central Gold Coast franchise of Its Bin Cleaned.

ASIC records reveal Mr Johnston is the sole director and shareholder of Albury-based Highmark Pty Limited, which is listed as the holder of the central Gold Coast It’s Bin Cleaned franchise.

A spokesman for Ms Ley yesterday said Highmark Pty Ltd had always been declared on Ms Ley’s register of interest and no business relating to the company had ever been undertaken by Mr Johnston while on taxpayer funded visits to the Gold Coast.

“Any business that is transacted by Ms Ley’s partner is done so by telephone, from Albury, they said.

The Opposition said the latest revelation further eroded Ms Ley’s claim the unit purchase was “not planned nor anticipated”.

“Sussan Ley is trying to play the Australian people like fools and say this was not a planned purchase — but this new information makes a complete mockery of that,” Opposition Health spokeswoman Catherine King said.

“It couldn’t be clearer. Sussan Ley needs to stand up and explain this or Malcolm Turnbull must enforce his own ministerial standards and sack her from the front bench.

“These are serious allegations and her failure to address them treats the public with nothing but contempt.

“The longer this goes on the longer Malcolm Turnbull is unacceptably turning a blind eye to his own ministerial standards.”

ASIC records lists Mr Johnston’s franchise’s place of business as Unit 5, Yachting Towers Start, 16-18 Macarthur Pde Main Beach, a near neighbour of her new unit.

It’s Bin Cleaned’s website says it offers “professional, reliable and affordable bin cleaning specialising in domestic wheelie bin cleaning, commercial wheelie bin cleaning and all sizes of industrial front loading bins” on the Gold Coast and Sydney.

In 2015 Ms Ley and Mr Johnston told The Australian they met at a pub. “Sussan asked what I did and I told her I was a bin cleaner,” he laughed. “He runs a bin cleaning business,” she added quickly.

Ms Ley has electoral offices in Albury and Griffiths has travelled to or via the Gold Coast on at least six occasions.

A Government code of conduct states ministers must not use their office for private purposes and “due economy is to be observed at all times”.

When she purchased her Gold Coast investment property in May 2015, Ms Ley charged taxpayers $3949 in flights for the 48-hour “official business” trip with Mr Johnston.

After announcing $1.3 million in funding to list new medicines and vaccines at Brisbane’s Wesley Hospital Ms Ley and her husband travelled 80km to the Gold Coast.

The Minister’s office claimed Ms Ley went to the Gold Coast to meet “patients about access to new medicines” but refused to name them or say whether a $268.30 charge to taxpayers for a chauffeur service was used by the couple to travel from the Gold Coast.

Ms Ley’s spokeswoman said Mr Johnston had been invited to accompany her to a function in Sydney the previous evening and then travelled with her to Queensland under family travel arrangements.

Ms Ley’s office says she spends an average of 20 nights away from home each month, “so under ministerial and family travel arrangements Ms Ley’s partner, on occasion, joins her when permitted by the rules.”

Embattled Health Minister Sussan Ley apologises for apartment splurge

EMBATTLED Health Minister Sussan Ley billed taxpayers for airfares and taxis to help ring in the New Year on the Gold Coast for two consecutive years.

Pressure is now mounting on Ms Ley to resign or be sacked after she was yesterday forced to issue an embarrassing apology for her “error of judgment” in using ministerial travel to the Gold Coast to buy a lavish apartment with her partner.

She said her impulse decision to buy the property during a taxpayer-funded trip did not meet Prime Minister Malcolm Turnbull’s expectations.

The Herald Sun can now reveal Ms Ley also billed the taxpayer for two jaunts to the Gold Coast for New Year’s Eve celebrations.

But she again refused to answer questions about what “official business” she was on and who she was meeting during the New Year’s Eve trips, with the Opposition calling for her to be sacked.

The scandal engulfing the Minister could grow further as the Finance Department has been asked to probe all of Ms Ley’s ministerial travel to the Gold Coast — where she owns property and her partner runs a bin cleaning business.

Revelations about Ms Ley’s extravagant spending could not come at a worse time for the Turnbull Government as it struggles to fix the Centrelink debt-collecting debacle, while cutting pensions from more 300,000 elderly Australians.

During her first New Year’s Eve trip in 2013, Ms Ley claimed $575 when she flew to the Gold Coast from Albury on December 30.

She also used her cabcharge allowance four times in Queensland during the December 30 to 31 holiday period, costing the public purse more than $335.

Ms Ley returned to the Gold Coast for New Year’s Eve again in 2014, claiming two $269 flights for herself and a family member from Coolangatta to Sydney on January 1.

Taxpayers did not cover any accommodation costs for the New Year’s Eve jaunts.

The Herald Sun can also reveal Ms Ley travelled to the Gold Coast at least 17 times between 2013 and 2016, costing taxpayers more than $40,000.

The Herald Sun has attempted to cross reference all Ms Ley’s Gold Coast trips with her parliamentary and ministerial duties — public appearances, media events, press releases, speeches and meetings — but could not find evidence of any “official business” on at least nine occasions.

Those trips alone cost taxpayers more than $20,000.

But a spokesman for Ms Ley said that the Minister undertakes “extensive meetings with doctors, patients and other organisations” and just because there was no media release or speech on the public record it didn’t mean there was no justification for the trip.

He also said the focus on the Gold Coast was “misleading” because Ms Ley travelled to Sydney and Melbourne more than 50 times during the same period.

Opposition health spokeswoman Catherine King again called for her resignation, saying there was no credible explanation for taxpayer-funded trips to the Gold Coast on weekends and holidays.

“These revelations make it crystal clear that Malcolm Turnbull must sack Sussan Ley,” Ms King said.

“Ley has violated every tenet of Malcolm Turnbull’s own ministerial standards. Either she must walk or Mr Turnbull must push her.”

Some examples of Ms Ley’s trips to the Gold Coast include a four night stay in July 2014 when taxpayers forked out $4388 in travel costs for Ms Ley and a family member and a weekend trip in September 2014 totalling more than $2000.

As a shadow minister Ms Ley also spent four nights on the Gold Coast at a cost of $3352 in March 2013.

The following month she returned to the Gold Coast with a family member billing taxpayers for flights, taxis, car hire and chauffeur driven cars totalling $3594.

In May 2013, Ms Ley again returned to the Gold Coast for “official business” with a family member claiming $2907 in flights and travel allowance claims.

In a statement released yesterday, the Health Minister said she had examined her records and identified two claims for accommodation on the Gold Coast in 2014 and 2015 where she now believes she should have “stayed and claimed in Brisbane”.

She also said a flight taken in June 2015 from Coolangatta to Canberra should not have been charged to taxpayers.

The apology comes just days after the Herald Sun revealed Ms Ley purchased a $795,000 apartment on the Gold Coast during a taxpayer-funded work trip.

Ms Ley apologised for the “error of judgment” and said she had spoken to Mr Turnbull who agreed that it didn’t meet “the high standards he expects of Ministers”.

Senators and MPs are allowed to use taxpayer-funded hire cars, chauffeur-driven Comcars or taxis for parliamentary business such as “informing constituents about issues” and attending meetings.

Sussan Ley looked at Gold Coast property before buying ‘on a whim’

SIDELINED health minister Sussan Ley used a taxpayer-funded trip to inspect a Gold Coast property nine months before the 2015 purchase of a luxury apartment she said had been unplanned, vendors claim.

The Herald Sun can reveal Ms Ley made an unsuccessful bid on a property in 2014, before later billing the taxpayer thousands of dollars in airfares, accommodation and taxi fares for the trip.

Ms Ley stood down on Monday from the ministry pending two investigations of her taxpayer-funded Gold Coast trips, and the latest revelations put her future in further doubt.

Her ministerial colleagues now believe she will struggle to return to the front bench, as the government moves to fast-track reforms of parliamentary entitlements instigated after the scandal over the then-Speaker Bronwyn Bishop’s helicopter flight to Geelong in late 2014.

Ms Ley, who has agreed to partly reimburse taxpayers for four trips to the Gold Coast, maintained on Monday that “no rules were broken”.

But the Albury-based MP’s troubles could worsen after retired couple Adrienne and Stewart McEachran came forward to claim that she and her partner, Graham Johnston, inspected their home in Advancetown, in the Gold Coast hinterland, in late August and on September 8 in 2014.

Government documents reveal that Ms Ley billed taxpayers more than $2000 in travel costs for a long weekend on the Gold Coast from September 5 to 8, 2014.

The costs included $720 for two nights of travel allowance, more than $1000 in flights to and from Coolangatta, and $271 for a hire car.

Ms Ley refused to answer queries on the latest claims.

Ms McEachran said of Ms Ley: “She was friendly and obviously looking to purchase something. She must have been impressed enough that she came back.”

The couple said that in October, Ms Ley made an offer that was about $50,000 below the mid-$700,000 asking price, and they declined.

The couple, both in their late 70s, sold the property for a better price shortly after.

Prime Minister Malcolm Turnbull asked Ms Ley to stand aside without ministerial pay until her travel claims had been probed by the secretary of the Department of Prime Minister and Cabinet. The Department of Finance will also review her work trips to the Gold Coast.

A defiant Ms Ley faced the media on Monday for the first time since the Herald Sun revealed she purchased a lavish ocean-view apartment during a taxpayer-funded work trip.

“I’m very confident that the investigations will demonstrate that no rules were broken whatsoever,” Ms Ley said.

“I recognise that for people who live in my electorate, who work hard, who understand about living on fixed incomes and have experienced a life I’ve experienced in the past, this has a look that I don’t understand those issues. The opposite is the case.”

Ms Ley also defended trips she made to the Gold Coast on consecutive New Year’s Eves, for which taxpayers covered some of the costs, saying she travelled “at the invitation of a prominent Queensland businesswoman” — believed to be Liberal donor Sarina Russo.

Cabinet secretary Arthur Sinodinos will handle Ms Ley’s portfolios. The inquiry should be over by the time parliament resumes on February 7.

Acting Opposition Leader Penny Wong said the PM’s response was “weak”.
