SuperMechagodzilla posted:They also pulled a reverse-Matrix and changed the dominant colour scheme from green to blue. That was actually with the 25th anniversary edition not the 1979 rerelease but it is a shame. Older dvds lack the blue tint.

SuperMechagodzilla posted:Right - and neither version is green. but you just said the 1979 version did the blue tint from this hypothetical green version. Which version was the original DVD going off of?

SuperMechagodzilla posted:All the DVD releases are (to my knowledge) derived on the 1979 version, which is brighter than the 1973 version and has a 'naturalistic' colour scheme. No noticeable tint. Where did you read about this? I've always preferred the pre-98 color timing but I was under the impression that was more or less the original, all I can find about the '79 rerelease differences are the matte for widescreen and the sound mix

K. I finally saw Fast Company recently, that one's a lot of fun. I loved Maps to the Stars (although, yeah, probably not as much as Cosmopolis). I owe it a rewatch now that Carrie Fisher died.

Fifteen of Many posted:I've heard a few places that the use of songs in Suicide Squad is bad. Could anyone elucidate on a few examples of what makes selection and use in that film particularly egregious and provide a counter example of good use of songs in film? I'd like to understand more about the craft behind selecting tracks. They're almost all just very obvious and on-the-nose choices ("introducing an Australian criminal? Let's use Dirty Deeds by AC/DC!" etc.) Goodfellas is probably the best example for great song curation in film.

Coffee And Pie posted:I was thinking the same thing, esp the Layla scene and the prison scene where they make dinner the way the songs subtly track the passage in time and change in outlook is particularly well done. back to Suicide Squad, the way it cycles so quickly between licensed songs in the early going also accentuates how poorly edited that whole endless opening montage is.

X-Ray Pecs posted:poo poo, Scorsese in general is great at using licensed songs. I love the use of Devo's Satisfaction in Casino, that beat really adds a herky-jerky energy to the movie. The way Goodfellas starts out with Tony Bennett and Dean Martin and ends with Harry Nillson, Sid Vicious, and Altamont-era Stones is a great storytelling device in and of itself. He got a little carried away with Wolf of Wall Street though.

X-Ray Pecs posted:Didn't he even have a Me First and the Gimme Gimmes somewhere in there? That soundtrack is probably one of the few times I'd tell Scorsese to tone it down a bit. I think the Me First song actually works in context (a snotty pop-punk Beach Boys cover kinda feels like the mode Scorsese was working in), but the Foo Fighters cue feels very out of place and that awful Lemonheads cover of Mrs. Robinson is just like, no, why are you doing this?

Neil Young's Harvest over the nostalgic mid-film flashback and Any Day Now by Chuck Jackson over the end credits are also great.
