Civil Wars will be quite rare. Get a vasall trade republic for sizable fleets and lots of money. Mobility via Ships is big, retinues are a big force multiplier if used properly. The combat system is kind of counterintuitive, often a pure retinue selects better tactics then a much larger mixed force and thus kicks rear end.
