I think there's no realistic way the autofiller could ensure that all fields are visible+obvious to the user, so may as well just have the autofill bring up a prompt saying 'about to fill these fields: <bulleted list>, look good?'

Then at least a user has an opportunity to think 'why does it want to fill in my address wtf'

I mean that does zero protection against someone clicking through and maybe the real solution is to have the user just type that poo poo in but there you go

You're just training the user to hit the enter key after doing an autofill without reading what it says.

Assuming they're even aware of this, which they're likely not.

Sounds like the opposite; starting it manually to see what it does would result in nothing if "true" was the expected value here.

I suspect this is a check to short-circuit similar to RunningInVMAndApplicationOlderThan5Days to prevent 'dev' builds (built after the hard-coded feb 2015 date) executing automatically. It's a way to pin auto-execution to only code that has (presumably) been tested to work in the build-test vm framework and prevent auto-execution for newer code, though it's a really wacky way it do it. I could see doing it this way if you have some sort of framework that you use for both development of new features and testing of the operation of mature ones, and your build system inserts that date into the code based on last tested-good configuration (or you alter it manually).

Same. With the auto incrementing build numbers, this smells of someone being too clever by half.

my understanding was that they really care a lot about pirated copies not appearing before your legit customers get their hands on the officially released version. long-tail sales have always been pretty garbage in comparison to launch day for aaa games, so you really don't want pirates cutting into those launch day sales

after that who really cares, but it's not like you're going to spend actual money on patching out drm later, since that gives you literally no benefit

Pretty much this. If you can delay a crack appearing for a week, you've forced someone who wants to play but would have gotten a pirated version into buying it (assuming that this person wants to play it so much that they'll pay money)

Then there's this:

http://www.gamasutra.com/view/feature/3030/keeping_the_pirates_at_bay.php posted:

Two months may not seem like a long time, but between 30 and 50 percent of most games' total sales occur in that time. Approximately 50 percent of the total sales of Spyro 2, up to December 2000, were in the first two months. Even games released in the middle of the year rather than the holiday season, such as Eidetic's Syphon Filter, make 30 percent of their total sales in the first two months. If YOTD follows the same trend, as it almost certainly will, those two to three months when pirated versions were unavailable must have reduced the overall level and impact of piracy. On top of this, since YOTD was released in Europe one month after the U.S., those two months protected early European sales from pirated copies of the U.S. version.

The article is pretty great if you haven't seen it yet. No idea how well this holds up in 2017, but it definitely used to be true.
