I think I preferred it when they were playing a sport that just happened to feature some people who took weapons onto the field, rather than a sport where everyone was carrying a punch-dagger and wearing inch thick half-plate.

The rules aren't that bad, the hard part is learning the risk management. The rare fringe-case interactions don't come up that often unless someone is playing bizarro mutant chaos or vampires. Orcs are a traditionally good option. As ever, playing with people who know what they're doing and asking questions is generally the best way. There's quite a lot of video out there of games talked over by people of varying quality. There's also been a few lets plays done on the forums, cKnoor, GnuOrder and I think a tournament style one (or was that fumbbl?) that are probably still hosted somewhere.

Terra was described as having trillions of people in some of the early fluff. It's standard sense-of-scale poo poo. Saying that, you probably could efficiently pack a billion people in a spire if it was ~ a half dozen km high and a few dozen across the base. If you could keep the structure up, the inside oxygenated and otherwise environmentally controlled and the population fed and watered.

They need to make it smoother/more clearly balanced/less-swingy, but not over simplify or complicate it, and they can't crib so much from the flight path system that they end up with legal implications or bad press. It's a non-trivial piece of game design.

Not having read the rules: I assume an armour save is made in response to a success on a wound roll? If the wound roll never happens then it would never generate a success to cause it.
