Regardless of which route you take- backup only the stuff you might upload to a second HDD somewhere, and wipe the laptop. You can spend all day wringing your hands about uploading the comic or whatever, but it sounds like a ton of non related material is on there as well that you frankly have no business rooting around in. Was the laptop even password protected at all? Pull the comic to a secondary source and wipe it.
