quote:

Venezuelans, dear brothers: we talk as the State
We are a coalition of military, police, and civilians
In the search of balance and opposing this transitional criminal government
We are not and do not have any political tendency
We are patriots, nationalist, and institutionalists
This combat is not against the rest of the State security forces
It is against the impunity imposed by this government
It is against tyranny
It is against the deaths of the youths that fight for their legitimate right
It is against hunger and lack of healthcare
It is against fanaticism
This fight is for life, this fight is for the hope we build
It is not vengeance but justice that drives us to make the change
We use this distinction with the color of veracity and Jesus Christ is with us
This is the reason we make a call to all Venezuelans, from east to west, from north to south, to accompany us in this force of fight, and go out to the streets in Caracas
And in the interior of the country, to each military base
To find us again as brothers.

reminds me of early syrian civil war stuff tbh

i cant see this ending in anything but civil war unless the revolt is quickly defeated or the news is overblown tbh. the gov has armed the gently caress out of its supporters essentially creating a massive militia and the upper echelons of the military are very progov. if there is in fact a mutiny from large segments of the military things are going to get extremely bad very quickly.

i used to be extremely defensive of the chavez gov but maduro's insistence on holding onto power despite losing almost all popular support and a completely collapsed economy could only lead to one outcome and now we're seeing it. would have been much smarter to simply accept actual elections and operate as opposition for awhile

Good morning and blessings to all Venezuela.

I'm Captain Juan Caguaripano commander of the David Carabobo Operation.

I am accompanied by the 41st brigade, I am accompanied by officers and troops of this glorious unit of the true Venezuelan army forger of freedom, as well as active and reserve troops of all the police components.

Men and women brave lovers of peace and freedom, we declare ourselves in legitimate rebelliousness, united today more than ever with the brave Venezuelan people to repudiate the murderous tyranny of Nicolas Maduro.

We clarify that this is not a coup d'etat this is a civil and military action to re-establish the constitutional order, but more to save the country from total destruction, to stop the murders of our young people and relatives.

As institutional military members, we recognize and respect the National Assembly (It's like Venezuelan congress) but we demand that it recognize and respect the will of the people to get rid of the tyranny, and honor the heroic memory of young people like Neymar, Geraldin, Fernalete, (Venezuelan who died during the protests) and others, that with shields of paperboard but with hearts of steel offered their lives to teach the venezuelan people how to defeat the fear.

Gentlemen of the National Assembly, it's time to stop hidden agreements between tyrants and traitors. We need honest politicians that aren't corrupt and that won't betray the venezuelan people.

We demand the immediate formation of a government of transition. And free general elections with independent public powers, we ask our brother-in-arms to rise up against this murderous regime and to disobey corrupt generals who do not represent the honor or dignity of our armed force, do not be the shame of our family, we invite All venezuela to go to the barracks to join us in this liberating party. And to receive, in a peaceful and orderly way, the citizens of your locality, where hostile activity against the civilian population will be considered a military objective, and we'll go against it with all the firepower of our allied forces throughout the country, Venezuela, God is with us. And from today live the freedom and the tyranny dies.

the weird thing is its not like lula was really that bad for the rich. he was ultimately pretty drat neoliberal. yet they cant even allow his relatively modest welfare programs for the poor to the point theyre willing to risk totally delegitimizing everything and leaving the people no choice but violence, riots, revolution. how loving stupid.

Sheng-Ji Yang
Mar 5, 2014

yeah i guess their ultimate goal is the restoration of the military dictatorship, and popular revolt could justify that. thats the only thing that makes sense.

SÃO BERNARDO DO CAMPO, Brazil — Ringed by supporters shouting “no surrender!” ahead of a possible showdown with law enforcement, former President Luiz Inácio Lula da Silva of Brazil defied a 5 p.m. deadline Friday to report to prison to begin serving his sentence for a corruption conviction.

Hundreds of supporters — many are union members, students and land rights activists — have been camped outside the ABC Steelworkers Union, where Lula got his start in politics, since the order for his incarceration was handed down Thursday.

"Caravans from all over the state are arriving to defend President Lula," Vagner Freitas, president of the national Unified Workers Central union, known as CUT, told cheering demonstrators gathered outside the steelworkers union. "We are here, and if they want to remove Lula from here, they'll have to take us all with him."

Lula spent Thursday night in the union building, where he met with his legal team and fellow members of the Workers' Party, including former President Dilma Rousseff, former Sao Paulo Mayor Fernando Haddad and party leader Gleisi Hoffmann.

Supporters of ex-Brazilian President Luis Inácio Lula da Silva have stopped him surrendering to police after he agreed to end a stand-off over his prison sentence.

Scores of them blocked his car leaving the trade union building near Sao Paulo where he has been staying.

Bolsonaro is quite already burned in the foreign press, particularly by some interviews he has given to documentaries and long reads from The Guardian and the like

he isn't some brilliant mastermind, guy is riding the wave that the moment allows him but he has literally no political machine to back him up and do groundwork, not to mention he is a PR disaster and doesn't control the party he is in (which leads to a lot of infighting)

besides he would lose points with his base if suddenly he started looking capable of being reasonable

not a huge maduro fan but all these articles calling him a Unelected Dictator after winning 70% of the vote in an election with only slightly lower turnout than American elections, where the candidate with less votes won, are pretty funny.

quote:

The Trump administration held secret meetings with rebellious military officers from Venezuela over the last year to discuss their plans to overthrow President Nicolás Maduro, according to American officials and a former Venezuelan military commander who participated in the talks.

Establishing a clandestine channel with coup plotters in Venezuela was a big gamble for Washington, given its long history of covert intervention across Latin America. Many in the region still deeply resent the United States for backing previous rebellions, coups and plots in countries like Cuba, Nicaragua, Brazil and Chile, and for turning a blind eye to the abuses military regimes committed during the Cold War.

The White House, which declined to answer detailed questions about the talks, said in a statement that it was important to engage in “dialogue with all Venezuelans who demonstrate a desire for democracy” in order to “bring positive change to a country that has suffered so much under Maduro.”

But one of the Venezuelan military commanders involved in the secret talks was hardly an ideal figure to help restore democracy: He is on the American government’s own sanctions list of corrupt officials in Venezuela.

He and other members of the Venezuelan security apparatus have been accused by Washington of a wide range of serious crimes, including torturing critics, jailing hundreds of political prisoners, wounding thousands of civilians, trafficking drugs and collaborating with the Revolutionary Armed Forces of Colombia, or FARC, which is considered a terrorist organization by the United States.

American officials eventually decided not to help the plotters, and the coup plans stalled. But the Trump administration’s willingness to meet several times with mutinous officers intent on toppling a president in the hemisphere could backfire politically.

Most Latin American leaders agree that Venezuela’s president, Mr. Maduro, is an increasingly authoritarian ruler who has effectively ruined his country’s economy, leading to extreme shortages of food and medicine. The collapse has set off an exodus of desperate Venezuelans who are spilling over borders, overwhelming their neighbors.

Even so, Mr. Maduro has long justified his grip on Venezuela by claiming that Washington imperialists are actively trying to depose him, and the secret talks could provide him with ammunition to chip away at the region’s nearly united stance against him.

“This is going to land like a bomb” in the region, said Mari Carmen Aponte, who served as the top diplomat overseeing Latin American affairs in the final months of the Obama administration.
