As we bid farewell to 20123456 and look ahead to 2017, we need a place to keep track of the absolute best--and worst--that professional wrestling has had to offer us. Please use this thread to highlight wrestling you think people need to go out of their way to see. I'd like to try something differently this year, something less formal and more of a discussion. This isn't about trying to find the Match of the Year but for everyone to share matches they enjoyed and talk about why and maybe expand your horizons

RULES:

1) Provide links if you can! Don't link to torrents we still have rules against :filez: but links to youtube, dailymotion, and russian video hosting are more than ok. I trust your judgement

2) Don't deliberately stifle discussion. If you thought something sucked explain why. If someone puts effort into voicing why they didn't like something dont call them a fun-hating contrarian

Also to get this out of the way now

NJPW Wrestlekingdom 11:

Top four matches were all good as hell, looking back i liked the jr championship match the most. It was wild and crazy like all big Hiromu matches and I love that vibe. KUSHIDA made for a a great base for all of this and if New Japan wanted to they could really make something special with these two as rivals. If you would like to scope these out subscribe to New Japan World or idk they're probably all over Dailymotion by now

CMLL 1/6:

If you have even a passing interest in lucha or getting into it this could very well wind up the best card CMLL puts on in 2017. CMLL is always a surprise like that any given show could be best or worst of the year

https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=UamA9SmaqsM
https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=TKH4wZIQf4E
https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=Sumb0vs7bxE
https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=CNZVxNbafVE

Volador Jr vs Mephisto is probably the easiest one to get into. Lots of flips, big bumps, hot crowd. I think I liked it the least of the three though, Volador's style feels like too much at times and Mephisto is very formuliac. Rey Cometa and Cavernario always deliver together and went for the same vibe as Vol/Meph but stay in that sweet spot and didn't go overboard.

Big Japan 1/2:

STRONG BJ (Daisuke Sekimoto and Yuji Okabayashi) and TWIN TOWERS (Shuji Ishikawa and Kohei Sato) had one of my favorite feuds a couple years ago and they are back again with another great tag team match. Kohei and Shuji just embody big mean dudes and Sekimoto selling that holds this match together and pays off huge with an amazing finish. This is on the Real Hero Archive but I don't know how kosher direct links to that is. Google it. Bookmark it. I'm going to bring it up a lot this year.

It's a pretty famous show, but I recently rewatched Clash of the Champions XVII on the network and it owned. If you want to get into the early 90s bit in WCW where business was totally in the shitter but the TV product was mostly great, this is a really good place to start. Even stuff on the undercard that looks awful like Stunning Steve vs. PN News is entertaining (Steve makes News look about as good as you could possibly get PN News to look).

Main events were Dustin Rhodes/Mystery partner v. Arn Anderson/Larry Zybysko, in a match which had one of the least disappointing mystery partners of all time, and could act as a textbook for how to sell as a babyface in a tag match (I loved JR on commentary pretty much admitting that 1991 WCW had sucked up to this point, saying something like "It's been a long time since we've had a crowd as hot as this one"). Rude/Sting was the main, which was a good match combined with a fantastic angle. WCW had nothing going into this show and it had a Sting v. Rude/Paul E. program that looked red hot, and a big babyface return. I'm probably going to end up watching the WCWSNs after this, because I ended up really wanting to see where the Sting/Rude program went.

I recently watched that tag match when I was watching lots of Arn tags and it is very good so I'll second the nomination.

I love Arn tags and I wish that Arn/Larry Z team had lasted longer. Larry's just one of the best heels ever, he's completely unconcerned about looking cool (one of the biggest problems with WWE heels) or badass. He's just a loving rear end in a top hat. He's the guy in a red BMW who cuts you off on the freeway.

Is it possible to link to a specific timestamp in a show on the RealHero archive? They tend to post long shows as one big file so it'd be cool to point people to specific times for matches.

So since there's no Dragon Gate to rec for the next week or so, howabout people check out Toryumon's El Numero Uno 2003 tournament?

Part I - https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=w80q-AUI0-k
Part II - https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=q7S7SAaVZEM

One of my favorite shows ever, it has some great show long storytelling with the dual stories of CIMA (wins lol) overcoming previous injuries and babyfacing his way to victory, parallel to Genki Horiguchi upsetting two of Toryumon's biggest stars with Backslide victories over Magnum Tokyo and Mochizuki. All the tournament matches are fun to watch and the final match is a legit awesome MOTYC (for 2003). The dumb clusterfuck matches at the beginning and the semi-final are fun enough to.

poo poo yeah. Inundate me with old school Toryumon if you have more. Here's a 2001 clusterfuck tag I like:

9-Man Trios Triple Threat:
CIMA/Fuji/SUWA vs Darkness Dragon/Mochizuki/Kanda vs Dragon Kid/Magnum TOKYO/Ryo Saito

poo poo quality (380p) but what do you want, it was the early days of streaming online video. Watch it on your phone or something. If nothing else, watch the spot that gets set up around 12:45 and pays off around 15 seconds later.

It's useless.
Just watched one of those WrestleJam Dragon Gate shows from 2008 and it had an awesome rumble with the last two people being Pac and El Generico. Generico won and went on to face Yoshino who I believe at the time was the Open the Brave Gate champ. Super underrated match.

Super fun match. So weird seeing all these old guys looking young and fresh. One of the things I like about Toryumon over modern Dragon Gate is that it feels a lot looser and wilder.

I got the Toryumon vs. T2P show from August of 2002:

Part II - https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=VtmpLxT2ZKE

Whole card is excellent, but notable matches are Ultimo Dragon's first match in several years, returning from a botched surgery against Mochizuki, which starts around the 1 hour and 50 minute mark of the first video, and the 2/3 falls mask match between Dragon Kid and Darkness Dragon at around the 1 hour and 15 minute mark of the second video.

I am not done the whole second show but the wwe uk tourney has been so fun and enjoyable to watch. And also dunne v mandrews was moty caliber.

So I meant to post this after I saw it last year, but I thought 'ach, it's a wee Glaswegian wrestling school, it's not on YouTube', but then I found that it was on YouTube long after the match had passed, so, welp.

Okay. So. The Purge is a tag team consisting of Stevie James and Krobar. They used to have another dude named Joseph Vane in the team, but I guess he left the company or something, because I can't find anything about him anywhere. I'm not entirely sure of their gimmick, but Stevie James is basically Not Adam Cole and Krobar is this awesome hoss. Their opponents are the New Age Kliq, BT Gunn and Chris Renfrew, and they've been the Pro Wrestling Elite Tag Team Champions since July. Now, as I mentioned, the GPWA is a wee Glaswegian wrestling school, so they don't have any belts, but since the Purge was really shaping up I guess the NAK decided to give them a title shot. Here's the match.

https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=1o9s9DVP7Ro

This match goes back and forth so loving much, it's incredible. The NAK were over by default because they're in Glasgow, but they worked heel and the Purge really came off strong here as babyface underdogs. I was behind them the whole way, and they had a rematch at the next GPWA show which was even better. (Not on YouTube though, unfortunately.)

Lots of really fun matches this show but dunne/bate was just on a whole different level in the ring and emotionally. Really great stuff I'm begging for more Saturday morning wrestling

UK Tourney Finals, watch it. Do it. I don't watch nearly as much as I used to, but you guys should be doing that.

The UK Tourney was great, loved the ending. Really recommend watching both nights or at the very least all of night 2. They set the stage really well for an ongoing show.

It's useless.
Got myself a Progress subscription and I can give an easy recommendation to Chapter 39. Pretty much liked every match but check out Riddle vs Ospreay, Havoc vs Scurll, and the 7 man scramble main event.

You know whats a great match that nobody really talks about anymore? Toshiaki Kawada vs Kensuke Sasaki at the 9/10/00 NJPW VS AJPW DO JUDGE!! show. Its 20 minutes of two hosses kick loving the poo poo out of each other while the crowd and the announcers go completely banana.

Its 17 years old so its almost able to buy smokes. Go show it some love.

I wish I could more easily find early 2000 puro. Lots of it looks and also sounds really really good.

Boredom is always counter-revolutionary. Always.
Dragon Lee vs. Barnabero Cavernario from this morning's Fantasticamania was good.

Also, in terms of slightly older puro, I watched the 1976 match between Jumbo and Abdullah the Butcher and it was fun and suprisingly high-energy. (Or maybe I just felt that way because I watched a couple of Inoki headlock mathces before it.)

Just a reminder that this thread is intended to serve both as a recommendation thread for pre-2017 stuff as well as a place to put up your nominations for what you believe to be the Match of the Year for 2017, the Worst Match of the Year for 2017, as well as honorable mention of 2017 matches you think people should go out of their way to watch. Nominations work the same as they always have before - MOTYC needs four votes to be added to the list, WMOTYC needs three votes, HM needs three votes.

Try to add a little explanation/discussion of what you're nominating too (this is not a rule, I'd just prefer it is all!). This is a discussion thread as well so feel free to talk about your picks and other people's picks - and remember you can freely recommend any pre-2017 match you like whether it's great or terrible.

HM - Volador Jr. & Mistico vs. Ultimo Guerrero & Euforia - NJPW Fantasticamania 1/21/17

Nice high-flying showcase designed to wow the Japanese fans (and those of us around the world watching on NJPW World). This one is a whole lot of fun, especially if don't watch lucha regularly.

Going to repost this from the last thread.

MOTYC: KUSHIDA vs. Hiromu Takahashi, NJPW Wrestle Kingdom 11, 1/4
MOTYC: Katsuyori Shibata vs. Hirooki Goto, NJPW Wrestle Kingdom 11, 1/4
MOTYC: Hiroshi Tanahashi vs. Tetsuya Naito, NJPW Wrestle Kingdom 11, 1/4
MOTYC: Kazuchika Okada vs. Kenny Omega, NJPW Wrestle Kingdom 11, 1/4

This is an incredible string of matches, and it topped off one of the greatest wrestling shows of all time. Granted, Okada/Omega outshines the first three, but those matches are all equally amazing and they'll probably be a fuckton better than a lot of matches over the next year.

Oh, if we're putting our 2017 MOTYC noms in here then here we go:

MOTYC: Pete Dunne vs Mark Andrews: WWE UK Championship Tournament Night 2

MOTYC: Pete Dunne vs Tyler Bate: WWE UK CLassic Tournament Night 2

I had never seen any of these wrestlers before I watched the tournament, and the 3 men listed in these matches have made me fans for life. Pete Dunne especially is a fantastic in ring heel.

ill also 3rd these. Dunne could have an incredible year if the wwe don't gently caress up their uk stuff.

watched Jushin Liger vs Brian Pillman from Superbrawl II (1992) after an offhand reference in Death of WCW, and man, that match rules! By far the oldest "modern-feeling" match I've ever seen. very much recommend it.

I liked these two so I'll second and I'd also add an HM: Wolfgang vs. Trent Seven.

There was nothing on San Antonio that I'd recommend going out of your way to see but DIY/AoP was pretty cool and Nakamura/Roode was good if you like slow paced old school stuff and you don't mind NXT's habit of using lengthy medical check spots.
