Meet Dick and Betsy DeVos, billionaires. They own a mansion and a yacht. The Yacht is named Windquest, which is important to remember. That 22,000 sq ft architectural whore of Babylon is their summer lake cottage. It also boasts a 6,000 sq ft guest house, tennis courts and indoor pool. Betsy DeVos's maiden name is Prince, of the Edgar Prince family. They're another fabulously rich West Michigan family with lots of political influence. Betsy's brother, Erik, started a company called Blackwater. You might have heard of them. Did I mention the DeVos's also own a private jet named Alticor? That's also important. They like to name things after their companies. If you don't know much about Amway, this is the direct sales MLM company that started selling laundry soap and vitamins in the 1940's, then branched out into other products. Amway works through networking members. You join the company by paying a membership fee, then you annoy your family and friends to buy overpriced products. The point is to get them to become members too, so then when they annoy their friends and family trying to sell Amway's overpriced products, you get a kickback from what they make. People in the bottom rung of membership make less than two grand a year, on average, so the money isn't in selling Amway's overpriced crap, it's about suckering more people into joining and selling Amway's overpriced crap. Amway's biggest market in the world is China, and just about all of Amway's manufacturing now is in China and other Asian countries. Russia is another major market for the company. When Russia announced their 2014 embargo on all western food products, including the United States in response to sanctions over Crimea, the exception made was dietary supplements. Amway owns the biggest share of supplement sales in Russia, making over a billion dollars a year in that country alone. The DeVos family uses all that sweet bank to fund their many projects and causes. Members of the Dutch Reformed Church (now Christian Reformed) they practice Dominion Theology, which means they want the United States to be a Christian-dominated theocracy. Dick and Betsy DeVos support all the usual fundamentalist causes: Anti LGBT, anti choice, anti public schools, anti union, anti anything and anyone who doesn't think and believe exactly the way they do. Some of the DeVos's better known organizations: Great Lakes Education Project - the man running this organization is Gary Naeyaert. GLEP is Betsy DeVos's Michigan organization to eradicate public schools in the state. They have been very successful, but the DeVos's took their show nationwide so this project mostly emails questionnaires to political candidates and publishes lists of candidates who support "school choice". Michigan Freedom Fund - another project of the DeVos family, this organizaton is broader in scope, promoting "limited government and putting people first. This organization is run by Greg McNeilly. In March 21, 2014, a federal judge struck down the DeVos-funded legislation banning same sex marriage in Michigan. For a narrow window of time, same sex marriage was legal in Michigan, until DeVos-funded AG Bill Schuette found a judge to put an injunction on same sex marriage in the state. During that narrow window, Greg McNeilly married his partner, Douglas Meeks on March 22, 2014. American Federation for Children - This is GLEP gone nationwide. Betsy failed in getting the cap on charters lifted in 2002, failed in getting her husband elected governor in 2006, and Michigan's constitution bans school vouchers, so she decided to go after states that didn't do enough to protect public education. Betsy DeVos knows her billions can buy everything she wants. She donated millions to Trump's presidential campaign, and she wants to eradicate America's public school system. On January 17, 2017, the confirmation hearing for Betsy DeVos to become Trump's Education Secretary is scheduled to begin. Discuss!

The DeVoses are turds and Grand Rapids is a turd city. In fact that whole Grand Rapids/Holland/Grand Haven triangle sucks and I say that as a Michigan native. I'm friends on FB with a couple of my former HS teachers (of arts programs no less!) and I've never seen them this upset about something.

It's going to be incredibly funny when 10-15 years down the line the disparity in education practices between states starts to kick in full and you end up with entire generations of functionally illiterate children in some places because Betsy Devos let them blow up their entire school system. Or incredibly lovely, I guess, if you live in those states and want your neighbors, friends and coworkers to be able to loving read.

Also special education is a giant money sink with amazing social benefits, so expect states that go full-tilt private to return to the 1950s. They'll basically lock disabled students in rooms and just straight up boot kids who aren't learning quickly out of school entirely. The real kicker will be when those kids grow up into disfunctional adults with zero means of support (because you've gutted the entirety of your state's social services) and the crime rate that's been gradually decreasing the past 20 years suddenly starts to climb again.

It's all Trump's plans to destabilize the urban population centers and return everyone to working on farms. Viva the movement.

The Muppets On PCP posted:this is already the case at the system/district/individual school level Not nearly as much as it could be. Remove title 1, fully privatize the system and lower teacher benefits/gut standards and what we have now looks very egalitarian in comparison. Many places would have a great deal of difficulty simply having a school period, much less one that isn't complete poo poo. Like a lot of parts of federal government, the lovely gaps in the DOE are really apparent but the things it succeeds at have largely been so ingrained into American society as to become invisible.

Trump's cabinet is terrible, and anyone of them may end up doing immense damage but I think DeVos is in a special spot to cause untold damage to our society. The foundations of democracy are tied to public education, and without it, it's inevitable that we sink into further dysfunction. The saddest thing about her nomination is, it's not a particularly flashy issue, and it's harder to explain that she's a legitimately terrible person like Sessions is, so I really doubt the media, much less so regular Americans, will pay attention to this.
